As we begin the month of October, we also begin the month of the macabre. In our society people have become somewhat obsessed with death. Halloween is now the second largest money making holiday for retailers behind Christmas. Halloween, known in some parts of the world as Witch’s Night, is Satanic in its origin. Going door to door asking for candy is certainly not evil or even satanic, but the ques on we should be asking as Catholics is whether or not we should par cipate in something, even if it is trying to “take back the night,” that is actually a satanic feast day.

As Catholics, of course, we celebrate All Saints Day (Halloween means All Saints Eve); the satanists celebrate their feasts on the eve of the Catholic feasts. As we celebrate All Saints Day, we are celebra ng those who have entered into the fullness of life in Heaven. Even the next day, All Souls Day, is s ll a celebra on of life because these are souls who are in the State of Grace and will go to Heaven; they are holy souls. Halloween, on the other hand, is a celebra on of death. Isn’t it interes ng that the highest grossing retail holidays are diametrically opposed: Christmas is about life; Halloween is about death. Many Catholic families have moved toward having All Saints Day par es for their children on Halloween evening rather than having their kids taking part in any kind of Halloween fes vi es. Along with the macabre theme that seems to override this month, there is also a tendency among many in our society to dabble in things of the occult. Ouija boards, Tarot cards, Palm or tea leaf reading, horoscopes, psychics, séances, magic eight ball, Charlie, Charlie, Light as a feather, s ff as a board, Bloody Mary, and other such “games” have been popular among the young, especially girls. Catholics should have no part in any of these ac vi es. Some of these things are seeking knowledge, answers, direc on, or informa on. While the seeking of these is perfectly good and even to be encouraged, it must be sought only by proper means. God has clearly forbidden any kind of witchcra , sorcery, and mediums because they are looking to a source other than God. One might object that we look to others for learning and direc on. This is true and proper, provided the person you are asking is trustworthy. The best people to ask are those who have wisdom, learning, and experience. From a Chris an perspec ve, we also want to make sure the person is spiritual and has the proper moral and ethical founda on. On the human level, we would not normally look to our enemies for advice. When you know someone is not interested in your good, in fact, when you know the person desires your harm, you would not want to open yourself to that person and make yourself vulnerable. I think we would all agree that to do such a thing would be the epitome of foolishness. At the same me, we would not go to someone we know to be a thief and a scoundrel to seek financial advice; we would not go to a quack to ask something medical. Why, then, do we go to someone who is the enemy of our soul, who is a liar from the beginning, who is mo vated only by self-interest and has no interest in our good? Some of the things I have men oned are more clearly connected with the devil, but all of them ul mately get their power from the vile creature. Some will object that their “readings” are o en correct. Remember, the best lie is nine parts truth to one part falsehood. The devil is not stupid. He knows that we will begin to trust if what is told to us comes to pass. Then he gets us hooked, takes huge amounts of money, and begins taking control of our lives. The “games” are supposed to be fun; some of them are supposed to be scary, which is somehow supposed to be fun.

Demetrius was the eleventh bishop of Alexandria, Egypt. At the me he took on this role—in the la er part of the Second Century—Alexandria was the second largest city in the Roman Empire. The Church there had been founded by Saint Mark, the author of the Second Gospel. Demetrius was originally a farmer, married and didn’t learn to read un l he was an adult. As bishop of an especially important Church, he was given the tle “Patriarch,” from the Greek word pateras, “father.” He was appointed Patriarch against his will, but he turned out to be very ac ve in developing Chris anity in Egypt. For example, he met pastoral needs by ordaining large numbers of priests and sending them into the more remote parts of the country. He did this in spite of the persecu ons of Chris ans being waged by agents of the ruling Romans. For a while Demetrius was friend of the priest Origen, one of the leading theologians of the day, and appointed him to head the city’s famous cateche cal school. The two eventually had a falling out for various reasons, including ma ers involving doctrine, and Demetrius felt obliged to remove Origen from his teaching post. Demetrius set up three addi onal dioceses in Egypt. He also sent Saint Pantaenus as a missionary to preach the Gospel in Ethiopia and Yemen. The Chris ans of Alexandria respected him greatly. Some may also have been nervous around him; he had the gi s of reading people’s minds and knowing their secret sins. Demetrius was born into eternal life in 231 at the age of 105. Saint Demetrius of Alexandria, pray for us! The next regular monthly Rosary, Mass, and mee ng of the Holy Name Society will be this Saturday, October 13th. The Rosary will begin at 7:30 am in the Church followed by Mass at 8:00 am. We sit in the first three rows on the le side of the north wing. We will have a mee ng in the Choir Room immediately a er the Mass. Refreshments will be served at the mee ng. One does not need to be a Society member to a end. All are welcome.

