We sometimes tell children that when they are

older, they will understand more. And that is

certainly true. They will grow in knowledge. And

many of the things that puzzle them now will

puzzle them no longer. Going to bed at night

will come to be seen as a privilege instead of

a punishment. This increased understanding,

however, will not eliminate, nor even diminish

their sense of wonderment. Everything that they

learn will open the door to other things, yet to

be learned.

Some people turn to religion, seeking solutions to

the mysteries that perplex them. They think of the

Bible as an answer book. All they have to do is

read in the right places, and they will find

explanations of just about everything. But that is a

misconception of Sacred Scripture. The truth is

that the Bible is filled with mystery from front

to back. Consider, for example, what Jesus said

of Himself: “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” His audience was puzzled by that

statement. They whispered among themselves,

wondering what it meant. How could He possibly

have come down from heaven? The very idea

seemed preposterous. There He stood, a very

ordinary-looking man. They knew Him. They knew

His family. What did He mean by this absurd talk

about coming down from heaven? Jesus was

aware of their murmuring and responded to it. But

His comments did not resolve the mystery. He did

not give them a clear and concise answer to their

question. This was His typical method of teaching.

He expected people to think for themselves. One

day a man asked Him if it was right to pay taxes to

Caesar. But Jesus did not give him a yes-or-no

answer. He simply said: “Give to Caesar the things that belong to Caesar, and give to God the things that belong to God.” The man had to decide for

himself. Another man asked Him: “Who is my neighbor?” In response, Jesus told the story of the

Good Samaritan, and then left the man to answer

his own question.

The Christian faith does not ever pretend to take

the wonder out of life. Nothing can do that. We

will always have more questions than answers.

There is no end to mystery. We cannot resolve it,

and we cannot escape it. The only solution lies in

learning to live with it. How are we to deal with

PASTOR’S PEN

that part of life which we do not understand, and

perhaps, never will?

The best way to do that is to handle it with faith.

This does not mean that we are to accept mystery

without question. To do that would be a form of

intellectual suicide. When God gave us the power

to think, He obviously intended us to use it. Many

of the world’s mysteries have been cleared up

by people who took the time and made the effort

to question them. And that process is far from

over. At this very moment, in laboratories around

the world, scientists are asking questions and

looking for answers. Faith does not preclude

critical thought. It is, instead, a part of the energy

that sustains critical thought. Why does the

scientist keep going back to his laboratory to look

for an answer? It is because he believes there is

one. He may never find it. In fact, it may not be

found in his lifetime. So even the scientist handles

mystery by faith, though he may not call it that.

This same principle applies in the broader arena

of life. Everyday, we are compelled to live with

things and to work with ideas that are beyond the

range of our understanding. Questions surround

us on every side. And answers are hard to find.

The church still grapples with that statement,

“the bread that came down from heaven”. The

Trinity is an eternal mystery and so is the Blessed

Sacrament. We do not understand either one. But

we accept them by faith. Like the ancient psalmist,

we “taste and see the goodness of the Lord”.

Mysteries that baffle the mind are hard enough.

Mysteries that break the heart are even worse.

We also have to live with those. If God is love, why

do we see and experience so much suffering?

No one understands that. It does not make sense.

Sometimes, we are almost overwhelmed by it. But

faith keeps us from giving up. Like the scientist, we

keep on living and working, believing that there is

an answer, and that someday we will know what it is.

We tell our children that when they are older, they

will understand more. Perhaps God is telling us the

same thing – that when we are truly grown up we

will understand. In the meantime, we live by faith

and not by sight.

Regulations for all volunteers, whether from school or parish, who come in contact with children.

If you presently work with children, or if you are planning to volunteer to work

with children in school, the Holy Family Center, or Catechesis (CCD),

you must comply with these regulations. The Archdiocese of Miami has established

regulations to ensure the safety of children and vulnerable adults. These regulations apply

to salaried employees of the Archdiocese of Miami, as well as all non-salaried individuals,

18 years of age or older, that work with children.

How important it is to realize that, even though this might be an extra

burden on us, it is done for a very worthy purpose, the well-being and safety of our children.

These are the requirements for all non-salaried personnel:

• Fingerprinting through the Archdiocese of Miami

• Virtus Workshop

• Completion of Virtus on-line assignments

• Completion of volunteer application

• Signed Code of Personal Conduct

A Virtus workshop has been scheduled at the Epiphany Parish Hall on

Saturday, September 9 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Note that you need to register online at virtusonline.org in order to guarantee your spot in the workshop.

If you have already attended the Virtus Workshop, make sure you are completing the

on-line assignments. Instructions were given to you when you attended Virtus. Assignments

are quite simple. At the time of the audit, we’ll ask you to provide us with a print out form

from the Virtus site saying that you are up to date with these mini assignments.

Fingerprinting through the Archdiocese will be available in our School at Religious Education office on

Monday, August 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. &

Wednesday, September 6 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Please call the Religious Education office at 305.665.0037 to make an appointment.

No one will be fingerprinted without an appointment.

You can also choose to visit one of the centers designated by the Archdiocese to do fingerprinting.

