CHAIR’S REPORT

Since being elected in March last year, I have enjoyed working with the CIPR Scotland committee, CIPR London and engaging with members across Scotland.

Monthly committee meetings have enabled us to plan and carry out a programme of activity throughout the year, including events, training, the PRide Awards and our first conference in many years. CIPR London has been informed of our plans and developments throughout the year.

Our partnerships with other membership organisations have allowed us to offer additional events, training and conferences to our membership, some at a discounted rate or for free.

It is only with the help and support of volunteers of the CIPR Scotland committee that the CIPR is able to offer such valuable services in Scotland and I would like to thank the committee for their time, efforts and support over the year.

Standing down from the committee this year are Nicki Sturzaker, Neil Jones, Caroline Binnie and Jo-Anne Hamilton. Committee members who stood down early for personal/business reasons include Christina Cran, Elaine McKean, Iain Flemming, Aislinn Lunt, Ruth McLeod and Susan Nickalls. Committee members co-opted in their place include Candace Watermeyer, Ruth Fry and Kenny MacDonald. Thank you all for your time and efforts.

2013 will be a year of continuing to deliver the same high quality activity programme and now the structure is in place we can concentrate on the detail.

This year, we have worked hard and I am pleased with the achievements in developing current and new relationships, engaging better with our membership, increasing membership, running worthwhile and value for money events and

training and we are already gearing up for next year.

I’d like to finish by thanking a number of people who have helped make 2012/2013 a successful year. First of all, Jane Wilson and the CIPR London staff who have helped fund some of our activity in Scotland, assisted in responding to our requests and have been a great support.

It goes without saying that the members wouldn’t have received any of the events or training organised by CIPR Scotland without the Scottish committee.

Thank you all. You have used your expertise, skills and knowledge to make CIPR Scotland more visible, help our members and add value to the CIPR. A special thanks to Nicki Sturzaker for being my Vice Chair, Grant Thoms for being Treasurer and Joe Walton for stepping up to become Secretary.

Thanks also to our Secretariat, Elaine Fee, who has been flexible and enthusiastic in her role, being a great ambassador for CIPR Scotland.

MEMBERSHIP 2012/2013 At the time of the last AGM there were 732 existing members of the CIPR in Scotland. CIPR London set themselves and the regional groups a target to increase membership by 10% during the next 12 months.

Membership currently sits at 831 which is a yearly increase of over 13%.

The group promotional activities centered around events and training that added value to the membership in Scotland.

As with the other regional groups Scotland will have benefited from the introduction of free membership to students of CIPR accredited courses. Student memberships are currently at 158.

The location of members is focussed around the main conurbations and communication hubs of Scotland.

Most members are female representing 70% of the membership in Scotland.

There are 23 Fellows in Scotland and the group would like to congratulate Joyce Nisbet who was awarded her Fellowship in the summer. The committee were sad to hear of the passing of Arthur Fulton FCIPR, one of the founding members of CIPR Scotland, in January.

There are currently 109 Accredited Practitioners in Scotland

85 members completed the CIPR’s CPD programme to December 2012.

There were 52 enrolments onto CIPR registered courses in 2012 from members of the Scotland group.

There was an increase of 50% in the number of CIPR Diploma students 2012/2011. The Public Affairs Diploma at Queen Margaret University was introduced and ran for the first time in autumn 2012.

The group are working on our bi-annual membership survey, which will not only give us valuable information about our members, but it will help develop the activity programme for the rest of the year.

CIPR London granted £3,000 to funding a Secretariat, who has been instrumental in assisting with our administration of events and training as well as a liaison between sectoral groups. This has enabled the rest of the committee to press on with programming events and developing opportunities elsewhere. The group intend to apply for the same funding this year.

CIPR PRIDE AWARDS The 2012 PRide Awards in Scotland was the biggest PRide Awards held the UK in 2012.

CIPR London organised the awards in Scotland and CIPR Scotland assisted in sponsorship and promotion.

There were 142 entries this year. Three more than in 2011.

53 different organisations entered. Up nine from 2011.

A number of first time entrants were recorded which bodes well for the future.

