Dear Sunrisers,

Our special consecration services are com-

ing on March 8 and 9! Congregations that

approach financial stewardship from a bib-

lical perspective do not view the money

Christians give to their church merely as a

way to pay its bills. Rather, such congrega-

tions see financial contributions as a way to

help people grow spiritually in their relation-

ship with God by supporting their church’s

mission and ministry with a percentage of

their incomes.

Our congregation’s finance committee has

selected the New Consecration Steward-

ship Program as a way to teach the biblical

and spiritual principles of generous giving in

our stewardship education emphasis this

year.

The New Consecration Stewardship Pro-

gram is based on the biblical philosophy of

the need of the giver to give for his or her

own spiritual development, rather than on

the need of the church to receive. Instead

of treating people like members of a social

club who should pay dues, we will treat

people like followers of Jesus Christ who

want to give unselfishly as an act of disci-

pleship. The New Consecration Stewardship

Program encourages people toward pro-

portionate and systematic giving in re-

sponse to the question, “What percentage

of my income is God calling me to give?”

During worship each of our worship services

on Consecration Weekend, we are asking

our attendees and members to make their

financial commitments to our church’s mis-

sionary, benevolent, and educational min-

istries in this community and around the

Daybreak A new day is dawning...

Continued: To that end, during worship on Saturday March 8 and Sun-

day March 9 you will be given an Estimate of Giving Card on which you

may make a commitment to God to give an amount that you feel God

is calling you to give. Every attendee and member who completes an

Estimate of Giving Card does so voluntarily by attending worship on

Consecration Weekend. We urge people to attend who feel strongly opposed to completing a card. The proce-

dure is done in such a way that no one feels personal embarrassment if he or she chooses not to fill out a card.

We will do no home solicitation to ask people to complete cards. During worship our guest leader will conduct a

brief period of instruction and inspiration, climaxed by members making their commitments as a confidential act of

worship.

I am writing to you now to encourage participation in Consecration Weekend Worship. Since we will make no fol-

low-up visits to ask people to complete their cards, we will make every effort to inform, inspire, and commit every-

one to attend worship on Consecration Weekend.

I truly believe you will be blessed through your commitment to God through Sunrise Church. I also believe worship

on Consecration Weekend will be especially moving. I am asking you to make plans now to be present in the wor-

ship service you normally attend on March 8 or 9. I am excited about what God is going to do in our lives and I

look forward to seeing you in worship, especially on March 8 and/or 9!

Lenten Opportunities

The United Methodist Book of Worship tells us, “Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which begins

on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. The season is a preparation for celebrating Easter. Historically, Lent

began as a period of fasting and preparation for baptism by converts and then became a time for penance by all

Christians. The first Sunday describes Jesus’ temptation by Satan; and the Sixth Sunday (Passion/ Palm Sunday),

Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem and his subsequent passion and death. Because Sundays are always little

Easters, the penitential spirit of Lent should be tempered with joyful expectation of the Resurrection.”

Today many Christians view lent as a time for prayer, repentance, self-examination and focusing on God. In study-

ing the season of Lent I have discovered that the United Methodist Church views Lent as a very personal time for

individuals . Specific guidelines on how to observe Lent are not set, but we are not to neglect the season either.

During Lent many Christians will decide to fast from a particular food or activity. In her book The Circle of Seasons ,

Kimberlee Conway Ireton describes fasting as “intentionally creating a space for God.” She believes when we

give up something like a food or activity we create a space that God can fill. I am struck by this positive connota-

tion, rather than the negative connotation of fasting. It is my prayerful intention to use this season of Lent to cre-

ate more space for God to fill in my life. I invite you to join me.

Lenten Bible Study: We live in a busy noisy world. Lent is a season when we can slow down and take time to recon-

nect with God. Listen, Praying in a Noisy World by Rueben P. Job, is a six week study “with a focus on listening pray-

er and prayer as a two-way conversation, the experience will assist individuals and groups in building and deepen-

ing a personal prayer practice and spiritual discernment.” The study will be offered starting Thursday, March 6.

Lenten Community Prayer Walks: will be offered Saturday mornings at 9AM during Lent (excluding March 22nd).

We will meet at various parks , pray briefly and then focus on a scripture while silently walking and connecting with

God. Enjoy God’s creation in nature while keeping healthy by walking a mile or two. Walks will begin March 8th.