Pre-registration is required, visit www.adorn.sofn.net to be fingerprinted at any of the other locations.

Volunteer applications and Code of Personal Conduct statements may be obtained

in the Religious Education Office. Anyone not complying with these regulations

will not be able to work with children in any capacity. It is our hope that everyone

understands the reasons for these regulations.

Let us recall Mother Theresa’s words when inviting people to service,

“I am giving you an opportunity to do something beautiful for God.”

YOU HAVE A BEAUTIFUL HEART

Every once in a while, you come across a story

that, not only makes you feel good but lets you

see how God intervenes without you knowing it.

In the winter of 1945, Franklin W. Hobbs was a 21

year-old Corporal in the Army Signal Corps

stationed in Iwo Jima. One day, he stumbled

upon a dead Japanese soldier with an envelope

sticking out of his pocket. It contained a child’s

drawing and a photo of a baby. Hobbs took it as

a reminder of the fierce battle on Iwo Jima.

More than 30 years later, Hobbs’s wife who had

prayed for years for the little baby in the photo,

suggested that they try to return the envelope

with the photo to the family of the dead soldier.

They contacted the Japanese Embassy, and the

process began. Weeks and months went by with

no success in locating the family. Then they

finally got a break. An elderly woman recognized

the baby in the ad they had placed in the

newspaper. She came forward and told the

Japanese agents that the name of the baby was

Yoko Takegawa. Imagine, half way around the

world, there was only one person out of millions

of people who saw that ad and helped identify

the baby. Who do you think intervened?

It so happened that Yoko had moved to the

United States years before When they tracked

her down and showed her the photo and the

drawing that her father carried with him during

the war, she cried and said she would treasure

this gift for the rest of her life.

Later on, she did meet Franklin Hobbs and wept

in his arms and said, “You have a beautiful heart.

God must love you.” They kept in contact for

many years because of a lost drawing and a

photo of a baby Hobbs never forgot her words,

“You have a beautiful heart and God must

love you.”

Will be re-opening next Sunday, August 27 during the 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Masses.

CHURCH OF THE EPIPHANY WEBSITE We invite you to visit the website of the Church of the Epiphany and become familiar with the many activities of our parish community.

C H U R C H O F T H E E P I P H A N Y

When we gather as a Community of Faith to

celebrate the Eucharist together, let us keep in

mind the simple things we have always known

and should always practice in order to reverently

celebrate Mass:

GREET YOUR FELLOW CHRISTIANS as you

enter the church. Keep an atmosphere

of prayer in church. Take time to meet each

other after Mass outside the church. Avoid

talking in church after Mass. Other people want

to continue praying.

BLESS YOURSELF WITH HOLY WATER as you

enter the church. We recall the saving waters of

our Baptism and the Father calling us by name as

His children.

GENUFLECT WITH REVERENCE as you greet

Our Lord present in the Tabernacle. Our

expression of honor and reverence to the Lord

should not appear as if we were tripping, as if

our attention were really directed elsewhere.

PARTICIPATE FULLY DURING THE MASS. Pray

the responses with full voice and enthusiasm.

Sing the glories of God as you participate with

your whole heart. St. Augustine reminds us that

those who sing, pray twice!

MISSALETTES ARE PROVIDED for those who

need to follow the Mass with the printed word.

Please return them to their place in the pews

before you leave Church.

RECEIVE THE LORD IN COMMUNION WITH

REVERENCE. He is our Savior and Lord, our

strength and nourishment, our God. We should

prepare well to receive Holy Communion. In

many instances, this preparation will demand the

confession of our sins in the Sacrament of

Reconciliation.

C H U R C H E T I Q U E T T E

STAY TO THE END OF MASS until the last note

of the final hymn. What scandal we give our

children when we show how little we respect the

Holy Mass. Can we not stay and pray with Him

for just one hour?

LEAVE YOUR PLACE IN ORDER. Be kind to the

next person occupying your pew. The kneelers

make a lot of noise if they are not placed in their

appropriate positions quietly.

READ THE BULLETIN. Be an informed Catholic

person. Take home the bulletin each week and

read it. Read about our Parish programs that help

us to grow spiritually and as a community, such

as the weekly Scripture programs; Why Catholic

program; R.C.I.A. and much more.

DRESS APPROPRIATELY FOR MASS! Mother

always told us to dress in "our Sunday best."

Dress appropriately for the Lord's banquet. It is

He we come to honor as a Community. Shorts

are never appropriate for church, except for little

boys. Give as much thought to your dress for

Sunday as you would any other important event

in your life. The manner in which we dress says

volumes about our faith in the Holy Sacrifice of

the Mass. God does not care but we must!

REMINDER TO PARENTS.

The Holy Family Center provides loving care for

infants, crawlers and toddlers during the 9:30

and 11:00 a.m. Masses. The Sunday Preschool for

3-year-olds, 4-year-olds and Kindergartners are

in session every Sunday during the 9:30 and

11:00 a.m. Masses. We offer these programs to

families with young children in order to give

parents an opportunity to participate at Mass

without distraction. Parents need this time to

pray without preoccupation.