The committee would like thank the judges, Juliet Simpson, Lynne Crossan, Kate Bond and Emma Wood for their time, fairness and feedback.

THE PRIDE AWARDS CEREMONY

Organisation of the 2013 PRide awards was led by Laura Sutherland with support from Cristina Dello Sterpaio and Candace Watermeyer.

The PRide awards ceremony was held at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange on 6 December.

345 guests attended. 30 more than in 2011.

Sponsorship in-kind was agreed for photography, videography and design of the award programme.

Reciprocal sponsorship continued with the Marketing Society in Scotland and a new partnership was formed with Institute of Directors in Scotland. In return the CIPR Scotland will also get the opportunity to attend and present an award at the Star Awards and Director of the Year Awards and represent the PR profession in the wider business community.

£1,750 of financial sponsorship was generated by CIPR Scotland.

The group also received 10% of entry income which amounted to £1,907.50

This was used to increase the value of the awards through a professional host, Catriona Shearer, the programme, enhanced table decorations, a live DJ and the interactive photo-booth that proved popular with guests.

On the evening a raffle was held to support Iprovision. Six high standard prizes raised £1179 on the night.

CIPR Scotland’s video sponsor was filming at the Awards and the video will be used to drive sponsorship in 2013.

Both the judges and the PRide Scotland team have fed back to CIPR London and made recommendations to ensure more effective processes in the future.

Work on the 2013 PRide Awards has already begun, ensuring sponsorship and a greater requirement for better venue costs are priorities.

TRAINING In response to the membership survey and a successful 2011/2012 the committee continued to organise the CIPR Scotland Freshly Brewed series of events under the guidance of Vice-Chair Nicki Sturzaker.

CIPR Scotland continued to promote training sessions organised by HQ to the Scottish membership.

ANDY GREEN ON CREATIVITY

Andy Green was commissioned to produce a new toolkit for the CIPR on creativity last year. To coincide with the launch of his new book, the committee organised a mini tour across Edinburgh and Aberdeen.

Andy delivered two different events in both cities, with the first being a Freshly Brewed half day training session in Edinburgh followed by a more informal creative evening in Aberdeen.

They were both well attended and positive feedback was received supporting Andy’s limitless energy and enthusiasm for the subject.

FRESHLY BREWED

Over the past 12 months CIPR Scotland has delivered five half-day training sessions under the Freshly Brewed brand. The themes of these sessions have very much been influenced by our membership survey

carried out in 2011 offering in-demand topics and budget friendly prices. The courses have been held either in Edinburgh or Glasgow and have been extremely well received.

In total 29 people, (17 members and 12 non-members), completed the Freshly Brewed training events, generating £3,717.53 before expenses.

EVENTS 2012/2013 has been the Scottish group’s busiest year for events on record. A range of events were held across Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen. The group are aware of the need to develop events in other cities in 2013/2014.

SOCIAL IN THE CITY

Following the four events organised in 2011/2012 the CIPR Scotland’s Social in the City series was expanded in 2012/2013.

Two new venues were sourced, the Landsdowne in Glasgow and the

Newsroom in Edinburgh. This was changed to the Fiddler’s Elbow for the last event due to renovation in the Newsroom.

Based loosely on the Social Summer series running in London, Social in the City was led by Secretary Joe Walton and committee members Laura Berry and Jo-Anne Hamilton. The events were designed to be cost effective (around £10 + fees), simple to organise and attend, with an emphasis on informal networking.

Eight events were organised, two more than in 2011. Each session was based around an engaging speaker on a subject related to online communications.

In total, over 146 tickets were sold to Social in the City events in 2012.

SOCIAL IN THE CITY: FOOD BLOGGER SPECIALS

An addition to the schedule was two special events based around blogger relations.

Two foodie venues, the Bakehouse in Edinburgh and Martha’s in Glasgow were the setting for two similar events featuring a food journalist, a blogger and a reviewer from the List

In Glasgow, the CIPR were joined by Jay Thundercliffe from the List, Cate Devine from the Herald and Graeme Taylor, a blogger at the scotslarder.com.

