PARISH NEWS

Welcome to our Neighborhood

Ministry

If you know someone new to your neighbor-hood, please contact the rectory to obtain a “Welcome to the Neighborhood” packet which includes a welcome letter from Fr. Jerome, a bul-letin and a bottle of holy water. In the spirit of hospitality, your new neighbor does not have to be Catholic, we just want to welcome them to the neighborhood. We ask that all of you, our parishioners, be the “welcomers”, but if you do not feel comfortable visiting a new neighbor, let us know and we will take care of it, care of our welcoming committee.

Are you interested in becoming Catholic or know someone who would like to learn more about the Catholic faith? If so, our Rite of Chris-tian Initiation process is for those who want to be baptized, or receive the sacrament of First Holy Communion and Confirmation. For fur-ther information, contact Deacon Steve Tobon at 718-987-2670.

Collection for the Church in Latin America and Catholic Home Missions

This weekend we will take up the Collection for the Church in Latin America and Catholic Home Missions. Please prayerfully consider support-ing these combined collections which assist pro-grams that strengthen the faith in Latin America and the Caribbean as well as the dioceses here in our own country. Many parishes struggle to make ends meet to serve all of the needs of their parishioners. Your gifts help share the faith by providing lay leadership training, catechesis, priestly and religious formation, as well as other programs. Envelopes are in your weekly enve-lope packet.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS MAKE A DIFFERENCE… During the last week of August, I was at the “Dunkin Donuts” on Victory Boulevard. Since it was a hot day, I purchased some Iced Coffee-Carmel flavored by the way and really delicious! As I was paying for the coffee at the register, there

was a mother there with her two young children-a boy and a girl, who were in constant motion. The mom was warning the boy to “stop getting an attitude with me!” She then turned to me and said, “September 7th can’t come fast enough for me!” I replied, “Isn’t that the starting day of school?” she said, “You guessed it!” Then I ventured to say, “But the summer is such a wonderful season, it’s kind of sad to see it go!” Mom replied, “Not for me it isn’t!” Well, for some parents vacation might begin when the children go back school-others not! Actually September 7th, was the day school started here at Saint Charles. During the summer, despite the Bible and Villamarin Camps, it is exceptionally quiet during the week without all those children coming in at 8AM and then filing out at 2:30 down Penn Avenue! I have to admit, I very much enjoy having a school in the parish; having the young people adds so much vitality and life to the Church. Thank God we have a won-derful school at Saint Charles and that is due to the leadership of Mr. J.C. Kiernan and his dedicated staff of teachers and assistants. I have always thought that a Catholic School makes a difference. There are several reasons for making that statement, but the foremost is that the values and teachings of Jesus Christ and His Gospel are instilled here. For example, the day begins with a prayer and ends with one. Religion is taught in all the grades. There is a saint and a Christian value for every month of the school year. Mass is celebrated for the kids almost every month and the priests are on hand to hear their confessions in all the liturgical seasons. So there is a great reli-gious atmosphere at Saint Charles. Secondly, there is a discipline and order in a Catholic school and that’s important. When we hear sto-ries about some schools in the metropolitan area, there are so many problems related to disciplinary issues and rowdiness. I remember one Junior High on the North Shore that had the police there at the end of the day just to make sure the students stayed in line! We don’t usually worry about that in a Catholic school. The order and structure here insures that the children will have a positive atmosphere so they can really learn and also have an enjoyable experience. Finally, but not least of course, our Catholic schools provide an excellent academic education. Recently, I was speaking with Dr. Timothy McNiff who is the Superintendent of all the schools here in the Archdiocese of New York. Dr. McNiff told me that on all the state tests, our Catholic school students far surpassed other children in their scores and that was especially evident right here on Staten Island. So that is certainly good news. When you ‘weigh it all up,” a Catholic School really does make a difference for our kids-both now and for the future! Sincerely in Christ, Father Jerome
