FIRST CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH “CENTER CHURCH”

United Church of Christ One Church Street

South Hadley, Massachusetts 01075 (413) 532-2262 email: [email protected] website: centerchurchsouthhadley.org

ALL ARE WELCOME AT CENTER CHURCH ON THE COMMON, AN OPEN AND AFFIRMING UCC CONGREGATION,

WHERE THE SPIRIT OF GOD STIRS US TO EMBRACE OUR DIVERSITY, DEEPEN OUR FAITH IN JESUS, SHARE OUR TEARS AND LAUGHTER,

AND EXTEND GOD'S ABUNDANT LOVE AND JUSTICE INTO THE WORLD.

Make your life count!

The commandment Jesus shared may easily fall off our lips, Love God with all you heart soul and mind and love your neighbor as yourself. However, it is sure tough to practice especially these days. As I was walking on the treadmill listening to CNN I heard one male pundit interrupting and yelling over a female one. It turned my stomach and made me anxious so that I said aloud, “White Privileged Male.” I was embarrassed that I spoke turning to see if anyone heard me. I got off easy; no one was within hearing range. Who am I to speak such names?

Today as I write, a car slammed into a Barcelona crowd killing at least 13. We are still reeling from Charlottesville, another car incident outside Paris, and (you name it). Yet a prophetic voice emerges from the mother of Heather Heyer who was murdered by a white supremacist maniac in Charlottesville. Heather’s mother, Susan Bro, gave a powerful eulogy that called on all of us to take responsibility for confronting the hate rising in our country right now, and ended with this call to action: “So, remember in your heart, if you're not outraged, you're not paying attention. And I want you to pay attention, find what's wrong, don't ignore it, don't look the other way, you make a point to look at it, and say to yourself, what can I do to make a difference? And that's how you're going to make my child's death worthwhile. I'd rather have my child, but by golly, if I got to give her up, we're going to make it count.”

Make your life count. Make Heather’s life count. Remember we are ambassadors for God. Peace, Lori

Summer Music 2017 – Thank You

Summer 2017 will be completed with our Labor Day service. Regular services will be back in full swing, along with the choir, Cheryl Cobb, and Larry Schipull on September 10. For two Sundays in June, all of July’s Sundays as well as Labor Day, had music provided by a group of “summer singers/musicians” and myself. So it is with much gratitude that I thank the following for their “service:” John and Kate Hoffman, Randy Purinton, Karen Sabbs, Jane Ting and David. We had four “newcomers this time: Brenna Anz, Tim Garrett, Gretchen LaBonte and Sharyn Kovalsky. I especially thank Brenna because, in case you did not notice it on that Sunday, she did a lot of moving between choir to sing and congregation for “deaconing” duties. Thanks to these singers who are regular choir members or other members of the congregation. I was especially pleased that Jane was able to play a duet with me (you will certainly hear us again) and that Gretchen was willing to share music on her harp (we hope to hear more from her during the rest of the year too)! A very special thank you again this year as well to Ivy Tillman, former church member, who brought her special musical gifts on July 16 – it is always an honor for me and a joy to welcome her back. As always, it was a treat to hear our resident diva and choir director, Cheryl Cobb, who sang way back in June. Thanks to all of these folks for letting the rest of the choir have some well-deserved time off. But we’ll all be back on September 10! The music program is definitely one of our strengths here at Center Church and is mentioned often in listings of what draws in new members. I can assure you that Cheryl, Larry Schipull and I (and Linda Laderach too), along with the choir, will do all that we can to continue to lead our excellent music program forward, as we all come back for this new 2017-18 church year. I would be remiss if I did not mention how fortunate our congregation is that we have Mount Holyoke right next door and are so lucky to have Larry, Linda and Cheryl who share their considerable musical gifts with us on a continuing basis. Cindy Morrell, Associate in Music (46 years & counting)

The trustees returned to their regular monthly schedule in August. We heard that the end of July numbers continue to be positive for income – should be at 58% and we were at 64.41%. The expense side came in at 59.55 % so a little higher but still not bad at all. Numbers at our September meeting will reflect that one month at Granby (August) where we receive no plate income (just as they did not receive any in July).

