Dear Readers,Welcome to this Winter Edition of Citadel Scene. This time of year seems to

allow things old and new to blend seamlessly together. The Christmas Story is an ancient one, yet has fresh truth for us each year as we celebrate the advent of God’s gift in Christ - the new life that brings with it the promise of yet more new life.

Then, before we’ve cleared away the wrapping paper or thought about putting away the Christmas tree, the New Year arrives. It’s a time of looking back at what God has blessed us with (and we as a fellowship have so much to praise Him for) and lessons we have learned, but it’s also a time of anticipation, looking forward to what God will do in our lives in the coming days. I have no doubt that God has much in store for us in 2013. There are the obvious, planned projects like Noah’s Ark Nursery, Give to Grow and the new Friday night programme for the children, but God will also be active in the details and the subtleties of our lives. He has planned for our good and for the growth of His Kingdom in every way. My prayer is that we will trust Him enough to put ourselves completely in His hands.

May Jesus Christ, the Beginning and the End, be with us all this Christmas and into the coming year.

As Captain Lynne has said in her letter, God has great plans for Southsea Corps

in the days and years to come.

...we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Eph 2:10)

It is with this spirit of hope, faith and expectation that we have decided to engage in another ‘Planned Giving’ programme, now known as ‘Give to Grow’. This programme gives all of us the opportunity to maximise our financial support of God’s mission in Southsea. There’s no need to be nervous about this process as God knows your resources but, beyond that, He also knows your needs. To those who were giving money to support his mission, the Apostle Paul wrote this promise: ...my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. (Phil 4:19)

Launch Day will be Sunday 13th January, when each member of the Corps Family will receive a brochure which includes daily reading notes for your prayerful consideration before the Corps Dinner on Saturday 19th. 2015 Congress

It was a privilege to join with many others last week at The Booth Centre, on the occasion of Jean Stubbings’ retirement from active service. Jean

has served the division - at both Catherine Booth House and The Booth Centre - for 28 years, during which time she has overseen the transfer from the former CBH to the new building, and led and supported The Booth Centre during a time of critical transition. Members of staff and ser-vice users from both centres were supported by THQ and DHQ staff at the celebration meeting, which was followed by a lovely buffet lunch.

We wish Jean well and much blessing as she enters into a well-earned retirement. Graham Owen, Lt. Col.We as a Corps Fellowship would also pray for God’s blessing, direction and care for Jean as she enters a new sphere of life with all its possibilities and hopes. Ed

The O2 is located in the East End of London, an area that is historically significant to our Movement. The O2 Arena is London’s largest venue

and we would love to see it filled to capacity with Salvationists from around the world.

Additionally, the theme for the 2015 Congress will be - BOUNDLESS: The Whole World Redeeming. The theme verse is taken from Ephesians 3:8: ‘Preach to the nations the boundless riches of Christ.’

Beginning January 2013, the International website will add a link that will lead you to the Congress webpage where information about the event will be constantly added and updated. Registration will begin approximately 18 months before the Congress, with hotel and flight information approxi-mately 24 months in advance.

Salvationists and friends of the Army will want to begin praying now for, and planning to attend this historic celebration of the Sesquicentennial (150th Anniversary) of the founding of The Salvation Army in its very birth-place.

Kairos

Kairos is the name given to a programme which is running in various prisons. It is led by volunteers from all aspects of the Christian spectrum and aims to

show participants that there is life after prison, and endeavours to use Christian values and Biblical examples to portray the message.

Kairos is a Greek word which refers to ‘God’s Special Time’, although in Greek-speaking communities today it is used colloquially to mean ‘Summertime’ (which, after all is a time for new growth and development, and you can’t get more ‘special’ than that, can you?).

Whilst in Ireland recently I, along with Major Norma Paget and 14 Christian volunteers from the Irish community, led the first Kairos programme for ladies in HMP Hydebank Wood, Belfast. Throughout the intensive three-day programme there were discussions covering choices, friendship, churches, spirituality and study, to name but a few of the aspects necessary to make life worthwhile.

