This coming Sunday . . .
At a recent Gratitude and Generosity meeting, a member compared our congregation
to a bag of heart-shaped sweetheart conversation candies. You know the kind: they
have messages such as “Be Mine,” “Be True” and, simply, “Love You” printed on the
front. Along with the romantic messages, many also have heart-warming phrases such
as “Dream Big,” “Angel,” and “Smile” that apply to how our congregation reaches
out to the local, national and worldwide communities.
The purpose of candy hearts is to positively affect the people who receive them. In
the same way, we are called as God’s children to both share and act on God’s message
of love. The people of First Presbyterian do just that, and they do it with heart.
Indeed, our congregation is like a bag of those sweet, little candies when the package
is ripped open and the candies and their messages pour out like on Valentine’s Day. It
happens when members “Dream Big” on completing mission trips afar. It happens
when a member becomes a local family’s “Angel” by volunteering through the church
for Habitat for Humanity. It happens when a member puts a “Smile” on a fellow
member’s face during spiritual services provided within and outside the walls of our
own church.
Maybe you have been one of First Presbyterian’s candies and spread God’s love; or
maybe you have received God’s love through the acts of your fellow members.
Sharing God’s love takes heart and it takes resources, so we ask that you think
about making the world a sweeter place by giving from your heart and
pledging to First Presbyterian by Celebration Sunday on October 28. That day,
we will gather together for a single service at 10:15 a.m., dedicate our pledges for
2019, and share a potluck lunch to celebrate how members spread God’s message of
love by acting upon it.

Angelo Van Bogart

to the church library. In this
book, World Relief immigration
experts Soerens and Yang move
beyond the rhetoric to offer a
Christian response to immigra-
tion. They put a human face on
the issue and tell stories of
immigrants’ experiences in and
out of the system.
With careful historical understanding and
thoughtful policy analysis, they debunk myths and
misconceptions about immigration and show the
limitations of the current immigration system.
Ultimately they point toward immigration reform
that is compassionate, sensible, and just, as they
offer concrete ways for us and our church to
welcome and minister to our immigrant neighbors.

A note of thanks from retired pastor Richard Moore . . .
Dear Members and Friends at 1st Presbyterian,
Both Martha and I want to let you know that we just recently returned from a three and a half week
trip to Scotland, which we owe in large part to your very generous gift when I retired in 2016.
How was Scotland? It was stunningly beautiful, amazing, wonderful, incredible, and as they like to
say in Scotland, “brilliant!” We spent the lion’s share of our time in Glasgow, visiting museums,
churches, gardens and parks, shops and restaurants, and where we often enjoyed attempts at
deciphering the Glaswegian dialect of some of the natives.
Though Glasgow was our base, we traveled to several areas including majestic Loch Lomond (the
largest freshwater lake in Britain), Oban with a stop at the famed distillery for a wee dram of
whiskey, and Glencoe to experience the mystical craigs and straths (peaks and river valleys) of the
Highlands.
Later we traveled south to Ayrshire for a visit to Culzean Castle and on to Alloway to see the 18th
century birthplace of the beloved ‘Rabbie’ Burns and the museum that displays the poet’s artifacts.
We took photos of the 13th century Brig o’Doon (bridge), the subject of one of Burn’s most well
known poems. Though we didn’t see any of the famed “hairy coos” (Highland cows, that is), we saw
plenty of sheep grazing in lush green fields.
Our adventures also included a train trip to the resort town of Largs on the Firth of Clyde. The
next day we headed in the opposite direction to Stirling Castle, the sight of many a battle between
the Jacobite Scots and English.
Then it was off to several days in Edinburgh, visiting museums, the Castle, Holyrood Palace, the
house associated with Protestant Reformer John Knox, the magnificent gardens adjacent to Princes
Street, St. Giles Church (known as the mother church of Presbyterians), and a short day trip to
Rosslyn Chapel (made extra famous by Dan Brown’s “The Da Vinci Code”).
We especially enjoyed worshiping in several of the churches. Our first Sunday was at Paisley Abbey
where we heard the church’s excellent choir and magnificent organ. After worship, congregants
welcomed us warmly at their coffee hour. Glasgow Cathedral was the following Sunday, with
another lovely choir and fine organ. Our experience at St. Giles in Edinburgh was especially
meaningful with the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper celebrated.
By the way, at another church we visited, I actually got to play their historic organ!
As far as our culinary experience goes, we found, to our surprise, that haggis was (to us) delicious
and became a favorite. Other favorites were fish and chips and afternoon tea with scones.
I could go on, but suffice it to say, we had a grand and glorious time and feel deeply grateful for
your generous gift that made it possible. So once again, thank you so very, very much!
Affectionately and gratefully yours,
Richard and Martha
