City Manager’s Update

If you haven’t connected with the City on LinkedIn yet, now is

the time to do it. The Communications Office has worked

closely with the Department of Human Resources to upgrade

the City of Virginia Beach LinkedIn page and use it as a tool to

recruit qualified candidates to fill position vacancies.

The LinkedIn page now serves a space to promote the City’s

Human Resources brand, “Careers. Community.

Connections.” and provides insight into the organization through regular news updates. Human

Resources, along with several other departments, invested in LinkedIn Talent Solutions to

advertise job opportunities on the site. They are pushed into the LinkedIn network to reach

potential candidates in the appropriate fields.

Activity on the page has ramped up over the last several months. The page has seen a 26%

increase in followers since these improvements were implemented, and more enhancements are

planned. Staff video testimonials and original thought leadership content are in the works, so

check back often.

If you’re already a LinkedIn member, take a moment to visit the page and click the FOLLOW

button, and share the page with friends. If you’re not currently on LinkedIn, creating a profile is

free and simple to do. The site can prompt you to input your job history, education, professional

organizations and any other career-related information.

Cynthia Whitbred-Spanoulis will be interim director of the

Department of Aquarium and Museums, following Lynn Clements’

retirement at the end of August. Cynthia has been with the City for 21

years and has served as deputy director of the Virginia Aquarium &

Marine Science Center and City of Virginia Beach History Museums since

2012. We will conduct a national search for a permanent director.

The City’s Communications Office took home two Silver Circle Awards from the City-

County Communications and Marketing (3CMA) conference last week. One award, in the

category of Published Multi-Images, recognized the City’s Flickr Page. The judges noted,

“Supremely well-organized page, with attractive album covers and descriptions. The talented

photographer captured an extensive array of images that depict a vibrant community. Virginia

Beach has clearly used the photos to positively engage the community. Overall – a winner!” The

City’s page features more than 10,000 photographs City photographer Craig McClure has

taken and curated on a site that has attracted more than three million views.

The second award was for Social Media – Best Use of Facebook (Population – 86,000 and

Up) which recognized the City’s use of the platform during severe weather events, including

Hurricane Matthew, Tropical Storm Julia and Winter Storm Helena. With Facebook’s new

algorithms, typical organic post reach is 2,000-4,000, however, during Winter Storm Helena,

organic reach peaked at more than 60,000. During Tropical Storm Julia/Hurricane Matthew, it

peaked at nearly 377,000. Local news outlets posted and shared the city’s Facebook posts,

pushing reach even further with a single post to the local ABC affiliate’s Facebook page

garnering 757 reactions, 106 comments and more than 1,500 shares.

The judges said, “Entry shows significant research into demographics aimed to grab audience’s

attention. This approach effectively gives the City a key standing in the community, enabling it

to stand out as the #1 resource in emergencies. This entry clearly understand their target audience

and found a creative and humorous way to

capture their attention and gain more followers.

This was a strategic and smart move. More

followers mean a wider reach when critical

information needs to be disseminated. They may

not have created the “meme” but they sure found

a way to make it work for them. Great use of

Facebook!”

Law enforcement officers throughout the region were recognized

on Aug. 31for their efforts in traffic safety programs and DUI

enforcement over the past year at a ceremony hosted by the

Southside Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and the

Chesapeake Bay Alcohol Safety Action Program (ASAP). Four

officers from the Virginia Beach Police Department received

honors: Officer Caleb Fields (Fourth Precinct), MPO Nathaniel Worthing (Second Precinct),

Officer John Dolida (Special Operations Fatal Accident Crash Team) and MPO Shaun

Gayhart (Special Operations

Traffic Safety Unit).

MADD and ASAP presented

awards to officers with the best DUI

enforcement statistics, and/or best

traffic safety programs targeting

intoxicated drivers within their

respective agencies.

A free class will provide participants with the opportunity to learn skills necessary to help

someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The

Human Services Department’s Behavioral Health and Wellness Prevention Services Unit is

offering the training for those interested in Adult Mental Health First Aid. The course uses

role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to recognize and respond to warning signs of

specific illnesses.

The class will take place Wednesday, Sept. 27, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Pembroke 4, Suite 120

(291 Independence Boulevard). Class size is limited to 15 participants and will be available on a

first-come basis. To register, contact Sabrina Pugh at (757) 385-0827 by 5 p.m., Sept. 23.

The Historic Preservation Commission’s general meeting agenda on Sept. 6 included the Princess

Anne County Confederate Monument as a discussion item. To accommodate the considerable

community and media interest on this issue, the Commission held their meeting at the Virginia Beach

Convention Center. Approximately 100 people, including Councilmembers Rosemary Wilson

(Commission liaison) and Jim Wood, attended the meeting and 42 of them took the opportunity to

comment on the monument. Those attending were respectful to all speakers and the Commission

gathered useful public opinion. The civil atmosphere was a credit to Virginia Beach citizens and the

meeting preparation by Commission members, Convention Center staff, and the Planning and Police

departments. The Commission will provide a recommendation to the City Council on this issue after

reviewing the public input.

Mayor Sessoms, Economic Development Director Warren

Harris, along with team members Jerry Stewart and Michelle

Chapleau, had the unique opportunity to meet for the first time

in Virginia Beach with nearly 30 shareholders of Hermes

Abrasives. Travelling from Germany and other parts of Europe,

the shareholders came to the city to tour the Hermes location on

Viking Drive. The company manufactures high-quality

industrial abrasives that are utilized in the aerospace, board,

metalworking, automotive and precision grinding industries at

its present facility, which was first selected in 1978.

The Department of Economic Development was responsible for the initial recruitment of

Hermes to the city and has assisted the company with several expansions over the years. Hermes

was founded in Hamburg, Germany in 1927 and is still under private ownership, consisting of

several generations of a few families. The company employs 160 people in Virginia Beach.

Hermes distributes its products throughout North America and exports to Europe and China.

Hermes Group CEO Dr. Jan Cord Becker (back) and his father, Mr. Gunter Becker, a second-generation founder (front), meet with Mayor Sessoms.

Military Times recently ranked Virginia Beach as the second best place to live

amongst 79 other large cities with populations of 200,000 or more. Data from

multiple sources was used to compare factors such as veteran/military culture and

services, economic indicators, and livability factors such as cost of living and

employment. To see the complete list and ranking, visit www.militarytimes.com.

Tuesday morning, a resident called 911 to report an owl in distress, hanging upside down from the

limb of a tall tree. Engine 19 responded to the scene and requested assistance from Ladder 10

because the owl was suspended high in the tree. Captain Max Gonano used a 35-foot extension

ladder to get close enough to the owl, which was entangled in webbing. He freed it from the webbing

and carried it down to a wildlife expert and Virginia Beach Animal Control Officer waiting on the

ground. The owl was taken to a shelter for treatment. It is expected to be returned to the wild.
