IlearnedtoplaychesswhenI was 10, and the medievalboardgamehasbeenapas-sion of mine ever since. Myfirst instructor was a neigh-borhood friend, Buddy Tay-lor, and I still remember thethrillIgotwhen, afterseveralmonthsofplay,Ifinallybeathim. To win at chess, youneed patience and the abil-itytothinkaheadasyoutrytoanticipateyouropponent’spotentialmoves.Italsohelpstobe familiarwithsomedif-ferent strategies that haveworked for other successfulplayersinthepast.Mostim-portantly, though, youmustknow your various chesspieces and their purposes, abilities, andlimitations.Forexample, it is imperative toknow that the knight, sym-bolizedbyahorse’sheadandseemingly limited by his ir-regular move pattern, oftenchargesoutaheadoftheoth-erpiecestoboldlyattack,andistheonlypieceontheboardthat can jump over otherswhilemoving.It’salsoimpor-tanttoknowthatthequeen,theonly“female”chesspiece,possessesgreatpowerandin-fluence,andisveryworthyofprotecting.Andnoplayergetsveryfarwithoutknowingthatthe lowly and underappreci-atedpawn,oftenthefirstone
sacrificed, plays a crucial role whencalledupontostandfirmandprotectamorehighly-valuedpiece. The same basic truth applies if achurchistobesuccessfuland“win.”The apostle Paul wrote extensivelyabouttheearlychurch, andmuchofour later understanding comes fromhis insights. In1Corinthians12,helikensthechurchtoabodyconsistingofmanydifferentparts,eachwithanimportantroletoplay.Thefeet,hands,ears,andeyeseachprovideadiffer-ent but much-needed function, andeachonecontributestothehealthofthewhole.InEphesians4,Paulwritesthat some in the body are called toplantnewchurches, whileothersaretospeakonbehalfoftheLord.Thereare others in the body whose job isto reach out and offer Christ to lostpeople, whilestillothersarecalledtopastor localcongregationsandmakepractical sense of Scripture. God’splan is that everyone in the churchhasaspotandafunction, agiftandaplacetoexerciseit.Neitherchurchesnor chessboards function well withtoo many bishops, and a body (hu-manorChrist’s)cannotmoveforwardifeveryoneistryingtobethespeakingmouthandnoone the listening ear,or there’s an overabundance of eyesseeingfuturevisions,butnotenoughlegswillingtoworktotakethemthere.Findyourpassion,findwhatyoudowell,andyou’llfindyourplace.