Thinking about Christmas… In MARCH???

Well, yes! The idea has come up that we might enact a LIVE NATIVITY this coming December

in our church parking lot. Since this would be a first-time endeavor for us,

I need a “dream Team” to help me research, brainstorm, evaluate, and pray this through. It sounds like a great idea!

And I have LOTS of questions! I want to draw from different people in the congregation to gather a variety of perspectives and experience, so that IF we do a live nativity, it is clearly spirit-led and presented with

excellence. If you feel drawn to give some input on this idea, please let me know!

I plan to gather my “Dream Team” in early spring and begin talking this through within the next few weeks. Thank you!

Stations of the Cross: Good Friday, April 18

During Holy Week, Good Friday is the day that we pray,

meditate, and consider Jesus’ death on the cross for our

sins. The youth are organizing a special worship experience

for this evening. Your family, friends, and neighbors are invit-

ed to travel on a multisensory journey to the cross. The entire

church will be transformed into an avenue for prayer. There

will be 13 stations, all of which reenact the last few moments of

Jesus’ life on earth. You will rotate through the stations in

groups of 6 people. You can start any time between 6 and 8pm.

The whole experience will take about an hour.

Spring Youth Retreat: March 21-23

The youth group will be traveling to Camp Rockfish on

March 21-23 for our Spring Youth Retreat. Joining us will be

Mt. Zion UMC youth group and a special guest speaker. We

will depart on Friday afternoon at 6pm and return on Sun-

day afternoon by 5pm. There will be opportunities for ca-

noes, archery, rock climbing, zip line, hiking, and other ac-

tivities. We have plenty of room for a few more youth to

join us!

ASP Auction: Sunday, April 13, 5:30pm

Mark your calendars for the annual ASP spaghetti dinner

and auction on April 13 starting at 5:30pm. We will host

a silent auction and live auction portion with proceeds

going to support the Appalachia Service Project trip to

Western North Carolina from July 13-19. For more in-

Lenten Food Drive

Children’s Sunday School classes will be participating with the preschool in a Lenten food drive for Holly Springs Food Cup-

board. Lent is a special time when you can share the concepts of prayer and giving with your children. Even very young chil-

dren can understand and will enjoy participating in the process.

We are asking for donations of specific items for each week:

March 2: Dried Beans (all kinds – Lentils, black, kidney, navy, etc.)

March 9: Jelly (all kinds – jelly, jam, and fruit spread)

March 16: Cereal (dry cereal, oatmeal, grits)

March 23: Peanut Butter

March 30: Sauces (pasta sauce, canned tomatoes, etc) and Canned Meat

Staying at Hayes Barton UMC in Raleigh, partnering with at

Working at many mission locations all over the greater Raleigh

VBS 2014 Save the Date! This year we will hold Vacation Bible School from June 16-20 in the evening for ages 4 through 5th grade. This year we will be exploring Weird Animals: Where Jesus’ Love is One-of-a-Kind! God filled the world with a lot of crazy creatures...including you! When kids feel weird, different, or even lost in a crowd—nothing compares to the extraordinary love of Jesus. This is one of our biggest events of the year at Sunrise Church, with over 100 kids in attendance. To make it a success, we need over 60 dedicated volunteers! Announcing the Wake UP AND READ BOOK DRIVE!

The Kraft Family YMCA is collecting new and gently used children’s books for ages birth-12 from March 2nd- March 29th. Sadly, many Wake County children have no books in their homes. The goal is to ensure that more children from low-income families have the tools and re-sources they need to become lifelong readers and learners. If you do not have books to donate you can purchase books to support the drive through Wake Up and read Amazon Wish List (amzn.com/w/1CKI25DIX2JBX) . Are you planning on taking down any trees on your property this spring or summer? Per-haps you know of a neighbor who is? If so, con-sider donating the wood for the firewood minis-try at Sunrise. We'll take any tree, except pine and gum, and any branch or limb 4 inches in diameter and up. Please speak with anyone in the Men's ministry in advance of the work and we can come pick it up and haul it away. If the tree service you are using is able to cut up the logs into 16 or 17 inch lengths that would be a plus! Otherwise a few Sunrise men could make arrangements to come cut up the tree first and either haul it away then, or sometime shortly thereafter.

