Parish Mission Statement

We, the members of Holy Ghost Parish, are one body of Roman Catholic

people with diverse gifts and blessings, who share responsibility for the

transformation of ourselves and our world according to the teachings and

example of Jesus Christ.

Fed by the Holy Spirit, we nurture our faith through private prayer, liturgy

and sacraments, through life-long learning and teaching of Gospel values,

and through love and support of each other.

Empowered by the same Spirit, we live our faith in action through the

ministries of service, social justice, evangelization and witness, because all

are called to one and the same goal: unity with God, now and forever.

Amen.

SUNDAY REFLECTION

POST-SUMMER CHALLENGES

With any luck, summer delights will continue a while past last weekend’s Labor Day: refreshing recreation (with maybe an occasional swim) or enjoyable relaxation on the deck (with tasty outdoor grilling). Truth is, for some of us, this year’s Labor Day came way too early. With many schools back in session for a while already, mealtimes and driving schedules needed readjustment to coordinate youth sports with adult commitments. Some religious education and parish programs resumed, too. No surprise, then, that this weekend’s scriptures sound a little like post-summer challenges. For instance, Wisdom reminds us that believers in God can never be content with “timid deliberations” and “unsure plans.” Paul challenges longtime friend and follower Philemon to “let the good you do be voluntary.” Jesus instructs “great crowds” traveling with him—including us—on three things necessary for all true disciples to accomplish. On this early autumn weekend, our scriptures describe disciples’ lifelong labors. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Eastern Catholic and Orthodox Christians share a love for the Byzantine liturgy because it is during the Eucharist that the Church is most true to its identity, expresses its integrity, and discovers its vocation. Eastern Catholic and Orthodox Christians celebrate essentially the identical liturgy, with only very slight variations. It is a fairly complex ritual weaving together three separate layers of prayers: a liturgy prayed in the sanctuary by priests, often hidden by a curtain or screen; a liturgy sung by the assembly and led by a deacon in front of a screen formed of painted icons; and a third layer of private prayer by the priest, who prays in support of the deacon and the faithful. It is an eyes-wide-open experience, gorgeous in visuals, and filled with the sound of God’s people singing prayer. The energy of the worship centers on the presence of Christ, largely through an awareness of heaven touching earth when the Church gathers to celebrate. In the late twentieth century, Latin Rite Catholics were encouraged to embrace a style of worship that was “full, conscious, and active,” a value that has never been lost in the East. The liturgy has great impact in its beauty, in its poetry and contemplation, and by the actions of bowing, signing with the cross, and chanting that are required of the assembly. Contact with the Eastern Church reveals some key values that have been obscured in our own Church and are slowly being recovered. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

O God, our hope and refuge, in our distress

we come quickly to you. Shock and horror

of that tragic day have subsided, replaced now with an emptiness, a longing for an innocence lost.

We come remembering those

who lost their lives in New York, Washington D.C., and Pennsylvania.

We are mindful of the sacrifice of

public servants who demonstrated the greatest love of all by laying

down their lives for friends. We commit their souls to your

eternal care and celebrate their gifts to a fallen humanity.

We come remembering and

we come in hope, not in ourselves, but in you.

As foundations we once thought secure have been shaken, we are

reminded of the illusion of security. In commemorating this tragedy,

we give you thanks for your presence

in our time of need and we seek to worship you

in Spirit and in truth, our guide and our guardian.

Amen.

A Prayer For Our Church

Heavenly Father, in every age, you have been our refuge. Yet again and still, we stand before you asking for your protection on your Holy Church. We place our Church in your hands, for without you we can do nothing. May Jesus, our High Priest and true compass, continue to lead her in every thought and action to be an instrument of justice, a source of consolation, a sacrament of unity, and a manifestation of your faithful covenant. For the victims of abuse and their families, pour out your healing and your peace. For the leaders of your Church, pour out your Spirit to guide them and inspire their decisions. For those who have followed your call to serve you and your people in holiness, sustain them by your grace. For all the faithful who are searching for answers, embrace them with your love, restore their trust, console them with your clear Gospel message, and renew them with your sacraments. We ask this in the name of your Son and our Brother, and through the Holy Spirit, who lives and reigns with you forever and ever. Amen.

Human experience and psychological research confirm the teachings of Scripture that

practicing forgiveness is good for our health and happiness and that refusing to forgive can bind

us in depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. We may not feel like forgiving, but God calls us

to embody pardon and mercy in imitation of the divine forgiveness we have received.

Learn the dynamics of forgiveness and how it can bring healing

to your personal life, your family, and our church.

Enjoy an all you can eat lunch, while you break open scripture.

Marriage Ministry Needs YOU!

Catholic marriages and families are essential “Building Blocks” of our Church and our society. A building is only as strong as Its foundation. From its inception, the foundation of the family has been a strong marriage! Unfortunately, statistics show that Catholic marriages are stressed and faltering at the same rate as “non–Catholic” marriages. Our Marriage Ministry has identi-fied the need to have more enriching opportunities for couples no matter how long they have been together. We have provided celebratory events and practical, strengthening programs throughout our Eastern DuPage Deanery. Our goal is to continue to provide these exceptional programs on a regular basis at local parishes for years to come. This Marriage Ministry is taking a leadership role by encouraging all married couples to become as healthy, strong, and resilient as possible. We, the laity, and the clergy, ARE the Church and this is our responsibility. With your help we will continue to grow. What will your legacy be? If you want to be a part of this ministry that encourages our fellow parishioners, friends, adult children, and grandchildren to be messengers of the “good news” about marriage, then consider joining our ministry as either: A Representative of your parish OR A member of our Planning Team.

Check your bulletin for future events to attend! For more information, please: Email: Melissa Nelson@ [email protected] or by phone: (708) 214-6411