In Edinburgh, freelance food writer Alex Renton, Donald Reid, Food & Drink editor at the list, and Nadine Pierce, a food blogger at eatingedinburgh.com.

The Edinburgh event sold out in record time while the Glasgow event was close to capacity. Over 20 Guests attended each event.

AGM 2012

The Annual General Meeting of the Scotland Group of was held on Monday 12th March 2012 at Malmaison Hotel, Glasgow.

31 members registered for the evening organised by Caroline Binnie and Elaine McKean.

FELLOWS’ EVENT

A Fellows’ event was organised with the assistance of Julie McGarvie.

Held in October, nine out of the Scotland’s 23 fellows attended. CIPR Scotland funded the event at the Blythswood Hotel, where CIPR Chair Laura Sutherland hosted - drinks and canapés were provided.

The event was also an opportunity to have the Fellows discuss a winner for the Communicator of the Year PRide Award, having been presented with the shortlist.

MEET THE COMMITTEE

On 29th June last year, CIPR Scotland organised a ‘meet the committee’ event and also invited CEO, Jane Wilson.

This was an opportunity for members and prospective members to engage with the committee and talk about membership opportunities, requirements and discuss upcoming issues in the industry.

15 members and six committee members attended the event - most at a senior level and some that hadn’t been active in the CIPR for some time. Jane Wilson talked about the developments in Wikipedia and that a guidelines document had been created for CIPR members.

The event was videoed included short interviews with Scottish Chair, Laura Sutherland and member Kenny McDonald, Communications Manager, NHS Health Scotland.

LIFE AFTER LEVESON

National award winning journalist, James Cusick from The Independent came north in September to share his insights into the Leveson investigation.

He provided guests with his own thoughts as to what the final report could look like in terms of possible recommendations and the impact this would have on the industry.

Around 40 individuals attended this one-off event.

The event was chaired by Peter MacMahon, deputy editor of The Scotsman and hosted in the brand new space at Creative Scotland’s offices in Edinburgh.

32 tickets were sold (26 members and 6 non-members).

SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT EVENT

Over 60 members got their 2013 CPD off to an excellent start at a special event hosted by the Scottish Government at St Andrew’s House in January.

Leading members of the communications team - head of news Fiona Wilson, resilience communications head Andrew Slorance, and PR head Clare Smith - gave a fascinating insight into the communications at the heart of the Government.

Feedback on this free event for members was very positive and CIPR Scotland would like to thank Caroline Binnie for organising the event, Fiona, Clare and Andrew for their input and Elaine Mitchell from the Scottish Government team for all her help in coordinating the evening.

CIPR SCOTLAND PUB QUIZ

On 15th November 2012 the second CIPR Charity Pub Quiz pitting hacks against flacks has held in aid of STV Appeal. The event, led by Laura Berry, took place at Cargo in Edinburgh who donated the room and food on the night free of charge.

The event was attended by 60 plus guests with 10 teams entering all in all at a fee of £10 per head, raising a total of £585 after expenses.

Questions were drafted by committee members Grant Thoms and Laura Berry and Brian Welsh from the Big Partnership donated his time to be the compare for the evening.

Barefoot Wines donated a case of wine to be awarded to the winners, which was the STV team. The event also received coverage in The Scotsman business pages following the performance of their business desk.

CIPR SCOTLAND CONFERENCE

CIPR Scotland hadn’t held a conference in recent years.

“Four steps to unlocking online success” was developed through four stages of working and four separate speakers, each sourced because of their expertise.

53 people attended the conference. The split was almost 50/50 between members and non-members. We promoted the event through our member communication, social media, partners and through Federation of Small Businesses.

Laura Sutherland led the organisation and development of the conference and Joe Walton attended on the day to run a live Twitter feed. We also enlisted the help of a CIPR student rep to film the event to assist with future sponsorship.

The event made just over £2,000 profit and was on target. Work on a conference for later this year will start shortly.

MEMBER COMMUNICATIONS With solid foundations in place, the focus of the communications team was to continue to develop Scottish specific networks to promote activities of the group and the events.