The ten participants arrived in a state of bewilderment and anxiety, not being sure what to expect or how the team members would react to them as they served their sentences, and yet they participated in all that took place. As the team ar-rived for the second day there was a marked difference. Most of their anxiety had disappeared and they took up the challenges that were laid before them in the programme. Space in Citadel Scene, along with the programme’s confidentiality code, prevents me from describing the days in great detail, suffice to say that dur-ing the final afternoon we had a new family of seeking Christians alongside us.

Derek had been invited to the closing session and was privileged to be asked to address the group and welcome them to the wider family of Christians. One could not help but reflect on the previous days when they had arrived with their anxieties. However, I will share with you some of their comments made through-out the weekend as they grew in confidence and, I believe, in faith.

‘We were not judged, just loved!’; ‘You re-lived your own pains of the past to help us with ours.’; ‘You helped us to start taking down the walls that we had built around ourselves.’; ‘We came out of curiosity...we saw Christ in you...we wanted what you had!’

The team ended the course as a group of tired ladies, yet filled with joy and praise to God as we saw all that He had done to bring transformation in our lives and in the lives of our new family. Your participation in the prayer-chain, which left the ladies totally stunned, was greatly appreciated and your prayers were answered. Thank you! G.E.S.

Service of Remembrance

The Service of Remembrance led by Captain Lynne Shaw (AO) and Major Mary Wolfe (CO) took place to a capacity congregation in the

presence of The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Portsmouth who both contributed readings. At the commencement of the service, The Corps Colour Sergeant led The Royal British Legion, R.N.L.I. and St. John Ambulance as they processed into the hall to present their Standards to Major Mary Wolfe.

Pupils from two local schools presented Thoughts of Remembrance – Don’t Worry, We Will Remember and Never Forget. The Singing Company sang Jesus Reigns, the Songsters contributed with He Sought Me and People Need The Lord.

The Band presented Coronation March; Processional-Shine On Us; Avé Verum and Sunset. Captain Lynne commented from Luke Chapter 4, that we follow Jesus and take His love to set the captive free. Bandsman Russell Morrison played the Last Post and Reveille. The Service concluded with light refreshment. T.M.

nity Manager Melvyn Thomas. The morning meeting commenced with the congregational song Holy, Holy, Holy followed by a season of personal prayer inspired by multi-media images. A prayer song followed with gen-

Community Sundayeral prayers led by Captain Elizabeth whose theme was ‘The good news about Jesus and our Community’ and in her message spoke of her ministry with the International Emergency Services, her service in Burma (Myan-mar) and during the Tsunami. Her message emphasised the great need of dignity in helping those in want and whom our Community serves. The Singing Company contributed with Cry Of My Heart and the Songsters with God and God Alone. The meeting concluded with the song ‘Except I am moved with compassion..’

Evening worship, which contained songs and readings chosen by mem-bers of the 50 strong Community Centre team commenced with Make Me A Blessing by the Band. A multi-media presentation took place of Chef Peter Collins’ parachute jump in which he raised funds for children in poverty through the Community Christmas parcel appeal. Melvyn spoke of the continuing achievements and goals reached by the Community pro-gramme, where Captain Elizabeth reminded us that Jesus shines out in all His glory and we must follow Him where He leads through our Commu-nity service. Jay, who began working in the Lighthouse Café in 2010 as a volunteer now attends Sunday meetings regularly and takes part in Corps activities. The Band contributed with the song setting Faithful God and the Songsters with You Are The Light. The day concluded with the congrega-tional song Abide With Me.

Mombasa

We were able to send £1,500 prior to our visit in October - £700 each to the Children’s Home & School for the Blind, and £100 to Mombasa Corps. I

was also able to take a further £45 to the children and was given £160 to take with me following the attack on the Corps.

