The City of York Safeguarding Children Partnership (CYSCP) offers a variety of multi-agency training courses
for practitioners and volunteers who work with children, young people and their families in the City of
York.
Details are provided of both online training and face to face training.
All courses are free.

The City of York Safeguarding Children Partnership offers a free City of York Safeguarding Children
Awareness E-learning course.
Course Aim This course gives a basic awareness in safeguarding children and young people in York. Who is this course for? It is aimed at individuals in organisations and voluntary groups who work with children and young people, families or adults who may be parents and/or carers, in York. The content of this course is only relevant to those people working within City of York safeguarding procedures and processes. Learning objectives After completing the course you will:
o Be able to identify the signs and indicators of possible abuse and neglect
o Be able to explain and demonstrate what to do if:
a child or young person makes a disclosure to you
you have a concern about a child or young person or about someone who works with children and young people
o Be able to explain how to make a referral to Children's Social Care in York

Face to Face training
CYSCP commissions multi-agency training for practitioners and volunteers who work with children, young
people and their families with the City of York.
All courses are free of charge.
The following pages provide details on each of the courses available including the course aim, learning
objectives and pre-requisite learning.

Multi-agency training allows staff from different organisations to learn together and strengthens understanding amongst partners. To achieve a good multi-agency mix at each session, it would be helpful, where an organisation may have numerous staff wanting to attend a course, if attendance could be spread across a number of sessions.

Safeguarding Children – Working Together A
Duration: 9:30- 16:30
Course Aim
To develop an understanding and awareness of abuse and neglect of children and young people and
provide the knowledge and ability to act effectively on concerns about children and young people.
Target Audience
Any member of the workforce including volunteers who work regularly with children and young people
directly or indirectly.
This course is a refreshed version of the previous course Working Together – 1 Day Multi-Agency training.
Learning Outcomes
• An overview and understanding of the legislative frameworks and guidance in safeguarding
children and young people
• A greater awareness of type of abuse and neglect which children and young people may experience
and its impact and how to recognise the signs and indicators.
• A clear understanding of what to do if someone has concerns about a child in York or a child makes
a disclosure and the processes involved.
• An improved knowledge about the roles and responsibilities of individuals, organisations and City
of York Safeguarding Children Partnership, including identifying, reporting, recording, sharing information.

Shared Responsibilities and Procedures to Safeguard Children – Working
Together B
Duration: 9:30- 16:30
Course Aim
To develop knowledge, skills and abilities to strengthen effective multi-agency working in York to safeguard
and promote the welfare of children and young people.
Target Audience
Practitioners and volunteers, in York, who regularly work with children and young people directly or
indirectly and have particular responsibilities for safeguarding children.
Course Outcomes
• A shared understanding of roles and responsibilities both nationally and the local arrangements in
York for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
• An increased awareness of the legal basis of safeguarding and child protection processes.
• An improved understanding of the local protocols and procedures including inter-agency
frameworks and assessment processes for York.
• A developed understanding of information sharing within a safeguarding multi-agency context.
• Further developed skills in effective multi-agency working and collaboration with partners,
including meaningful engagement with children, families and professionals.
• An enhanced ability to contribute in multi-agency safeguarding meetings and processes such as
child protection conferences, core groups etc
• An overview of the role and remit of City of York Safeguarding Children Partnership.
Pre-Requisite Learning - This course provides a progression from the Safeguarding Children – Working
Together A course which delegates must already have attended (or previous course Working Together – 1
Day Multi-Agency training)

Awareness of Neglect in Children and Young People
Duration: 9:30- 16:30
Course Aim
To provide a basic understanding and awareness of neglect, including adolescent neglect and highlight the
importance of early intervention and effective multi-agency working practices in securing better outcomes
for children and young people.
Target Audience
Practitioners and volunteers, in York, who regularly work with children and young people directly or
indirectly and have particular responsibilities for safeguarding children.
Course Outcomes
• A good awareness of the signs and indicators of neglect including adolescent neglect
• An improved understanding of the impact of neglect on children and young people
• An appreciation of the significance of early intervention in neglect cases
• Opportunities to explore effective ways of multi-agency working in neglect cases
• Awareness of some of the key findings from national and local Serious Case Reviews in regard to
neglect.

Participants are expected to have already undertaken the City of York Safeguarding Children Awareness E-
learning Course (or the previous version of this course-Online Safeguarding Basic Awareness) and the
Safeguarding Children – Working Together A (or equivalent e.g. previous Working Together 1 Day Multi-
Agency Training.)