CIPR SCOTLAND NEWSLETTER

Between March 2012 and February 2013 the CIPR Scotland has organised and sent:

As of January 2013, the CIPR Scotland specific mailings go to 813 registered recipients. Thanks to the work of Jo-Anne Hamilton, Ruth Macleod and Ruth Fry, the newsletters enjoy above expected open rates and responses.

CIPR SCOTLAND BLOG

The CIPR Scotland blog was given a new theme in 2013 to provide a cleaner look. Led by Joe Walton the group developed a guest blogging strategy using members of the committee and the Scottish PR community.

The blog nearly doubled its traffic from 4,758 in 2011 to 8,441 in 2012.

The blog sent a significant number of visitors onto the CIPR Scotland EventBrite page where people could book events.

The blog was further developed as a resource to house documents and presentations for attendees to view after the event to save time responding to individual enquiries.

SOCIAL MEDIA

The Social Media group have built on the previous good work in this area to develop the networks and consistency.

TWITTER @CIPR_SCOTLAND

This year the Twitter account has been handled by a small team acting on a rota; Joe Walton, Laura Berry and Laura Sutherland.

Twitter has grown from 1,220 followers in March 2012 to 1,848 followers in 2013.

An average of eight tweets a day were issued, with the majority of tweets promoting events and training, sharing CIPR blog content, tweets from those influential in the industry, as well as sparking up conversations with our members and followers.

Our first twitter competition to give away tickets to an event

The main improvement has been the forward planning activity through better use of Hootsuite. Tweets are planned and scheduled to appear during events. Hashtags are now monitored and encouraged to track conversations taking place before, during and after events.

The twitter account was the biggest referrer of traffic to the CIPR Scotland blog and EventBrite page.

LINKEDIN

CIPR Scotland's LinkedIn Group numbers have grown steadily throughout 2012, up from 115 group members in February 2012 to 337 on in February 2013.

In the latter three months of 2012, Kenny MacDonald and Joe Walton started a process to improve the CIPR Scotland LinkedIn Group.

A decision was made to vet membership of the group to counter growing spam on LinkedIn. Only those living in Scotland or with a relationship to Scotland and who work in communications field are allowed to join.

The Standard group templates were replaced with bespoke messaging promoting the CIPR to non-members. There has also been an attempt to encourage more discussion and, especially from group members, this is process will continue in 2013.

There has been a monthly increase of almost 19 members per month throughout 2012 compared to 9.5 members per month for the last six months of 2011.

FACEBOOK

Between March 2012 and the end of February 2013, the CIPR Scotland Facebook page has grown from 119 likes to 196.

Over the past six month 78 updates have been made to the CIPR Scotland Facebook page.

The page continues to drive people to events and blog posts and provide a platform where the CIPR community in Scotland can communicate.

VIDEO (YOUTUBE)

This year Capture Media came on board as the video sponsors for CIPR Scotland providing free video support through the filming and editing of events and training days as and when required.

Overall Capture Media filmed four events; Andy Green Creativity training workshop, Meet the Committee Breakfast, Social in the City Food Bloggers event and the CIPR Scotland PRide awards.

Between them the videos have received over 240 views on the CIPR Scotland YouTube channel and shared via the various social media channels and newsletters.

Chair, Laura Sutherland also used video around announcements and created a video with Julie McGarvey of 3x1 on how to create a winning PRide entry.

Videos were well received and in 2013 the committee will be looking at how to get more views of these videos, using them as a tool to further promote events, engage with members and promote the key values of the CIPR.

REPRESENTING THE MEMBERSHIP The group has made strides to reach out to members this year; seeking their views in response to government legislation for the first time in many years. The group has also been active in representing the profession in the press and building relationships with other membership association groups.

RESPONDING TO GOVERNMENT CONSULTATION

This year the CIPR Scotland committee worked with CIPR London to canvass the views of members in preparation to responding to two consultations that could affect the practice of public relations in Scotland.

30 responded to the questionnaire on the Lobbying Transparency (Scotland) Bill. CIPR London used the responses to build on their previous documents and responses in relation to the previous Westminster consultation.