Carole and I visited the Home and School as usual - both are doing well. The School has a brand new dormitory block built by teams from Ireland. 50 peo-ple came for a week and built the foundations, the second group of 50 built the walls, the next two groups put on the roof and did all the finishing inside - all completed in a month. The workers were Catholics.

The Likoni School Choir won a competition and then were invited to sing at the State House. They are making a CD and I hope to get copies.

Attack on Mombasa CorpsThis followed a Muslim Cleric being shot outside a nearby Mosque (approx dis-tance from Southsea Citadel to the Chemist.)

They broke into the compound. Just inside the gate they set a fire and completely demolished the ‘Home League Office’ which contained all their catering equip-ment, sewing machines, food, drinks, freezer etc. Next they stole all the band instruments, slashed the drums and burnt flags.

Moving on, they broke all the windows of the Officers’ Quarters and tried to break down the door. The ‘Mrs Major’, her teenaged daughter and three others (the younger daughter and two nieces, I think) escaped through a back window. They climbed on a wooden chair with an upturned plastic bucket on top. The wall was so high above that we (and they) do not know how they got over. There was broken glass on top of the wall to keep intruders out, so tow of them had deep cuts on their legs. Once over the wall, they were sheltered in the flat of one of their Muslim neighbours and hidden and fed for two days.

The Major tried to climb the wall in another part of the compound and, as he got a grip, a hand reached down to pull him over (another Muslim Neighbour). The mob did not get in the Quarters, but terrified them shouting, ‘Burn them!’

They moved on to the Hall. All the louvre windows which were all round the building were smashed. The platform and rostrum were destroyed and the sound system stolen. The Police then intervened and stopped major structural damage.

When we visited, all the platform had been replaced and they were fitting new windows to the Quarters and the Hall. They had received some money from the Army in the USA. They are just putting things right as they receive money. They were extremely pleased to receive the £160 I had been given for them just before I left Southsea .

All the Home League equipment would be very costly to replace apart from the building being gutted and the band instruments could not be replaced without help from overseas (which we hope will come). The Flags have been replaced by THQ Kenya.

Sunday meetings were as usual. Most of the people had returned in spite of being very afraid. There was a policewoman with a rifle at the gate as the government are paying for security for a time.

The Corps is in a Muslim area, they usually get on OK with neighbours, but anything could trigger trouble again. They are vulnerable, but Sunday School, meetings, all the groups and sections are back in business, apart from the Band of course, and at this time they could not hold open-air meetings. Please pray for them.

P.S. The orange stacking chairs Southsea paid for a few years ago are mostly OK, although some that were in the HL room and Band room have been destroyed.

Children’s WorkI just thought I would fill you in on a couple of things that have been happening

with the children’s work over the past couple of weeks and also what will be happening in January. After having a term of Monday Kids Club with only three children I sadly felt it was time to give it a break and finish it for the time being. However, from the beginning of January we will be starting a 3 week Friday night programme, this will include a junior club, Messy Church and a children’s choir (more details to follow). We are doing this in the hope of keeping some of the nine extra children who have been coming on a Friday night for singing at Carols at the Kings. Thank you for your ongoing prayers and support.

With Israel facing its biggest crisis since the 1950’s, God is shaking the nations once again. The nature of “shaking” is that it can happen

over a long period of time.

If I had to name God’s word for the decade it would be this:

“I will shake all nations, and the desired of all nations will come, andIwillfillthishousewithglory”.Haggai 2:6-7

In the case of the U.S.A. the shaking is mainly through natural disasters.With our own nation God is shaking the many once solid and trustworthy institutions, exposing unbelievable corruption and incompetence. The list is a long one, so I only mention the very latest at the time of writing: The BBC. The recession and banking crisis is shaking the whole of the European Union.

In the New Testament God’s word is even clearer when read against the backdrop of the incarnation of our Saviour Jesus Christ.

“Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.” Hebrews 12:26-28

How plainly God is removing that which can be shaken-so that which cannot be shaken may remain. For the New Year let us prepare ourselves for the Kingdom that cannot be shaken. K.G.
