Every year since I have been in Southsea I have been fascinated at see-ing flocks of Canada geese gather together on the sports field off the

Eastern Road preparing to leave the shores for the winter. When they are ready they take off and fly in precise V-formation and it is an enthralling sight! How do you suppose they do that? Do they attend V-formation flying school when they are young? I can just see an older goose project-ing a PowerPoint presentation against a birch tree and explaining to the younger birds that they must fly two feet to the outside wing of the goose in front of them, one foot behind and eighteen inches above its flight path so it will impress the humans below.

Dear Readers,

No, geese fly in a V-formation because flying in that exact spot allows them to fly in smoother air with less effort. If a goose falls out of posi-tion it immediately feels the added stress of flying on its own and moves back into position. Scientists estimate that by drafting on the wake of the goose in front of them the entire flock is able to fly 71% further than each of them could fly individually. To accomplish this incredible feat the stronger birds in the flock will rotate the lead position so that no one bird wears out. According to NASA, “This allows a flock of birds with differing abilities to fly at a constant speed with a common endurance.”The reason you never see a flock of sparrows fly in V-formation is because they are not going anywhere. They flit around the yard from tree to tree, but at the end of the day they are in the same area. They could try to learn to fly in a V-formation, but by the time they got the formation together they would already be to the next tree and not need it. The same is true about fellowship. If Christianity is about rituals, routines and morals, our fellowship will suffer. We can rearrange our groupings or try a number of novel small-group techniques, but they will be as awkward as sparrows trying to fly in formation. But when Christianity is a life of growing de-pendence on God through the joys and challenges of our circumstances, pooling our wisdom becomes a natural extension of that life for us as it is for geese to fly in formation. When God is more real to you than the weather and the events of your day, you’ll find him filling your conversations and fellowship will be im-mediate, powerful and alive. Ask yourself the question ‘Am I a goose or a sparrow’? Major MaryAdapted from an article by Wayne and Clay Jacobson –Lifestream Ministries

Easter 2012

We are privileged to have as our leaders for this important weekend, Lt. Cols. Ivor & Carol Telfer. Col. Ivor is Secretary

for Business Administration & Col. Carol is Assistant Chief Secretary, both based at Territorial Headquarters in London.

We are in for a fine weekend & it would be good if we could un-derpin our leaders in prayer.

We commence on Maundy Thursday with our Passover Meal at 7:30pm, which will prepare us for Good Friday when we shall gather in Palmerston Rd Precinct for a time of witness & worship from 11am to 11:45am.

This time of sharing will be preceded by our procession from Marmion Rd (Waitrose Car Park) through the precinct, leaving at 10:50am.This is a vital day for us to remind the world that Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice & so we need you on the march (if physically possible) & in the precinct. Be sure to be there!

The evening of ‘Reflection Around the Cross’ at 6pm will be sup-ported by the Band & Songsters as we consider, meditate & prepare for the wonder of Easter Day.Easter Saturday, April 7th, will be another time of sharing at 8am for our Prayer Breakfast & then into Easter Day when we shall share Prayer & Praise at 8:45am followed by breakfast and the glo-rious celebration of our Living Lord at 11am & 6pm.

A weekend not to be missed, so please take the leaflets & invite family & friends.

In addition, our friends at Portsmouth Citadel will be holding a Sun-rise Service near Clarence Pier & we are invited to share - details to follow.JB

New Soldier

The Corps Directory has now been updated and copies are available from CS-M John Burton. If your details need refining, please speak with Major Derek Smith who we thank for producing the latest edition. JB

Why am I going through with this today? Well, over a period of time I have felt that I want to get the most out of my life and

to fulfil my potential. But I realised that just doing the things I liked doing and wanted to do are not enough to make this happen.

I have to say this morning that I have come to a point where I know I want to be different. I still want to enjoy my life but I want there to be a point to it. Not just my life but also the hope of living eternal life in heaven - one day sometime but not for a long while yet. This morning’s step is just that. It is an indication to you all and to God that I want to live a different life as a soldier in The Salvation Army.