After surveying members, the CIPR responded to the consultation stating that specific legislation is, to an extent, not necessary or appropriate. The CIPR is clear in saying that in this case legislation is not the correct response

Only a handful responded to the questionnaire about the Procurement Reform Bill (Scotland). The responses and issues raised were used to provide a short response, raising areas to be further explored.

Lessons learnt about the use of questionnaire methodology will be used by CIPR London if they

need to consult with members about this issue in the future.

STUDENT MEMBERS

When the CIPR Scotland reps were elected in November, CIPR Scotland made contact with them to discuss how we could support the students.

It was discussed and agreed that an all encompassing student event for all CIPR accredited courses would be a good way of integrating the Universities as well as offering the student an opportunity to meet with the CIPR Scotland committee and other PR professionals.

The student reps attended a committee meeting in January and they have been tasked to come up with a proposal and budget for the event. CIPR Scotland has committed to help fund the event.

PARTNERSHIP WORKING

During 2012/2013 the CIPR committee continued to build relationships with other professional bodies and working groups.

AMMO

AMMO was set up in 2011 with a view to bringing all marketing organisations together, to ensure best practice, sharing of information and events and to give a bigger voice to the industry. CIPR Scotland will continue to share information about events and training and assist where possible by representing the views of the membership.

IOD SCOTLAND

As well as being involved in our PRide Awards and the IOD’s Director of the Year Awards, CIPR members also benefit from the IOD’s training and events with a discount. More of a focus on sharing

of this information will be placed next year, ensuring our members are fully aware of the opportunities.

MARKETING SOCIETY STAR AWARDS

CIPR Scotland sponsors the PR category of the Star Awards and promotes the awards to its members. 450 guests from Scotland’s leading agencies and organisations attend the awards, demonstrating the highest level of creativity in strategy and campaigns.

CIPR Scotland presents the PR Award on the evening and CIPR branding is used across event material and in the venue.

ABERDEEN COMMUNICATIONS GROUP (ACG)

One event has been delivered in conjunction with the ACG this term – it was supporting Lunch ‘n’ Learn, but communication remains an issue, especially as there is no current Aberdeen representative on the committee.

We believe there is a restructure taking place of the Group. Laura Sutherland met with ACG earlier this month to reinstate the Memorandum of Understanding.

Steps are being taken to ensure that CIPR Scotland has a better presence in Aberdeen and as such, events and training and currently being developed in the north, the first being held at Robert Gordon University with Aberdeenshire Council and the City of Culture bid team, in May.

EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL MARKETING FESTIVAL

The EIMF was held last summer as part of the Edinburgh International Festival. CIPR London funded a platform for CIPR to talk about social media and the ‘Share This’ book.

Other agencies from across the UK also took part and made some innovative presentations.

It’s important for CIPR to be involved in this type of festival and to be seen to be active and leading the profession.

22 members took up the offer of free tickets to a reception at the EIMF. Guests were addressed by Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Secretary for Culture and External Affairs.

Earlier that day 28 members booked a free place at Innovation in Marketing and Communications. The event focused on how cutting edge practice and technique has delivered value and growth for brands and service.

INVESTOR RELATIONS SOCIETY EVENT: REPUTATION HAS SHAREHOLDER VALUE – HOW DO YOU SHAPE AND MEASURE IT?

Organised by the investor relations society in partnership with the other AMMO members, a panel of industry experts was invited to look at the viability of relating shareholder value to corporate reputation.

28 CIPR Scotland members took up the offer of a free place at this debate and drinks reception.

TREASURER’S REPORT 2012

The key figure in 2012 which stands out is the 400% increase in income from events, reflecting a busy year of Freshly Brewed training courses, Social in the City and member networking events such as Meet the Editor and Life after Leveson.

Income from members broke-even over the year with income from non-members, including sponsorship, in essence covering support for events and activities which don’t raise income.

Support from CIPR in the form of a regional support grant provided confidence to invest in secretariat support in the latter quarter of the year, however, this is off-set by VAT adjustments due to HQ from previous years.

Cashflow has improved through reducing outstanding debtors primarily through good invoice management. Overall, the group made a small surplus and contribution to ongoing reserves.
