GROUND BREAKING CEREMONY COUNTY’S NEWEST “NET ZERO”

ENERGY HOME IN MOUNT RAINIER!

The Mayor and Council joined, the Redevelopment Authority of Prince George's County (RDA), along with its partners Urban Green, LLC, Monument Bank, and the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development on November 7, 2015, to break ground for the County’s newest net zero energy (NZE) house at 3719 – 34th Street in Mt. Rainier, Maryland. This modern, energy efficient single family home will produce as much energy on an annual basis as it consumes leaving the homeowners with a utility bill of zero. The NZE home demonstrates that it’s a profitable product for any commercial homebuilder/developer to reproduce throughout the County.

The RDA intends to develop other NZE homes in Capitol Heights and Fairmount Heights, MD. “The NetZero technology helps to solidify Mount Rainier as a sustainable community and builds upon the City reducing their carbon footprint along with lower energy bills for our residents,” said Mt. Rainier Mayor Malinda Miles.

Strengthening businesses, Stimulating new investments in Mount Rainier’s Town Center The City of Mount Rainier was awarded a grant from Maryland's Department of Housing and Community Development, Community Legacy Program to support the development of the Town Center Business Attraction and Expansion Program (TCBAEP) for exterior and interior building improvements in Mount Rainier's Mixed-Use Town Center (M-U TC) zone. The goal of the Town Center Business Attraction and Expansion Program(TCBAEP) is

to support the City’s economic development goals to cultivate high-quality retail businesses in Mount Rainier’s Mixed-Use Town Center (M-U TC) zone. All businesses* located within the M-U TC zone are eligible to apply. New businesses are also eligible.* Some restrictions apply. The M-U TC Zone consist of licensed commercial businesses located on 34 Street and Rhode Island Avenue (Route One Corridor) in Mount Rainier, MD. Please visit the city website for more information or email [email protected]. More Development coming to Mount Rainier’s Town Center

How to Green your Holiday! Gifts Buy Local – a great source is the Mount Rainier

Annual Craft Fair at Joe’s Movement Emporium on December 5, 2015 10 am—5 pm.

Donate to a favorite charity in their name. Many charities offer holiday gift programs.

Send eCards instead of paper cards, or choose cards made out of recycled materials.

Give “experience” or “service” gifts: a spa treatment, a music lesson, babysitting or pet care, restaurant gift cards, tickets to concerts or sporting events, gift cards to local businesses

Wrap your gifts in recycled paper. You can also use plain brown paper (even brown bags from the grocery store!) and decorate it using stamps, ribbons, stickers, etc.

Give baked goods or other food items, or put together your recipes and give a personalized cookbook.

Avoid gifts that require batteries – about 40% of all battery sales take place during the holiday season! Batteries present an environmental hazard when they wind up in our landfills.

You can wrap gifts or make holiday cards using

kids’ artwork, old calendars, maps, posters, scarves, fabric, newspaper, etc.

Decorations LED holiday lights consume about 90% less

energy than incandescent lights! They also last longer and cost less to operate.

Put your lights on a timer to ensure they’re only on when you can enjoy them.

Light up the holiday with soy or beeswax candles instead of petroleum-based ones.

For the deepest green, get solar powered LED lights for outside your home.

Food & Guests Feature locally sourced, organic, vegetable-based

meals at your holiday table. If you choose to include meat, look for free-range, organic options.

Make sure guests know where your recycling and compost bins are, and what should go in them!

Instead of buying disposable plates and cutlery, consider borrowing dishes from friends.

SNOW ADVISORY It’s that time of year when residents should be attuned to weather alerts and when listening to be advised of the buzzwords and what they really mean:

Freezing rain – rain that freezes when it hits the ground, creating a coating of ice on roads and walkways.

Hail – rain that turns to ice while suspended and tossed in the air from violent updrafts in a thunderstorm.

Sleet – rain that turns to ice pellets before reaching the ground.

Winter Weather Advisory – cold, ice and snow are expected.

Winter Storm Watch – severe winter weather such as heavy snow or ice is possible within a day or two.

Winter Storm Warning – severe weather conditions have begun or are about to begin.

Blizzard Warning – heavy snow and strong winds producing blinding snow (near zero visibility) and life threatening wind chills for three hours or longer.

Frost/freeze Warning – below freezing temperatures are expected.

When weather conditions warrants the declaration of a snow emergency the City of Mount Rainier follows the District of Columbia, not Maryland or Prince George’s County. The City Manager may declare an emergency independent of other jurisdictions when conditions in the City warrant a special declaration. Tune in to your local news, website and list serve for closures and other information.

The Mount Rainier Police Department will notify residents of snow emergency declarations and other winter weather information via Twitter feed. Simply follow @MRPDChief on Twitter to get the latest. The Police will also post critical updates on the Chief’s Blog at: www.mrpdchief.blogspot.com Mount Rainier City government closings will be announced on WUSA’s 9 News Now (www.wusa.com) and Fox 5. It will also be posted on cable/web. When a snow emergency is declared, parking along these streets is automatically prohibited for the duration of the snow emergency:

34th Street from Eastern Avenue to Arundel Road;

Chillum Road from Arundel Road to the City boundary at Queens Chapel Road (MD Rt. 500);

Rainier Avenue from 34th Street to Upshur Street;

Upshur Street from Rainier Avenue to 28th Place;

28th Place from Upshur Street to Russell Avenue;

Russell Avenue from 28th Place to Arundel Road;

Varnum Street from Russell Avenue to Eastern Avenue;

Arundel Road from Russell Avenue to 34th Street

Vehicles found parked on a snow emergency route during or after a snow emergency has been declared by the City to be subject to a $100 fine (City Code §13A-107) and to being impounded at the owner’s risk and expense. The Mount Rainier Police Department wishes you a safe, happy season!

What’s Brewing? Like a tea kettle, Mount

Rainier is brewing with activity. This translates to economic growth, jobs, amenities and development with many projects.

Simmering are projects that consist of over 250 new residential units, restaurants, businesses and street improvements. They highlight the many attributes within our Sustainable goals. These goals have defined the guiding principles that recently resulted in the City of Mount Rainier receiving the Champion award for the highest number of points in the recent re-certification of Sustainable Maryland. This award is given to municipalities throughout the State of Maryland that continue to strive towards sustainable practices.

Through the help of our Green Team, Tree Commission, MUTC, Bike Co-op, Community Toolshed , Design Review Board and the entire community we strive towards these efforts together. We also have to thank our awesome city council, staff and others working on our Architectural Overlay Zone to keep our cool, quirky, cottage style and art infused homes in tact. We will continue to strive towards keeping things brewing in our City and want to wish you and your family a wonderful and joyous Holiday!

Mayor Malinda Miles
