In the 1991 movie “City Slickers”, the grizzled cowboy Curly enlightens the visiting New Yorker Mitch, about facing his fears and finding true peace in life. On horseback Curly says the key is just “one thing.” When Mitch enquires what that “one thing” is, Curly, with a raspy accent full of mystery says, “that’s what you have to figure out.” In the spirit of an ancient sage, Curly’s point was this: figure out the “one thing” in life that is most important to you. Start everything in life from there. At Northside, what is our one thing? What is the absolute most important thing in the hearts and minds of Northsiders? What is that SINGLE thing from which all other things must start? From which everything must start? I can answer that with no mystery at all: we must love unbelievers the way Jesus did. Jesus loved unbelievers. Jesus didn’t just tolerate people whose lifestyles and life choices were contrary to God’s will, He loved them. He could have easily condemned them, but He didn’t. He sought them out. He pursued them in order to know them and talk with them. He ate with people that others found offensive. He attended the parties of people that church people wouldn’t be caught dead attending. His love of unbelievers so characterized His life and ministry that people called him “a friend of sinners” (Luke 7:34). But even more remarkable than Jesus’ love for unbelievers is their love for Him. They reciprocated His acceptance (if you remember, most of the religious folks didn’t exactly welcome Jesus with open arms, more like clinched fists). But lost people flocked to Jesus. There was a magnetic attraction based on the power of his love for them. He loved them and they felt it. And feeling loved can change a person’s life. The New Testament tells us to love others more than it tells us to do anything else (it’s commanded at least 55 times). Many churches love one another. And that’s important too. But the reality is, that many dying churches love one another. The question is: do you love others? Outsiders? Unbelievers? Sinners? People who are Different? Are you willing to let God love them through you? When an unchurched person walks in our door on Sunday morning, the question they are asking is not about doctrine, preaching style, dress code, or money. The question on their mind is this, “will these people love and accept me?” This is not a question of church size. It’s a question for your heart and mine. One thing…from which everything else must start…we must love unbelievers the way Jesus did. Amazing August Missions

I went on an interesting mission trip on July 18 and got to see thinking outside the box on a grand scale. A man in Texas had a vision to bless a ministry with two motorcycles. He paid for them and then he and another man rode them to Paxton, FL to give them away. 1100 miles in three days and passed on the blessing to a ministry group from Crestview! I also met Tim from the International Mission Board at the gathering so there is no telling where this will take us in the future. It is a big world and we need to get out there and mix it up a bit! The Klothes 4 Kids effort for the Pathway Christian Recovery Ministries, formerly the PC Rescue Mission, is currently underway. We have been collecting clothing and school supplies for the kids. Every little bit helps and distribution is not until the 16th of August. If you have any last minute additions, drop them in the collection box in the HUB or at the church office and we will get it to them. There are numerous volunteer positions at the Pregnancy Resource Center available for those with a heart to serve and willingness to share. The openings include receptionist, client assistants (counselors), public relations (advertising), earn while you learn facilitators, father’s ministry leader, and baby boutique preparation. Quite a variety and they will even train you so you’ll be a fully qualified volunteer! Upcoming events you are cordially invited to join us for include:

August 1 & September 5: (first Thursday of each month): Serve dinner at the PC Rescue Mission from 4-6pm. Sign up in the HUB and come join us for a few hours of blessing.

August 25, 4:30pm: Missions meeting in rm.100. We’ll have refreshments! Bring your ideas and join us!

September: (date not set yet) ping pong tournament, movies, burgers, and popcorn at the Annex. This will be a huge fundraiser for Acts 1:8 and we need you to help us get some ministry projects funded!

October 12-19: Oaxaca, Mexico mission trip. Still have a few spots available so if you want to go, speak up quickly!

Lots of things going on and it is only going to get busier! And, as always, don’t hesitate to contact me with potential projects, ideas, questions or concerns at [email protected] or give me a call at 819-9106. We need your help, to help those outside of Northside and show the love of God.

To Our Church Family:

For your generous gift of love and

grace; for your kind and encouraging

words, cards and hugs; for the

laughter and warmth you bring to

our lives, we are grateful and

humbled. What a privilege to be a part

of this very unique family we

call Northside. Even though our roles

may change, our ministry does not.

The best is yet to come!

With much love, Brenda & Les