If you have a Ouija board, tarot cards, or any of the other things men oned above in your home, please dispose of them. If you are going to a psychic, palm reader, card reader or any other source, please stop immediately. All of these things are mortal sins, so please get to confession as soon as possible. God does not always give us knowledge or answers, but that is usually because it is not best for us to have such informa on. Some mes He is simply asking us to trust Him because he not only has everything in control, but He also wants only the best for us. Keep in mind, the devil is completely selfish, so his mo ve in “helping” you is for what he can gain (ul mately your soul). God gets nothing from us, so everything He does is selfless or purely out of love. Stay away from the quack, the thief, the scoundrel, the enemy of your soul. Turn, instead, to the One Who loves you, Who cannot lie, Who wants only your good. Trust Him and throw the rest in the trash where it belongs.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE Language is the means we all use to convey our feelings and our thoughts to one another. However, as St. Paul stated in his Epistle to the Corinthians, “…there are many different languages in the world… but if I do not know the meaning of a language, I shall be a foreigner to one who speaks it…” There is no need to be a foreigner.

If you are interested in learning to speak English as a second language or simply want to improve your ability to speak English, please call the Parish Office to leave your name and phone number. The purpose of your call will help us determine the number of people who may want to par cipate. Also, please indicate if evenings would be acceptable to hold one to two classes per week for a period of me to be arranged given the number of par cipants.

Eucharis c Adora on contact Be y Kreuter at 763-537-1399

Blessed are you who fear the Lord, who walk in his ways! For you shall eat the fruit of your handiwork, blessed shall you be, and favored. ~ Psalm 128

We walk in our Lord’s ways by praying to our Heavenly Father. Remember how Jesus would go away to a quiet place to pray. The Eucharis c Adora on Chapel is available 24/7 for you, for this purpose. More adorers are needed. More subs tutes are needed. YOU are needed.

We are grateful for the many visitors to the Eucharis c Adora on Chapel. Please consider making a commitment to a specific hour each week, or consider becoming a subs tute. With the winter months arriving soon, addi onal subs tutes are needed because of naviga onal difficul es for many adorers, for those who go south for the winter, and to step in when a commi ed adorer is unable to fulfill their hour due to illness.

To have Perpetual Adora on there must be a least one Adorer con nuously present every hour of the day and night—24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It is essen al that each person sign in and out in the book on the counter by the entrance door of the Chapel. It is the only record that proves that every hour is covered. If each en re hour is not covered, then St. Raphael Parish will lose the gi of Perpetual Adora on. This means that the Chapel would not be open and available 24 hours every day.

Hours in need of immediate adorers are: Saturdays: 11:00 pm to midnight O Lord bless us, and draw us close to you.

PLEASE PRAY FOR:

David McMillen Joan Bridell-Thompson Lisa Harm Jeff Woodruff Don Knopick Tom Dancisak Pat Dancisak Norb Meier Denise Brown Andrew Eisenzimmer Anthony Smith Virginia Hartley Paul/Roxana Bruins J.P. Ehlenz Audrey Kauffmann Mary Lou Wensman