As we all return to Center Church this month, you will notice the new first floor lavatory in the Church St. entryway, which blends in very nicely right next to the choir’s “secret” door up to the sanctuary. We owe most grateful thanks to the church members who helped finance this addition, at no cost to our regular budget! And we thank the contractor who made the work happen – Renovations by Bob (Boudreau); - The long Fellowship Hall south windows are completely done and the north ones will be done very soon. After caulking underneath 2nd and 3rd floor windows of the building, the Lancaster Wing should be all set for a while. Other projects have also been completed.

Heading into the fall, we would be remiss if we did not thank Nehemiah Wilson for his lawn mowing services these past couple of years. We will miss him as he heads off to Williams College to begin his college career. Many thanks!! We would also be very remiss if we did not thank Bob Hazen for all the little (and sometimes bigger) things he has been doing around the church in recent years. He will be very hard to replace. As he retires from this volunteer “job,” we do hope that he can find lots of other fun things to fill his time! And that he may consider stopping in to check on things “once in a while”.

Cindy Morrell, secretary

The August 1 meeting was moderated by Bobbie Ayers, member of the Membership team. Rev. Lori Souder reported that the replacement UCC rainbow banner should be in place by the beginning of September. She is also looking forward to the implementation of the “Envisioning” goals in the fall. After some discussion, it was MSV unanimously to take $150 from unrestricted memorial funds to complete the 2017 requests for summer camp individual monetary stipends. The Council also agreed to request, through the Trustees, an increase in its unrestricted memorial fund allotment. Reports from the teams: Trustees are pleased with the speed that the new lavatory in the foyer was completed. This was all done through individual donations! Fire inspection personnel have completed a “to do” list for Center Church to complete. Stewardship is planning an all church gathering “Vision for the Future” after worship on October 1. Outreach supported various organizations with monetary donations. Membership distributed the annual list of hosts for Fellowship Hour. Human Resources will be hosting a “recognition” for our church music staff on September 24. CE has hired Chelsea K for the Sunday school nursery position. She will start September 10. The Peterson Scholarship is in need of more contributions. A special collection is planned for sometime in February 2018. It was MSV to accept Barbara Ayers, Del Borah and Robert Robertson to review our church constitution for any changes and or additions. Lorain Giles and Don Donihue, through Adult CE, are planning some future programs and book discussions regarding racism. Church Safety Officer Al Duffy and the Fire Department will be conducting a fire alarm practice in mid-September and mid-October.

Cathedral in the Night - Outreach Partner

The Outreach Team is sending a donation of $500 to Cathedral in the Night (CITN) in Northampton. CITN is an outdoor Christian community which seeks to create a safe place for all people: the homeless, the housed, the church-less, the churched, the student and the resident to explore, question and live out their spiritual beliefs; to gather for a meal and to empower one another to engage in issues of social justice by working to fight the causes of inequality and homelessness. Worship services are held on Sundays at 5 pm on the front

steps of First Churches in Northampton (outdoors at 129 Church Street). Services conclude with Eucharist which then leads into a meal offered freely to all present. Pastor Stephanie Smith leads the staff of ministers and ministry student interns. Congregations and restaurants prepare, donate and help serve the meals. CITN holds worship services every week; rain, snow, or shine. Center Church has hosted the meal at several past worship services.

We will take an offering in Worship on September 3rd for those affected by Hurricane Harvey in Texas. UCC Disaster Ministries is already gearing up for their long-term recovery work in the region and your contributions for Harvey survivors means providing community support for holistic recovery, repairing house and home for families and children and restoring dignity for the most vulnerable who have lost everything in the wake of this catastrophic event. PLEASE GIVE generously to support Harvey relief and recovery efforts. 100% of donations sent through the UCC go directly to relief efforts!! Professor David Hernandez, of the Latino Studies Department at Mt. Holyoke College, will be joining us for a coffee hour in late September to talk about current trends in US policy regarding immigration, including approaches to detention and deportation. This is part of the Outreach Committee's ongoing effort to provide opportunities for us to get a better understanding of the immigrant experience. Please watch the bulletin for more information.