How do I know this? Well, I am not sure I can't be very specific about this. I cannot tell you that there has been a moment in time when I have gone through an experience which has changed me there and then, but I really do feel a desire to live a good life, to come to know God and what he wants of me, and then to help others to come to know this experience of his love through the way I live and my actions towards them.

I am not an angel, and still have my moments when others would wonder what on earth I am up to! I want to say thank you to my Mum, to other members of my family who have always loved me and to my friends in this church who have looked out for me as I have grown up. My wish is that I will make you all proud of who I am and what I will become. Lloyd Jennings

New Junior SoldiersApril Sharp, Junior SoldierApril has been attending South-sea Citadel, since first coming as a toddler with her Mother to Parent and Toddlers. She then progressed to Monday Club and Young People’s Musicals. It was through taking part in the first musical that April wanted to join the Singing Company. In her enrolment as a Junior Soldier by Major Mary Wolfe

(C.O.) she testifies (in her words): ‘I want to be a Junior Soldier because I want to help serve the community in God’s name. I feel this is the path I want to follow in life’.

Megan Scott, Junior SoldierMegan has been attending Southsea Citadel, commenc-ing in the Cradle Roll and then in the Primary having been dedicated in July 2000, by Ma-jor Amanda White. When her parents were posted away, she would attend Sunday School as often as possible, following in her family footsteps.

In her enrolment as a Junior Soldier by Major Mary Wolfe (C.O.) she testifies (in her words), ‘I would like to be a Junior Soldier be-cause I have been coming here all my life. My Mum, Nan, Uncles and Aunties were Junior Soldiers and I would like to follow God the way my family did’. T.M.

A great evening of fellow-ship and fun for BURNS

NIGHT was arranged by the Corps Communities Ministry Group under the leader-ship of Sandra Thomas. A three course meal, served to table by young people of the Corps was followed by Ceilidh dancing. Ninety five people attended the event

including friends attending the ‘Army’ for the first time. At the com-mencement of the evening, the Haggis was piped in and presented to table by a Scottish piper. (Picture) Many people took the floor for the Ceilidh dancing and an excellent time was had by all, conclud-ing with ‘Auld Lang Syne’.

Sunday Night Live was led by Captain Lynne (Associate Officer, Southsea Citadel) and Darren Shaw on the

theme of ‘Who do you think He is?’ From previously gathered responses to that question, three word-clouds were used on the multi media, the first being in the shape of a dove, which contained many words, the largest being ‘EVERYTHING’. The opening song was ‘Immortal, Invisible, God only wise’ to the tune of ‘To God be the Glory’, a notable combination. Darren played on the piano his own composition of music portraying the vision of God’s approach in 1st Ezekiel. The Senior band played ‘Faithful God’ and the Song-sters contributed with ‘My Lord and Christ. The meeting concluded with ‘Crown Him with many Crowns’

A.A. Update! The weather has been kind to us, living as we do

Fossil Fuel - A Parable from Soulwithaview’s Blog

The warning signs had been there for years. The world was slowly dying and resources were dwindling, yet people carried on the

same way they always had. Of course, there were pioneers and early adopters who all said that there was a solution, a new way forward. These few even demonstrated that the new power source

is carried out in all kinds of weather knowing that we are helping oth-ers. We too may experience stressful situations, but the Lord carries us through!

Once again, the three City Corps will be sharing in Standing Days and, after some stress of my own, I am able to confirm the following dates:Citywide: Friday 9th of March, Saturday 10th of MarchSupermarket: Saturday 14th April - Waitrose, SouthseaSupermarket: Saturday 12th May - Asda Bridge CentreCitywide: Saturday 2nd JuneRailway Stations: Monday 25th June to Friday 29th of JuneSupermarket: Saturday 30th June - Sainsbury, Commercial Rd Citywide: Friday 20th of July, Saturday 21st JulySupermarket: Friday 12th & Saturday 13th October - Sainsbury, FarlingtonIn addition, I will be approaching Waitrose Waterlooville and Asda Havant for token sponsorship. Also, Portsmouth Football Club (God will-ing!) for a bucket monetary collection.

