Sunday April 8, 2012Sunday of the Resurrection

Easter Sunday, Year B

Gospel John 20:1-9Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. 2So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, ‘They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.’3Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went toward the tomb. 4The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. 6Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, 7and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. 8Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead.

Thoughts on the Gospel‘The Gospels do not describe what happened to Jesus at the moment of resurrection; they recount how his followers experienced its effects. In fact,

all of the Easter readings focus on the implications of the resurrection in the lives of Jesus’ followers. ‘Paul instructs his converts that joined to Christ, they must now live a new way. Having been raised with Christ from the dead, they must purge themselves of their old way of living. They are on the threshold of newness. A wondrous world of mystery has opened up before them, inviting them to step into it.‘We are not unlike those first followers. Though we know well the Easter story, we never seem fully to grasp its meaning. Like them, we so often continue to live burdened with our dashed hopes and with our misunderstanding of God’s mysterious power. Like them, we come to the tomb and expect to find death, but instead we find signs of a new life that we cannot even begin to comprehend. Like them, we do not realize that our history has been broken open and is now filled with the resurrected presence of Christ.‘Easter is a time to celebrate life, to value life in all of its forms and at all of its stages. A wondrous world of mystery has opened up before us, inviting us to step into it.

GOVERNMENT SHOWS SUPPORT FOR ANTI-BULLYING EFFORTS

SENIORS RIDE FOR JUST $10 IN MAYThe Saskatchewan Transportation Company (STC) is offering seniors another opportunity to explore Saskatchewan at a great price. Throughout the month of May 2012, Seniors 60+ will be able to ride anywhere along the STC network for only $10 one-way.

"We offer this promotion as a means to present seniors with the opportunity to get out and connect with friends and family or explore Saskatchewan in a convenient manner," Minister responsible for STC Jim Reiter said.

STC reaches 290 communities. The extensive coverage STC provides gives Saskatchewan seniors province-wide access to this offer. STC has offered

similar promotions since September 2009."We were impressed with the increase in ridership due to the senior seat sales in 2011," STC President and CEO Shawn Grice said. "We hope this year's senior seat sale will provide our riders with a chance to reacquaint themselves with the positive travel experience that STC has become known for."

In 2011, senior ridership during seat sale months grew 9.0 per cent over 2010. Ridership growth was driven partly by improved amenities on coaches. STC coaches have been equipped with free Wi-Fi, power outlets, and increased leg room in order to advance the level of convenience and comfort provided to passengers.

The week of March 30 to April 5 has officially been proclaimed as Pink Revolution Anti-bullying Week. The Ministry of Education is demonstrating its support for anti-discrimination efforts with a focus on events and initiatives coinciding with this officially proclaimed week.Pink Revolution Week kicked off in Saskatoon on March 12 and had a subsequent flag raising ceremony on April 1. This Saskatchewan made event was coordinated by the Anti-bullying Network, which is comprised of the Boys and Girls Club, The Avenue Community Centre, Youth Launch, Restorative Action Program, Saskatoon Police Service, Affinity Credit Union, and various local school divisions. Ministry officials attended both the launch and the flag raising to offer greetings and show support.Pink Shirt Day coordinated through Red Cross is another initiative that is supported by the

ministry and by the Government of Saskatchewan."These events are opportunities for communities and individuals to come together for one common goal: to celebrate diversity and to stand against discrimination," Education Minister Donna Harpauer said. "The Government of Saskatchewan believes that all students have the right to a caring, respectful and safe school environment where bullying is not tolerated."The Ministry of Education has supported anti-bullying efforts by working with education partners to develop a provincial anti-bullying strategy, encouraging school divisions to work with community organizations, and by providing financial assistance to programs like the Kids Help Phone to ensure youth across Saskatchewan have access to professional counseling services 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
