They turned to the days when thousands fled before a small com- pany, only to find that had been reversed upon their heads. And in the midst of this there is God making this offer, “In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and trust shall be your strength.” (30:15). All they needed to do was to turn back to God and his statutes, rest in his ways, quietly (submissively) obey, and trust in his faithfulness to save and heal their wounds. When it comes to turning to God from a life lived in the other direcon, it can take me. It takes me to learn new habits. It takes me to undo hurt and damage. It takes paence and discipline to undergo transformaon. The psalmist says “. . . as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.” (Ps. 103:12). God also reminds his people that if they would but turn to him that “He will surely be gracious to you at the sound of your cry.” (Isa. 30:19). The Lord waits to be gracious to you . . . let him.

CHURCH OF CHRIST

The Lord Waits to Be Gracious to You

(Isaiah 30:15-19)

We have all likely been there at some point in our lives – that place where you feel like you are doing

all you can and no matter what you try or who you turn to things just seem to get worse. It may have to do

with work, or with school, or with home, or with church. We try our best and then try harder. Finally we

break and turn to allies in our struggle only to learn that they are of little or no help in solving the problem,

because it has gotten too big, too out of hand. Then we turn to our “strengths”, which turn out to be what

we have always done only to have them bounce back on us with even more force. And the real tragedy is

that we can still manage to live life and look fairly normal and under control to most people.

Then, suddenly, it happens – life breaks and we find ourselves sitting in the middle of a harvest of self-

reliance and pride that we are too embarrassed to expose. Only we can’t hide it anymore – job loss, dropping

out of school, family breaks apart, and what has passed for faith fails. We are carted away from the life we

thought we had. And the reality is that this can happen to us and we can still occasionally keep up the façade,

but make no mistake, we are broken beyond our capacity to heal and recover. So we spend the rest of our

days pursuing what we can, grabbing parts of life that destroy us from the inside, still too proud or embar-

rassed to take hold of the salvation that God offers.

This was the situation in Israel, when Isaiah was preaching to them. Assyria was approaching and Is-

rael’s response was fear instead of faith. They turned to Egypt, whose help Isaiah describes as “worthless and

empty.” They turned to the speed of their horses, but they were “sped away.” They turned to the swiftness

of their army, but the pursuer was swifter. They turned to the days when thousands fled before a small com-

pany, only to find that had been reversed upon their heads.

And in the midst of this there is God making this offer, “In returning and rest you shall be saved; in

quietness and trust shall be your strength.” (30:15). All they needed to do was to turn back to God and his

statutes, rest in his ways, quietly (submissively) obey, and trust in his faithfulness to save and heal their

wounds. When it comes to turning to God from a life lived in the other direction, it can take time. It takes

time to learn new habits. It takes time to undo hurt and damage. It takes patience and discipline to undergo

transformation.

The psalmist says “. . . as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions

from us.” (Ps. 103:12). God also reminds his people that if they would but turn to him that “He will surely be

gracious to you at the sound of your cry.” (Isa. 30:19). The Lord waits to be gracious to you . . . let him.

*Communion—We celebrate the resurrection of our Lord every Sunday (“first day of the week”) through a time of communion known as the Lord’s Supper. The “unleavened bread” represents His body and the “fruit of the vine” (cup of grape juice) represents His blood shed on the cross. As our guest, you are welcome to

participate, though you are not required to do so. *Giving– We are challenged to be good stewards of God’s blessings by supporting the various ministries of the church through a weekly collection that is taken during our worship time. You are welcome to give, but

please do not feel as though you must.
