from the pastor…

The 3rd Sunday of Easter – Paper or Plastic? We live in a wor ld of so many choices. This is evident in the world of fast food restaurants chains. It’s the same with the many choices we have with convenience stores. Almost twenty years ago a young man was ordained a priest in Charlotte. He spent one year serving in a parish and then left the priest-hood. He took a job in a convenience store. Imagine, he use to say to parishioners “The Word of the Lord”, “The Body of Christ”, “The Blood of Christ”, then as a cashier, he exchanged those words, for “paper or plastic?” which he would say to his customers as he bagged their pur-chases. What a contrast! In today’s first reading from the Acts of the Apostles we see the commit-ment the Apostles made to follow the Lord Jesus. That was their choice and it cost them. The powers that be, dragged them before the Sanhedrin and said we prohibit you from speaking about Jesus, and yet…Their response was “we’ve got to obey God before man..” The closing line of this reading says “They left rejoicing that they had been found worthy to suffer dishonor for the sake of the name.” What is our commitment to Jesus? In our world of choices, what will we choose? Let’s follow the example of the Apostles and follow the Lord. We too must obey God and his commandments and teach our children to do the same. When we allow our children to skip the Lord’s Day Mass for a job at a fast food restaurant or to play soccer, etc. we are teaching them to exchange the Word of the Lord, the Body and Blood of Christ for – “Paper or plastic?” Next weekend we will celebrate the 4th Sunday of Easter . The read-ings at Mass will be taken from Acts 13:14, 43-52, Revelation 7:9, 14-17, John 10:27-30. Come prepared. The Flowers this weekend are donated in honor of Lindsay Stoffer and Matthew Smith who were married here at St. Philip’s on Saturday, April 9th. Matthew is a life-long parishioner of our parish and is the son of Peter & Lucy Smith. Lindsay is the daughter of Richard & Allison Stoffer. May God grant Mr. & Mrs. Matthew many happy and healthy years together. The Easter Egg Hunt – was held way back on Palm Sunday. Even though the weather wasn’t that great, the Easter Egg hunt was great. We thank Mary Brown, Norma Echevarria, The Family Life Committee and all who worked the event, donated candy, cooked hot dogs, cleaned up, etc. to make this a fun-filled experience for our children and God’s chil-dren. The Parish Council will meet this Monday evening at 7 p.m. in the K of C Room. St. Philip’s Graduates – St. Philip’s Family Life Committee and Parish would like to recognize this year’s Post graduate degrees, College, High School and Middle School graduates. We’d like to recognize their achievements at the weekend Masses on May 21st & 22nd. If you know someone from our parish who is graduating this spring please call Ann Simons a.s.a.p. at 704-871-1074 and leave the graduate’s name, phone number, graduate level and school name. This way we’ll be able to add them to our list and honor them as well. The 50 Plus Club plans to meet in our Social Hall at noon on Thurs-day, April 14th. The speaker will be our very own Steve Reber. Steve and his wife Judy are parishioners of our parish. Steve will speak about his passed experience as a Bishop in the Anglican Church. We ask those who plan to attend to bring a soup or salad to share. Please call Marilyn Armlin at 704-873-5123 with what you plan to bring. All are welcome. Diocesan Support Appeal. Our assessment/goal this year is $47,107. Congratulations we have met our goal in donations and pledges. We will get you the numbers soon. Do it for the Lord. You may make pledges or gifts using the envelopes you received in the mail or those on the tables at the entrance/exit of the church. You can also make pledges online at www.charlottediocese.org/dsa. Please be sure to indicate the name of our parish in the comments section of the online form. Thanks so much for your sacrificial generosity
