Photographic Collection

This collection mostly consisted of Johnson of Hendon material a local firm, and material was put aside from this collection for the local history collection and stored at North Finchley. However as much of the collection consists of chemicals (Johnsons factory at Hendon was mostly involved in the production of photographic chemicals), and under advice from the National Media Museum in Bradford, it was not considered safe for storage. The Collection

Archaeological Material

Advice about the below was sought from Hendon and District Archaeological Society. Much of it was considered of little importance archeologically and not of local origin with some items of questionable authenticity. Some HADAS material had been stored at Church Farmhouse by the late Ted Sammes, one time Chairperson of HADAS (See HADAS above).

i Material belonging to Barnet Museum was also held at Mill Hill depot and the listing and organisation were the responsibility of Barnet Museum. Over the thirty years that this material was held in Church Farmhouse Museum’s stores the intimate knowledge of the collection was forgotten by Barnet Museum. The current staff at Barnet Museum had no knowledge what was their property apart from a simple list. Although this material was not the Borough’s responsibility it was identified by Gerrard Roots, former curator, by knowledge of what did belong to Church Farmhouse and the list shortly before closure. After closure two more items (a portrait of an unidentified man and a plaster cast of an armorial badge) were identified from a letter. What could be identified was removed or discarded by Barnet Museum in May 2012.

ii These cabinets were no longer suitable for use in a local authority setting as they do not meet current safety and display standards. They were at the time of closure being replaced by new cabinets (see Hendon Library below).

iii These cabinets are in use displaying the local history material and toys, and are rented out to local artists and commercial companies to supplement the income for the running of Hendon Library. The toys are provided as loans from the Holley Cornelius Collection (see below).

iv These items were lent to the collection by Andrew Dunlop, the last of the Church Farmhouse Dunlops. David Watts is the son in law of Pauline Dunlop, widow of the same and closest traceable relative.

v Many of these pieces came from HADAS digs conducted over the years in Barnet. They have a close relationship with The London Archaeological Archive and Research Centre (LAARC). The last item piece was “discovered” by a Dr Hicks at the end of the 19 th century in the grounds of Grove House, now Middlesex University (suggesting that his home was on the site of Roman Villa). However no further evidence of this kind of occupation has ever been found in this part of Hendon, and it is really more of a curio than evidence of a Roman Villa. This meant that the item was not suitable for retention in London Borough of Barnet’s residual local history collection.

vi The Holley Cornelius Collection has been lending material to the London Borough of Barnet for display at Church Farmhouse Museum since the early 1990s. They were happy to receive the collection on an understanding that we would borrow occasional material back for display at Hendon.

vii These items were given to the collection by Andrew Dunlop, around 1955. David Watts is the son in law of Pauline Dunlop, widow of the same.

viiiLauderdale House is the only other truly “local museum” that runs school sessions on the Victorians in the area and will be running sessions for the schools in the NW11 and N2 areas of the London Borough of Barnet now that Church Farmhouse has been closed.

ix This was originally offered to Barnet Local Studies and Archives along with other materials but was considered too large to be housed at Hendon.