Warmth for Wake is a seasonal energy assistance outreach program which kicks off each year in October to provide fuel to low income residents of Wake County. Sunrise volunteers cut, sort, pack and de-liver wood to low income participants through the program, several of whom reside in Holly Springs and surrounding communities. Sunrise Sportsmen's Dinner If you like the great outdoors come to Congleton Farm (1719 Avent Ferry Rd., Holly Springs) for an afternoon of fun and wild game sampling. We will have falconry and dog retrieving demonstrations along with activities for both kids and adults. Our featured speaker is Brian Dehart from Man-teo, NC who is the founder of Anchored Up Ministries and a sometime guest on the PBS television show Carolina Out-door Journal. Menu items include venison, elk, wild pig, duck, flounder and hot dogs for the kids (and less adven-turous). March 22nd, 3pm - 7pm. A limited number of tick-ets are available for $10 per adult beginning March 2nd. Kids 16 and under are free with each adult ticket.

8 year old girl named Madeline (Maddie) McPherson diagnosed with recurrent cancer

(Rhabdomysarcoma) in the nasal passage that has invaded her brain.

The family lives in Wilmington, NC, where they moved about a year ago from St. Louis b/c dad got a new

job.

Family has 5 children ages 5th grade through 2 years old. Maddie is next to oldest.

After moving to Wilmington Maddie has been followed for ongoing scans and follow up at UNC Children's

Hospital (no children's hospital in Wilmington)

I think they discovered the relapse of Maddie's cancer back in November 2013, a few months ago.

Maddie has been on chemo for several months.

Recently had to have 15 hour (2 day) surgery to remove twisted/tangled tumor at UNC involving nasal

cavity and brain. Very high risk surgery...

About 24 hours or so after surgery Maddie suffered a stroke and is currently in PICU at UNC.

Surgeons have had to open skull and expose brain in order to relieve pressure. No word on when skull will

be put back in place.

Maddie has already lost vision in one eye due to initial treatment for cancer, prior to relapse.

Mom is with Maddie at UNC and dad is at home in Wilmington working and taking care of other 4 children.

Maddie has to recover from this very complicated surgery and her recent stroke and then receive more

chemotherapy and radiation. Doctors don't know the extent of the brain damage she has sustained from the

stroke. The mom is away from the rest of the family as life goes on even in the midst of trauma.

Thought that this situation presented itself with a way for us to reach out to this family and offer some much

needed comfort, love, and hope in the midst of tragedy, fear, and intense anxiety. A box will be labeled in

the Narthex with the title "Cards for Maddie." If you feel the need to get a card with an encouraging message

to this mom, whose name is Melissa and/or Maddie please do so by next Sunday, March 9th. Lisa Pearson and

I will hand delivery the cards. If you feel so led and are able I am sure this family would appreciate gift cards

for Starbucks or Chick-fil-a, as these two restaurants are located inside the hospital. New stuffed animals or

other pick me ups would also be appreciated if you want to.

You know, I almost didn't mention this situation, but then I remembered Tom's sermon and illustration about the

guy who felt a nudging from God to stop by the house of someone he didn't know and offer a gallon of milk in

the middle of the night. This situation is local for us and I personally can relate to the need this family has and

can't shake the nudge to offer some measure of comfort. Sometimes the smallest things have the biggest im-

pact.

One Great Hour of Sharing, a United

Methodist Special Sunday, is March 30. This special

Sunday offering enables the United Methodist Commit-

tee on Relief(UMCOR) to respond

to disasters around the world. UMCOR is a not-for-

profit global humanitarian aid organization of the Unit-

ed Methodist Church. Their mission is to alleviate hu-

man suffering by providing

food, clothing, shelter and medical help when a catas-

trophe strikes. They also stay to assist survivors in re-

building their lives. Your gift to UMCOR is essential

because, unlike other

mission programs, they receive no World Service funds

or other apportionment money. Let’s make a difference

in the lives of hurting people!

Christian Book Drive – Beginning on March 5, 2014, we will be collecting used or new Christian books for Christian Library Interna-tional.

A collection box will be located in the narthex until April 13 (Palm Sunday)

Christian Library International, a Raleigh, NC based ministry, distributes Christian books, Bibles and mate-rials free of

charge, to over 1,100 federal prisons, state prisons and county jails. Your Christian books and Bibles can make an

eternal difference in an inmate’s life.