In the history of Center Church, there have been many notable personages. We have been blessed by them all! In our present “timeline” the name of Lawrence (Larry) Graham is in the forefront through his generous and loving support of us, the members of Center Church. To those of us who had the privilege of personally knowing and interacting with Larry, he left a lasting impression. Born Lawrence Allen Graham 96 years ago in his parent’s home on Burnett Avenue (just down the street from Center Church), September 12, 1921. His father, Floyd Raymond and mother Maude (Fillmore) Graham moved to South Hadley around 1917 when Larry’s brother Donald Fillmore Graham was born. Donald died from complications of an ear infection in 1932. A memorial scholarship fund was set up for him at South Hadley High School and to this day is awarded to a student for “excellence of character.” Larry’s father was born in Lawrence, MA in 1888. In 1902, he began work in cotton mills in New Bedford, MA. He became associated with a variety of industries and eventually settling with tissue paper. In 1934, he organized Graham Manufacturing Company in Holyoke, MA specializing in paper napkins. That building still stands on the right just across the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial Bridge into Holyoke. He was an active member of Center Church and a civic leader and philanthropist. A room is named for him in the Lancaster Education Wing! Larry was educated in our local schools and attended Williston Academy. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1944 with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He joined the U.S. Navy during WWII as a Lieutenant. He served in the Pacific Theater of Operations. He later served as an American oil tanker navigator. He married Muriel (Kent) on November 17, 1945. As an aside, Larry’s mother, wife and daughter Susan all graduated from Mount Holyoke College! Larry and Muriel had four children, Susan, Donald, Nancy and David. All the kids grew up in Center Church. After his father died in 1955, Larry took over running Graham Manufacturing. Through honesty, fairness and hard work, he made the business quite a success! During some lean times with the company, Larry took a cut in his salary and made sure his employees were properly cared for. He knew them all by name! Every Thanksgiving and Christmas he would present them with turkeys so that they would be able to enjoy the holidays! Throughout Larry’s life he gave of his leadership, time and money to numerous charitable organizations. He was awarded the Citizenship Award by the Holyoke St. Patrick’s Parade Committee. He helped start the South Hadley Swim Club, the Hampshire National Bank across from the Common, and helped Holyoke Hospital with a major renovation. Larry was an active member of Center Church holding leadership positions on many of our committees. He was a committed member of the tenor section and soloist for our choir. If you ever heard Larry sing in his “hey day”, (and I was so privileged to sing some duets with him) you realized how blessed we were to hear him! He was chair of the Trustees on several occasions as well as a member of the building committee to construct our education wing. Larry truly left us with a lasting legacy. Here is a fitting Quaker quote that especially embodies Larry the individual. “Do it now…I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good thing, therefore, that I can do or any kindness I can show to any fellow human being let me do it now…for I shall not pass this way again.” For his “good works” he will be long remembered! Larry died on November 1, 2005 at the age of 84. David C. Morrell, Center Church historian

The Graham Legacy

And from Cindy Morrell, trustee – Thanks for a life well lived. [Note: on a personal level, I grew up with the Graham kids, Susan was in my grade all the way through from Center School and on to Mount Holyoke College. We are still good friends. And I also sang for many years in the choir with Larry which was a joy!] Currently I am serving as one of your trustees so I’m very aware of our church’s finances. Throughout my various times as a trustee, I have been very aware of how much his annual gift has meant to this church. In early 2002, the church was the recipient of a letter from Larry and Muriel’s attorney stating that they had set up a “charitable lead annuity trust.” The trust was designed to continue for 18 years with an annual payment share coming to the church, usually near the end of December. This occurred after the Grahams had already moved up to Wolfboro, NH. Muriel still lives there so we include her in our gratitude. Over the years we have been blessed to have this “Graham Fund” on which to draw if we needed help with things outside (or over and above) of our normal annual budget. Here are some things which it has helped to fund: Lancaster Wing third floor windows; choir speakers and part of the sanctuary sound system; a new boiler; carpeting for the chapel and Center Nursery; a number of renovations for the church parsonage before Lori arrived; north sanctuary rose window work; sanctuary truss repairs; bell tower window repair; and most recently - flat roof repair, boiler work, and work on the Fellowship Hall outside windows. If we were to total all those items plus the many other small ones, it would be a very sizeable amount. And before the Grahams left South Hadley, I’m sure that Center Church was also the recipient of his generosity as well. Donald Graham said that “his father never did anything for personal recognition. He always did what he thought was right and if he was in a position to help someone, he did it because it made him feel good. That was his way.” In addition to his philanthropy, of course, anyone who was here during his time at Center Church, knows about his singing prowess as David mentioned. He was always a hit at our regular choir capers, he would sing at the drop of a hat and was known for making our choir director slightly nervous when it came time for his solos – not because of the notes he was singing but because he would occasionally get lost in the piece. And who can forget his portrayal as one of Amahl and the Night Visitors kings and his “this is my box. I never travel without my box” solo. So…thanks to Larry and Muriel Graham for all their generosity to Center Church and for all the memories!

