Third Sunday of Lent March 15, 2020 Page 3

3rd Sunday of Lent – On this the Third Sunday of Lent, God is drawing us to His Son Jesus, the “wellspring of living water.” Today the Universal Church is celebrating the first scrutiny with those in the RCIA, who are preparing for Baptism at Easter. A scrutiny is meant to uncover and heal all that is sinful in their hearts, and bring out and strengthen all that is good. The scrutiny is also for us. We, like the Samari-tan woman at the well, are in need of healing and reconcilia-tion. Samaritans were despised by the Jews of Jesus’ day. But Jesus did not always go along with popular thought. And so, He reaches out to her. And He reaches out to us. Will we al-low Him to touch us? The real scrutinizer today is the living word of God. Let us open our minds and hearts that have been parched and some-times left lifeless through sin, and let us be open to an out-pouring of Christ, Who is the living water. Let today’s Words from Sacred Scripture bring life to us. Let today’s Words bring wellsprings of living water to our, many times, hard-ened hearts. At Mass we begin by examining our consciences during the Penitential Rite. Hopefully, we are humble enough to be honest at this point of the Mass to admit not only our good points / our virtues, but also to admit our shortcomings / our vices / our sins. At this point of our lives we cannot be fooled by Satan. Nor can we hope to fool Jesus. Just as He knew the background of the Samaritan woman, Christ knows us and how we have lived. The Season of Lent, then, is a journey meant to draw us closer to our Creator. To draw closer to Him requires that we let go of all that is not of Him, as did the Samaritan woman at the well. Today’s readings direct us to reach out to our family, to assist our friends, to love and to work with all peoples, not simply because we will be amply compensated, but because it is the nature of our God to love with no strings attached. Hence, to accept God is to accept God’s worldview. Our family, our friends, and our business associates are worthy of gratuitous love because the essence

of our God is to look to the welfare of others. I came across the following and thought I’d share it with all of us as we continue our Lenten Journey. It’s entitled LENT: “A Time for Traditions” and it’s from the recent Greensburg Diocesan Council of the National Council of Catholic Wom-en newsletter. Spring is the season when seeds start to sprout, beginning their pilgrimage through the cold dark earth into the light. The word “lent” comes from the Anglo-Saxon word for springtime. In springtime, sunlight, water and rich soil help plants grow. Our Lenten growth is nurtured by the three disciplines of Lent, (fasting, almsgiving and prayer). Disci-pline is often associated with punishment, but is comes from the same word as disciple, a word that means learner or pupil. Be a learner this Lent and let God’s grace help us all to grow as disciples.