Safeguarding Disabled Children
Duration: 9:30- 16:30
Course Aim
To increase practitioners’ understanding and confidence in the specific issues involved in safeguarding
children and young people with disabilities and improve skills in responding to their safeguarding needs.
Target Audience
Practitioners and volunteers, in York, who regularly work with children and young people directly or
indirectly and have particular responsibilities for safeguarding children.
Course Outcomes
• An improved awareness of the increased vulnerabilities of children and young people with
disabilities
• A greater understanding of the thresholds for intervention for disabled children
• An increased knowledge of the potential barriers of communication in working with children and
young people with disabilities
• An opportunity to explore how to work more effectively in a multi-agency context to secure the
best outcomes for the child or young person.

Participants are expected to have already undertaken the City of York Safeguarding Children Awareness E-
learning Course (or the previous version of this course-Online Safeguarding Basic Awareness) and the
Safeguarding Children – Working Together A (or equivalent e.g. previous Working Together 1 Day Multi-

Understanding Domestic Abuse and Children
Duration: 9:30- 16:30
Course Aim
To understand the impact of domestic abuse on children and young people and to increase the knowledge
and capacity of practitioners to intervene effectively to improve outcomes for children and young people.
Target Audience
Practitioners and volunteers, in York, who regularly work with children and young people directly or
indirectly and have particular responsibilities for safeguarding children.
Course Outcomes
• An overview and understanding of all types of domestic abuse, how it can occur and how to
recognise signs.
• An enhanced understanding of the impact of domestic abuse on children’s wellbeing and safety
and how domestic abuse impacts on parenting capacity.
• A greater knowledge of legislation, guidance and procedures in relation to domestic abuse.
• An improved capacity to respond to and intervene in domestic abuse situations, including
managing risk and using risk assessment tools.
• An enhanced ability to work effectively within a multi-agency context, with a focus on a child
centred approach.
Pre-Requisite Learning
Participants are expected to have already undertaken the City of York Safeguarding Children Awareness E-
learning Course (or the previous version of this course-Online Safeguarding Basic Awareness) and the
Safeguarding Children – Working Together A (or equivalent e.g. previous Working Together 1 Day Multi-
Agency Training). It would also be useful for participants to have completed the free basic awareness
domestic abuse online training available via IDAS.

Understanding Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation
Duration: 9:30- 16:30
Course Aim
To increase awareness and understanding of child sexual abuse, including child sexual exploitation, its
impact on children and young people and develop effective ways of communicating with children and
young people who have suffered or are at risk of abuse.
Target Audience
Practitioners and volunteers, in York, who regularly work with children and young people directly or
indirectly and have particular responsibilities for safeguarding children.
Course Outcomes
• A greater understanding of what constitutes sexual abuse including child sexual exploitation
• An increased knowledge of the impact of sexual abuse and exploitation on children and young
people
• A focus on developing skills in listening and communicating with children and young people about
sexual abuse and exploitation including disclosure.
• An opportunity to explore how to work more effectively in a multi-agency context to secure the
best outcomes for the child or young person.

Participants are expected to have already undertaken the City of York Safeguarding Children Awareness E-
learning Course (or the previous version of this course-Online Safeguarding Basic Awareness) and the
Safeguarding Children – Working Together A (or equivalent e.g. previous Working Together 1 Day Multi-

Introduction to Child Protection Conferences and Core Groups
Duration: 9:30-13:00
Course Aim
To improve understanding and skills in working together to protect children and young people through
Child Protection Conferences, Child Protection Plans and Core Groups
Target Audience
Practitioners and volunteers, in York, who regularly work with children and young people directly or
indirectly and have particular responsibilities for safeguarding children and who anticipate being invited to
attend Child Protection Conferences or core group meetings as part of their work.
Course Outcomes
• A greater knowledge and understanding of the purpose and structure of child protection
conferences and core groups.
• A clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities within child protection conferences and
core groups
• Increased understanding and confidence in participating effectively in child protection conferences,
plans and core groups

Staff groups* - based on those described in Working Together to Safeguard Children 2010 *All health staff should refer to their own organisations training strategy/policy. Group 1
Staff in infrequent contact with children, young people and/or parents/carers who may become aware of possible abuse or neglect. For example, librarians, community advice centre staff, groundsmen, recreation assistants, environmental health officers.
Group 4
Members of the workforce who have particular responsibilities in relation to undertaking section 47 enquiries, including professionals from education, police and children’s social care; those who work with complex cases and social work staff responsible for co-ordinating assessments of children in need.
Group 2
Those in regular contact or have a period of intense but irregular contact, with children, young people and/or parents/carers including, who may be in a position to identify concerns about maltreatment, including those that may arise from the use of the Common Assessment Framework. For example, housing, Youth Offending Teams and staff in secure settings, the police other than those in specialist child protection roles, sports development officers, disability specialists, faith groups, community youth groups, play scheme volunteers.

Professional safeguarding children advisors, named and designated lead professionals
