Dear Readers,

Some of us are dreamers or visionaries; we ask, “what if...?”, we think outside the box, we may not even recognise a box. We need these people as much as we need the ones who can make sure all the

details get taken care of. It’s all part of working as a team – each person bringing their strengths and their ways of thinking, for the benefit of everyone.

But individually, as well as together, we all need to ask “what if...?” or “what would happen if...?” so that we can continue to grow into the like-ness of Jesus, and carry on the good work that God has planned for us to do. So here are a few of those kinds of questions for us to consider.

What would happen if...we did things without worrying which person got the credit?we read, inwardly digested and acted upon what we read in God’s word?we stopped grumbling and complaining and faultfinding?we actively looked for ways to build one another up, to encourage one another, and to enhance each other’s lives with acts of kindness?

Finally, the word of God:“Always do these things: show mercy to others, be kind, humble, gentle and patient. Get along with each other, and forgive each other. If someone does wrong to you, forgive that person because the Lord forgave you. Do all these things, but most important, love each other. Love is what holds you all together in perfect unity.” - Colossians 3:12-14 (NCV)

“Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be de-voted to one another in love. Honour one another above yourselves... Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be care-ful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” - Romans 12: 12-18 (NIV)

Shoe Box Scheme

To Major Mary, Captain Lynne and the lovely members of Southsea Citadel,

I would like to thank every single one of you for welcoming me into the Corps and making me feel at home and relaxed! Thanks you to all those who invited me into their homes and those that I got to chat to and become friends with. It may have only been a short time that I attended, however I feel I’ve got/made friends for life! Once again, thank you, and I hope to see you all in the near future.

Love Zoe x

Rotary International Shoebox Scheme for disadvantaged children in Albania, Montenegro, Tanzania, Moldova and the Philippines.

Please contact Major Les Green if you would like to help.

We have recently been able to send £2,000 to Mombasa. £950 to the Children’s Home and the same to Likoni School for Blind Children.

We sent £100 to Mombasa Corps. The money has arrived safely.

The Corps seems to be functioning well after the attack and destruction in Aug 2012. The Kenya Trust (in the UK) has replaced the band instruments, so the band is back in action. The situation at this time makes it impossi-ble to hold Open Air Meetings. They do live in a potentially volatile area.

Thanks to all who make regular support and to all who make ‘one-off’ donations. I’ve just been shopping in Palmerston Rd and come back with a £10 donation!

A young Kenyan met during the Big Collection was told of our link with the children. The next day he made his way to the hall with a sizeable do-nation for the Blind School. Along with other money received since send-ing the £2,000, we have made a good start towards our next donation.

Noah’s Ark Nursery

Hello from everyone at Noah’s Ark!We have had a great Summer and are looking forward to the Autumn term.

We have just had our first Ofsted and have received a “Good” rating which we are really pleased about, having only been open for seven months!

Our babyroom is full and we have a waiting list for this room. A lot of our visits are through recommendations from existing parents, which is good news.

Our 2-4 room us just over 3/4 full in the mornings and over 1/2 full in the afternoons. With the babies coming up over the next couple of months, we will be full most mornings.

At the end of the month, our outside area is being resurfaced with soft floor covering that will ensure there aren’t so many sore knees! We have been fortunate to have received some funding which will enable us to do this. Some additional funding has been made available to us and this is for resourcing the outside area, extending the babyroom and buying some equipment for I.T. purposes.

A big thank you to all those who collected Sainsbury’s vouchers. We have purchased a parachute and some equipment for the garden. The parents and children are also very excited about participating in Carols At The Kings and, with the letters only just gone out, we have received requests for over 60 tickets! We expect that number to rise considerably. [In fact, 167 have been ordered at time of printing!]

The children are also making some Harvest Baskets which will be displayed at our meeting on 6th October.Relationships are being built with the parents and staff and we pray that, with time, they will want to know more about the Church we belong to and the God we serve.

Thank you to those of you who continue to support us with your encouragement and prayers.

Mags and Amanda

CAMEO & The Shaws (+1)

Mary Goodchild 100

CAMEO Club, introduced by Major Joyce Dixon, enjoyed an afternoon of music, poetry and Bible reading by the Shaw

family – ‘plus one’.