This month, I’m doing something a little different and repeating this information from the June 2013 CAC. If you have a hymnbook at home, check this out! On the previous page, you will see two hymns that you will need to look at as you read this article. Back in 2013, Larry Schipull came out from behind the choir rail and the organ and talked a bit about hymn structure and all the information which you will find around each hymn in our two books. So Thia has kindly scanned one hymn (278) from the New Century Hymnal (NCH) first and one (1) from The Pilgrim Hymnal (PH) second. You will find the same information I am going to talk about in either hymnal, it just might be in a different place. So when you look at a specific hymn, what do you notice first? Do you look and then wonder what it all is? Well, most of the time you see the title, usually the first few words of the first stanza (verse). Next, the text writer and the composer are listed separately, unless of course, the same person both wrote and composed the hymn. The text writer is usually on the top left, and the date when the text was written is listed too as a single date (NCH). The PH lists the birth and death dates of the writer instead. The composer and the tune name (in caps) are listed at the bottom right in the NCH and the top right for the PH. So what else do you see around the hymn? Well, if you look closely you should see a scriptural reference, if there is one, on which the hymn might be based. And you might also see some numbers next to the hymn tune name. Those list the “phrase syllables” in each line. Why would you want to know that? Well, as Larry says, sometimes hymn texts can be interchanged with other hymn tunes. Here are two examples of that. If you take the words to O God, Our Help and the C.M. notation (8.6.8.6) that goes along with that hymn tune (ST. ANNE), those same words could be put to the tune AZMON (O For a Thousand Tongues) or CORONATION (All Hail The Power) or a number of other tunes. All of these combinations of syllable set-ups can be found in the back as well

Tell Me the Stories – September 2017

Page 11: CHURCH AT THE CENTER - …centerchurchsouthhadley.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/September... · 03/09/2013 · Learn and Review Classic Social Dance Steps! ... Fran Collins, Lesley

under “metrical index.” While the PH usually lists all of the metrical numbers for the hymn, the NCH sometimes just lists initials, such as C.M. or C.M.D. However again in the back, it does define what any of the initial pairings mean and gives their metrical #s. Sometimes it might be that a particular hymn tune is an unfamiliar one BUT you could find another tune with the same metrical numbers, with which the congregation is familiar, for the words you really want to use. This is why there are usually one or two emails each week between the Lori and the musical staff before the actual Sunday program gets set. So you might be singing words to a hymn tune which you are not actually looking at (that does not happen very often!)

Can you see that any hymnbook has more than just specific hymns in it? Occasionally I will note in these hymn “stories” that a hymn was originally paired with another hymn tune than the one it is currently placed with. And some hymn tunes have been placed with multiple texts as the example we’ve used here. All of this information is listed by various categories at the back of the hymnal. In alphabetical within each, there is a list of the metrical index (tune name by # of syllables/line), topical index (subject matter), first lines of each hymn, list of tune names, and a list of authors/composers or authors and composers separately. The NCH also has a list of scriptural references categorized by the Bible books as well as the lectionary index.

Have I thoroughly confused you yet? Check out a hymnbook (any one will do) and see for yourself. So next time you are singing hymns in church, take a moment to see all the amazing information which can be found right there on the page. The NCH also gives you a little additional information about the hymn at the bottom, which is synthesized from the NCH Companion. Cindy Morrell, Associate in Music