From the holiness section of our Song Book I leave these words: I give thee my best, nothing less, nothing less, O gladly I give thee who loved me, my best. Trevor Sivyer, Annual Appeal Coordinator

Fossil Fuel cont...they had come to believe in was both pure and unlimited. It was not composed of the fossilised remains of what went before, but was a living flame that freely gave of itself to energise and renew. Rather than polluting the world to maintain the old way of life, the living flame would actively clean up as it burned and continually create new life wherever it went. But this new energy could not be controlled or contained. It could not be harnessed for profit or bottled for export. It could not be refined or distilled to better suit the consumers’ needs. So it was dis-credited, marginalised and people were told it was only for freaks and fanatics. And so the old ways continued – people used up every last ounce of what had gone before, trying to keep things alive by relying on what was dead. It wasn’t long before the world had choked itself to death and the living flame was left alone to mourn for eternity what might have been.....those who have ears, let them hear.......

Summer Camp News

When the letter came to say that there would be no summer camps this year we were really sad but knew straight away that we would

need to do something for our young people. So Major Mary and I went and visited a couple of venues for a possible camp. We chose the Queen Elizabeth II Activity Centre as this seemed suitable for our needs. It is at Manor Farm Country Park (where we have the corps bbq) and has four A-frame lodges and one cabin, we booked them all! We initially invited all of the children that come regularly to Sunday Club then contacted some of the smaller corps around. Most of our young people are able to come and we have three coming from Hedge End corps (we still have a few places available). We will be doing lots of activities which will include kayaking, canoeing, climbing and zipwires. All of these will be supervised by the centre staff. We will also be doing lots of other activities and, using Scripture Union material, we will be doing bible studies and going into small groups. On the following Sunday morning, 2nd September, the children who attended camp will be taking part in the meeting at Southsea. Fundraising events will be happening so that our children will not have to pay so much money but if you feel would like to donate some money or sponsor a child then please let myself or Corps Treasurer Richard Bishop know.Amanda

Pause for thought

Advertisements in Salvationist remind us of the many Corps celebrating anniversaries this year. When I read of the 125th anniversary of Don-

caster Corps I just had a drop them the following letter, i.e. my testimony.

On a cold Sunday afternoon in November 1953, I spent some time in Doncaster doing a sketch of a local church. I was in the middle of my Na-tional service and was allowed to go once a week to a local art college. We were encouraged to prepare for our future lives after ‘demob’.

At about 5 PM (I kept a diary at the time) I walked over the main railway bridge of the town on my way back to the RAF camp. It was then that I noticed a building on the far side of the bridge with the logo “Salvation Army Doncaster” painted on the side facing me.

I remembered that a recent letter from my mother suggested that, if I was at a loss for somewhere to go on Sunday, why not look up the Salvation Army and go to one of their meetings? My mum and dad had recently started going to The Salvation Army in Peterborough.

So, there I was, with just enough money in my pocket from the bus fare to the camp and, maybe, a cup of tea before the half hour journey. So I said, “why not?” Unaware of meeting times, I found a warm cafe in the town centre and enjoyed my cup of tea. Then what a surprise when, at about 6 PM, a Salvation Army band began to play 50 yards from the cafe! I watched and listened with astonishment. Then, as they prepared to leave and march back to the Hall, I quickly rejoined the crowds in the street and followed the band.

I soon found myself in a warm, bright, crowded hall anticipating the com-mencement of the meeting about which I knew nothing. I just knew I was in a warm, welcoming place.

Two hours later I was on the bus back to the RAF camp saying to myself, “I really enjoyed that, how different it was to my occasional visits to the Church of England. I must go again next Sunday.”

I did go back and, to my surprise, kept going back. A couple of months

later I became aware of the reality of worship of the living God, and of a new direction that my life was taking. I gave my heart to God on March 14th, 1954 at the Mercy seat of the Doncaster Citadel Corps. I have never looked back since that wonderful day.
