The Khayelitsha Wheelchair Tennis Clubis growing day by day despite the attend-

ant challenges they face daily.But three of its members are now in sev-

enthheavenafter beingannouncedas repre-sentatives of the province at the GautengOpen next month.Benito Vuma, Siyabulela Mahlinihla and

Mayenzeke Gwija battled their way intoqualifying for the tournament to run be-tween 8 to 12 April.“This is not the first time that we have

made it to the tournament, and althoughwehaven’t fared in the past, we are very confi-dent this time around.I have made it to the final 16 and Mayen-

zeke made it to the final four previously butwehavebeen traininghard andwehope thatwe can go even further this time around,”said Vuma.The clubhas around 20members fromvar-

ious townships, with some from as far asStrand. They hold training sessions at theMandela Park Stadium on Mondays,Wednesdays and Saturdays.Vuma, 34, said that since its launch last

year the club has seen a growing interestfrom disabled members of the community.“More and more people are joining the

team with the eldest member being in hisforties and we also have young boy of 16years old,” he explained.One of the key players in the team,Mayen-

zeke Gwija is confident of a good showing atthe competition.“The highest I have ever achieved in na-

tional tournament is a semi final spot andI have been training really hard. I have re-cently won two 10km races and this hasmade me believe that if I put my mind to it,I can really achieve,” he said.While theupbeatmoodgives an indication

of future success of the school the membersare facing difficult challenges.“Weneed support not just that of the sport-

ing community but that of residents as awhole.When we stage events very few people

come to watch,” said Gwija.What makes it even worse for this group

is that even familymembers fail to showsup-port.“My very own family have never watched

me play. This is despite me having startedplaying tennis in 2009. It hurts when you are

in a tournament and the only support youhave is fromyour teammates,” he explained.Families must support disable members

who play sport because it does wonders fortheirmoral, he added. Another problem that

the team faces is that members struggle tomake at training on a regular basis becauseof lack of transport for the disabled. Gwijaalso encouraged local business to supportthe team as it was struggling financially.

Somewhere along the way you are goingto get old. And you are going to get tired.You are not going to be as fast as you

used to be. You are going to be an oldtoppie. And only memories will remain.What makes me to say this? Recently Iwas in a meeting of independent writers.And I sat next to a spouse of a prospec-

tive writer. He wants to write his mem-oirs. I asked why. He was vague. Butapparently he was in exile. Not so longago I finished reading Berry Gilder’s“Songs and Secrets.”And why not, this year is my year of

reading. And Gilder’s book is about exileand the land they wanted to create. Didthey create it? I am not so sure. It is noteasy to create utopia.

You may want it but you may not getit. Well, there are some writers that arecareful. They are not going to tilt a table.They are going to leave it as it is. Andwhat are they going to write about, Iwonder?I noticed this when I touched a nerve. I

asked whether his book was going to becritical. He sounded offended. “Critical?”he said. Well, sometimes you do not talkto such people.You leave them alone. That is what I

realized, especially when the spousepounced on me. She said something thatfelt like s sucker punch. She said thesedays you don’t beg. This is your country.You just take. Eish, sonny, you feel likeducking. I wonder whether the era ofthinking is gone. I hope not. I wonderwhether the era of dreaming has passed.I hope not. If we are going to take, weare not going to put. We’ve got to put.We’ve got to create beautiful things. Whois the son that shines? The son thatshines is the one that has bruises. He isthe one that was not tempted to take. Butplayed by the rules. I tell you we’ve gotto play it smart. We’ve got to show theworld that we can do it – we have style.People like people that have style- that take their time to do things. But

do them. They don’t like takers. Staypositive.

Medics robbed saving a lifeThree paramedics were held at gunpoint inthe early hours of Wednesday morningwhile trying to save the life of a five-year-oldgirl.Shortly after midnight, an ER24 ambu-

lance and rapid response vehicle was dis-patched to a house in Khayelitsha for a five-year-old girl suffering from seizures. Theparamedics were busy in the ambulance sta-bilising the little girl when one of the doorsflung open and a gun pointed at them.The mother of the five year old was also

in the ambulance at the time of the incident.According to the paramedics two sus-

pects, believed to be in their twenties, de-manded cellphones and wallets. One of the

suspects asked for the rapid response vehi-cle’s key.While the paramedics were held atgunpoint in the ambulance, the second sus-pect went to the rapid response vehicle withthe key. It is believed that he used the keyto open the vehicle, which was locked at thetime, instead of the remote, which causedthe emergency sirens to be activated.Both suspects immediately fled the scene.

They got away with cellphones and a GPSfrom the ambulance.Paramedics continued their care for the

little girl and transportedher toKhayelitshaDistrict Hospital. A case of armed robberywas opened at the Khayelitsha Police Sta-tion. -ER24

Performing at the ArtsCape Theatre hasproven to be a life-changing experience forFive learners from Chris Hani SecondarySchool.

They were invited to perform at the WorldChildren’s Prize (WCP) ceremony.

World Children’s Prize, which is alsoknown as Children’s Nobel Prize, attractsmillions of children from all over the worldwho are asked to cast votes for their chil-dren’s rights heroes every year.

The learners are Busisiwe Maswana, No-luthando Rhatiya, Ntombi Gina, SinawoMatshini and Amanda Ntamo.

This year’s winner will be voted for inApril.

Madoda Mahlutshana, the school princi-pal, said learners from his school were the“main attraction” for the production andperformance in the ceremony.

The learners performed drama and dancenumbers.

