Backpacks for St. Mary Families

This year we are packing 25 additional backpacks designated for families in need within our parish. In the past we have given all of the backpacks to the three area schools: Asa Messer Elemen-tary School, West Broadway Middle School, and the Paul Cuffee Middle School.

If you have children who need school supplies and a backpack, please call Linda Grueb, our parish secretary, with ages and grade level of your children to be eligible to receive them. We will distribute backpacks on a first come, first serve basis. They will be ready for pickup on August 31 between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm at the rectory office.

Ministry of Care: Funeral Ministry Training

We have a ministry at St. Mary's Church whose purpose is to assist the deceased’s family with preparations for their loved one’s funeral, and to serve the celebrant and those present at the funeral with God’s grace and the dignity of our Church commu-nity. Funeral ministers serve in varied ways that include the fol-lowing:

Hosting a family interview by meeting with them in person to select readings and music for the funeral, and to listen to sto-ries about their loved one.

Preparing the altar, sacristy and church for a funeral by put-ting out the items necessary for this solemn rite. Acting as greeters at the church entrances for funeral directors, family members, and other mourners.

Attending the funeral Mass as a support to the bereaved.

Serving as Liturgical Ministers during the funeral in such roles as cross bearer, lectors, altar servers, and Eucharistic ministers.

If you are available during the day and have an interest in

this ministry, kindly plan to attend a one hour session for all fu-

neral ministers in the sacristy on Sunday, August 30, immediate-

ly following the 10:00 AM Mass.

Book Group

Book Group meetings will resume

on the last Sunday in September after the

10:00 AM Mass.

The book choices for September are

The Glass Castle and Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls.

All are welcome to join us.

Host Families Needed

La Salle Academy has partnered with gphomestay’s resi-dential program! Together, we are offering an incredible oppor-tunity to families in Providence and the surrounding areas. If you are interested in making a positive impact on the life of an inter-national student and live within 30 minutes of the school, you may want to consider becoming a host family. You may learn more at our website: www.gphomestay.com Host families will receive a monthly stipend of $1,150 and have access to ongoing support from local Residential Coordina-tors who can help with coordinating meeting your student upon arrival, keeping you connected with the school community, and mediating issues if they arise. Students come with their own insurance and spending money and stay for the academic year. There are also short-term hosting opportunities available. We also offer a $300 referral bonus for each approved host family that lists you as the source of referral on their application. Contact Dave for more information at [email protected] or our host coordinator at 781.996.0429 If you are ready to take the next step and fill out an appli-cation please visit: http://www.gphomestay.com/Application.php

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Classes Begin September 13!

PRE-KINDERGARTEN: (4 year olds) Preschoolers talk and play after listening to a popular children’s book. The theme of each story reflects a different Christian val-ue each week. Children learn by having fun and using their im-aginations. This program, called “Pray Me a Story,” lasts about thirty (30) minutes.

KINDERGARTEN PROGRAM The kindergarten program focuses on basic concepts, such as God’s love for us, the Church as community, loving and sharing as Jesus would, stories that Jesus told us, and praying and sing-ing with God. Children engage in active, hands-on learning, building on the faith formation their families have begun to in-spire in them.

RECONCILIATION AND FIRST COMMUNION: (Grades 1 & 2) - First Communion is a two-year program that begins in grade 1 and culminates in receiving the sacraments in May of the second year (grade 2).

DEVELOPING A STRONG FAITH: (Grades 3 through 6) Children acquire a sense of community within St. Mary Parish. They gain a stronger, deeper understanding of their faith, so important to a Catholic young person’s sense of spirituality.

CONFIRMATION: (Grades 7 and up) Our confirmation program will have a new and engaging ap-proach. Students will discuss and participate in real life Chris-tian activities.

SACRAMENTAL CATCH-UP: (any age or grade level) Are your children in a grade other than grade 1 or 2 and not made First Communion? Have they not been baptized? Are they in high school and not confirmed? Register them. We will prepare them for the sacraments so they may join their age ap-propriate peers. Older children usually learn concepts more quickly. Correct instruction will place them on a fast track so they may not require the full two-year traditional program.

OPEN ENROLLMENT: We have an open enrollment prac-tice at St. Mary’s, registering students at any time throughout the year. That is, children may begin classes at any point in the year and at any age.

REGISTRATION FORMS ARE AVAILABLE AT BOTH CHURCH ENTRANCES.

Complete the form and drop in the collection basket or mail to the rectory.

If you registered last year, there is no need to re-register.

Classes begin September 13, 2015 at 8:45 a.m. to 9:50 a.m. Parents are asked to attend this first class

to meet with the director.

If you have questions, contact Diane DiSanto, Pastoral Associate, at [email protected]

or at 401-274-3434 ext. 176.