Captain Lynne Shaw (AO) led with prayer, poetry and Bible reading with (left to right), Nathan, (vocals), Capt Lynne, husband Darren (piano), Isaac (percussion), Genevieve (vocal solos) with ‘Plus one’ at the back, Cohen Radcliffe (electric guitar/vocal solos).

Mrs. Mary Goodchild, in celebrating her 100th birthday, enjoyed a buffet lunch with her friends and members of the Corps.

Mary came to the Army at Southsea in 1993 through volunteering in the Corps Café.

She later joined a Corps Alpha course and commenced attending Sunday meetings. Mary became an Adherent in 1999 and was commissioned as a Soldier in 2001 continuing to work in the Café until age 95. She still attends Sunday meetings and the Home League of which she is a member. Mary is pictured with her close friends sharing her birthday card from H.M. the Queen.T.M.

Summer Season

Southsea Citadel Band and Songsters, have just concluded their summer season of open-air seafront meetings which ran each

Sunday from June until September.

The meetings have been successful and encouraging where many people passing by have heard the Gospel message, been contacted, and given ‘War Cry’ and ‘Kids Alive’. God was good in providing warm summer sunshine each week and the summer programme culminated in four people attending Sunday meetings. Glory be to God. T.M.

The young people ended the programme with a surprise ‘Happy Birthday’ musical and pictorial celebration for Mum, Captain Lynne. T.M.

The Big Concert

Raising £526 for the ‘BIG COLLECTION’ a concert featuring the Solent Male Voice Choir and Southsea Citadel Band provided

a well-received programme of music. The Band commenced with ‘Ein Feste Burg’. Other items included the marches ‘Praise’ and ‘Joyful News’ with contrasts of ‘In His Presence’ and ‘I’ll Walk With God’. The Choir sang many well-known Choral works including ‘Do You Hear the People Sing’, ‘Seventy Six Trombones’ and ‘Dry Bones’. A real Spiritual atmosphere was created with the Choir’s ‘Gwahoddiad’ (I am coming Lord To Thee) and ‘The Lily of the Valley’. ‘Kalinka’, with an exquisite tenor solo, proved a great favourite.

In an emphatic message, Darren Shaw, reading from Psalm 139, spoke of the omnipresence of God, surrounding us wherever we are. The Congregational songs of ‘Happy Day’ and ‘Thine is the Glory’ resounded around the well-filled hall. T.M.

Big Collection / Christmas Fayre

I am sure that most of us are familiar with the Chinese proverb, ‘Many hands make light work’!

Our BIG COLLECTION (formerly known as Annual Appeal) is now over for this year. Listen out for the announcement of our BIG COLLECTION total for 2013. (Last year’s total was £9113.44)

Many thanks to all of you who have contributed with standing days, door-to-door, money boxes and monetary donations. There have been many hours of dedicated collecting and I am most grateful for the support of everyone.

Another saying or proverb: All hands to the plough! Our CHRISTMAS FAYRE is again something we can all become involved in. Last year we raised the total of £1311.89 on the day, and much more with the Sale of Attractions still being sold thereafter. The ‘Attractions’ are the main fund-raiser, so come along with your cash and chequebooks! Get some bargains!

A few examples to whet your appetite: Family Day Pass for Butlins, Bognor Regis Team Sport Indoor Go-karting Family Ticket for Portsmouth Historic Dockyard Lucketts Travel Gift Vouchers

I have also received a donation of four Groupon Vouchers for and Open-Top Double Decker London Bus Tour and Thames Cruise - value £40 each. Any reasonable offer will be accepted. These expire on 30/10/13 so don’t hesitate - speak to Bandsman Darren Shaw if you are interested.

A ‘Wanted’ list will be placed on the noticeboard at the rear of the hall so you will know whom to make your contributions to in the form of goods or money. Now is the time to go through your house and give away last years’ unwanted Christmas gifts! (Make sure that the giver won’t be at the Fayre, though!) Also, good quality used items are needed.

Come along to our Community Rooms on Saturday 23rd November at 10:30am and enjoy all the fun of the Fayre. Tables are still available a hire price of £12.50.

All my work is for the Master. He is all my heart’s desire.

Service of Remembrance 2013

We have the pleasure once again of welcoming the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Portsmouth, Councillor Lynne Stagg

and Mrs Anne Taulbut, along with City Councillors, members of The Royal British Legion, Rotary, RAF and others. Children from St John’s College and Portsmouth High School will also be participating.

With so many guests taking the time and trouble to be present, we would ask that you talk this event up in your circle of influence and also, of course, come along yourself. Thankyou for all you will be doing.

Carols At The KingsThis is a great evangelical opportunity.... let’s all play our part by

using the opportunities open to us to encourage family, friends, neighbours, work colleagues to come along. We have already sent our mailing list of some 600, but we still need your help.

A4 posters are on the resource table - please take as many as you need to place in your window, work notice board, local shop etc etc. We also send 150 by post and deliver another 250/300, but we can’t have too many posters on display. What you do supports some very expensive advertising we also do around the town.

We want and need to fill every seat so that as many people as pos-sible are exposed to the Gospel and also ensure we cover our costs, which normally run at about £5,500. To date, we always make a good profit and, with your help and a little sponsorship, we shall do again this year. Please do your best. Sincere thanks, JB.

Invite your friends and family along for a relaxed, engaging evening with “Euph Fellowship” - a Euphonium Quartet specially formed

for the evening. There may even be some never-before-heard music (perhaps never to be heard again!?) and there will most definitely be plenty of Christmas tunes and a clear Christmas message.

There will, as Café Church regulars will know, be cakes and refresh-ments available throughout the evening and, to help our guests with their travel expenses, there will also be a retiring collection.

Christianity in BurmaThe Founder of Christianity in Burma (Myanmar)

Adoniram Judson Jr (Aug 9, 1788 - Apr 12, 1850, pictured right) was an

American Baptist Missionary who served in Burma for almost forty years. At the age of 25, Adoniram became the first missionary sent from North America to preach in Burma. The missionaries who came earlier did not remain very long, Judson is remembered as the first significant missionary in Burma.

Judson was born in 1788 in Malden, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. He was the son of a congregational minister, Adoniram Judson Sr, and his wife Abigail. He graduated from Brown University.

On September 19, 1811, Judson was appointed by the American Board of Commissioners as a foreign missionary to the East. The Judsons arrived in Calcutta on June 17, 1812, but the local Indian and British authorities did not want Americans evangelizing the Hindus in the area, so the group of missionaries separated and sought other mission fields. They were ordered out of India by the British East India Company, to whom American missionaries were even less welcome than British!

The following year, on July 13 1813, Judson moved to Burma. There was not one known Christian in that land of millions. After six long, soul-crushing, heart-breaking years, on June 27 1819, Judson baptised the first Burmese believer, Mang Nau. Within two years, he had 18 baptised converts and had started a Burmese Church.

He set a goal of translating the Bible and founding a church of 100 members before his death. On April 12, 1850, he died aged 61 on board ship in the Bay of Bengal and was buried at sea. When he died, he left the Bible which had been translated into Burmese, 100 churches and over 8000 believers.

In large part due to his influence, Myanmar has the third largest number of Baptists worldwide, behind the United States and India.

Myanmar is a Buddhist country, but 8% of the population is Christian. There is a thriving Christian Church in our country. This year is the 200th anniversary of Judson’s arrival in Burma, and there is to be a great celebration and thanksgiving. Many Christians will be coming from different parts of the world and Dar Dar and I will be privileged to attend.

Please pray for Burma.Sandar

As I write these words, we are still enjoying the end of what has been a glorious Summer. Today is sunshine and blue sky.

However, when the evening comes, so does the coolness of Autumn. The seasons move on.

A verse from the Songbook has been going through my head this week, making the point that seasons illustrate our entire life-cycle.

Through all the changing scenes of life, In trouble and in joy,The praises of my God shall stillMy heart and tongue employ.SASB 21

With my own troubles slowing me down, people often ask, ‘How are you?’ Just lately, I have used the word ‘maintained’. That is to say the good folk at the Hospital, plus my Doctor, do just that.

But of course the correct answer is to refer to the overall “changing scenes of life”. To put a full measure on our season! Life, we say, has a beginning and an end. Two tremendous events that many never think about in those terms - indeed, it is a while before the truth dawns on us that God gives us our first breath and then, finally, receives our last.

In the mean ‘enlightened’ time, let the praises of our God our hearts and tongues employ. In return, His presence and peace fill our every earth-day. I testify to that.

K.G.