Mahlutshana said the ceremony was goodas it tackleds issues that affect children suchas child trafficking, child labour, generalhuman rights and other issues and that it al-so makes them more aware of their rights.

“It helps them a lot as it makes them moreknowledgeable about their rights. It also de-velops them on their personal level and also

builds them as leaders. They also learnabout the challenges faced by their peers inother countries,” he said.

Vusi Mahlasela, world renowned musi-cian performed.

Also on the stage was Patricia de Lille,Executive Mayor of City of Cape Town andMalala Yousafzai, from Pakistan who is lastyear’s winner of the prize and other interna-tional dignitaries.

The first winner of the WCP was Iqbal

Masih, from Pakistan, in 2000.Masih was sold as a child slave at the age

of five to repay loan his parents owed to localcarpet factory owner, in 1983,

Winners of the prize get the sum of $100000 which they chose how they will use.

Learners from Chris Hani High Schoolwere also lucky enough to fly to Swedenwhere they performed at last year’s officialaward ceremony..

Police are basking in success aft-er making a 300kg dagga bust inKhayelitsha on Wednesdaymorning.The discovery took place after

a tip off from the community, ac-cording to Harare police spokes-person Lieutenant SiyabulelaVukubi.“The Western Cape flying

squadmemberswere conductingvehicle patrols in 40 block,Gqwirha Street, in Makhaza inthe early hours.They were stopped by a resi-

dent who informed them aboutdagga that is being sold at a par-ticular address. Police reactedquickly and searched the house,”he explained.

He said that dagga whichweighed 320kg was found at thelocked shack attached to thehouse.“Three occupants of the house

aged between 18 and 54 were ar-rested for possession of dagga.They are expected to appear inKhayelitshaMagistrate Court to-day 19 March,” he said.“Weare gratefulwith themem-

bers of the community who blowthe whistle on illegal activitiesthat are practised in our commu-nities.We therefore encourage the

community to contact their near-est police station or flag down thepolice vehicle that patrols the ar-ea for any information.All information received will

The newly elected Harare Community Po-licing Forum has vowed to strengthen therelations between the residents and police.

This was driven home by the chairpersonRonnie Busakwe who will be seating for thesecond term.

“As you may be aware that vigilantism isstill a major problem in our communitiesand we will continue to work hard to fightagainst.

We understand that residents can get im-patient with the police and the justice sys-tem but mob justice is not the solution,” hesaid.

The elected members are as follows Noliz-wi Ngcana (secretary), Ronnie Busakwe(chairperson), Funeka Soldaat (project co-ordinator), Thembelani Jikelo (public rela-tions officer), Nodumo Khuthuka (deputychairperson), Sylvia Lipema (additionalmember), Vuyani Maphuma (additionalmember), Andiswa Ngcani (treasurer) andSgt Sheila Koegelenberg (deputy secretary).

Busakwe said that one of the key duties

of the community was to connect the com-munity to the police.

“We want residents to contact us whenthey do not receive the required assistancefrom the police station. We want them to un-derstand how the system works so that theyknow which steps to follow,” he says.

Busakwe said that the forum has alreadyembarked on campaigns to assist the com-munity such as the back to school projectwhere they ensure learner safety, sportsdays and community engagement imbizo’s.

He added that one of their biggest concernand focusareawas the lackof trust that resi-dents have towards the police.

One of the major problems in Khayelitshawas homophobia which manifested itself inthe brutal attacks of lesbian women in thepast.

The hostility prompted gender rights ac-tivist Funeka Soldaat to seek more involve-ment in community structures such as theforum.

She was elected as the project coordina-tor and has been working in the forum sincelast year.

The launch of The Barn business incubatorhub in Khayelitsha has been hailed as thebeginning of a new era in business opportu-nities for local entrepreneurs.

The Barn was launched last Wednesdayat the Look Out Hill venue.

Ian Merrington CEO of Cape Innovationand Technology Initiative (CiTi) said con-cept of the The Barn would not have beenpossible without the community’s involve-ment and feedback,.

“Our goal for the future is to take thismod-el and roll it out to other communities acrossSouth Africa.

Each community faces its own challenges,and needs solutions that are unique to thatcommunity.

Thus, the community-led incubator is theideal vehicle for change in the economy.”

The dream of playing football at the highestlevel continues to live on for the 2015 Ned-bank Ke Yona Team captain, Sydney Masa-na. The Nedbank Ke Yona Team Search hasbeen on an extensive search for South Afri-ca’s next football heroes for the past threeyears and has unearthed some exciting tal-ent that now features in some of the PremierSoccer League and National First Divisionsides.

One of the stars that were discovered byNedbank is 24-year-old Sydney Masana whois now a key member of Kinnah Phiri’ssquad after being signed by Free State starson a two year contract.

Masana was part of the 30 000 young SouthAfrican men from all parts of South Africathat took a step of making their dreams hap-pen by entering the Nedbank Ke Yona TeamSearch.

The bulky forward from Nyanga Town-ship in Cape Town now commands a regularstarting position in the highly competitiveFree State Stars squad. Masana gave a ster-ling performance when he made his first ap-pearance at a professional cup competitionduring the Nedbank Cup round of 32 againstBidvest Wits.

Even though Masana’s team bowed outof Africa’s most lucrative cup competition,the former Ke Yona captain continues to bein fine form for his club. The former Ke Yona

captain continues to work hard and hasbeen one of Free State Stars’ most instru-mental players.

“It still feels like a dream that I am playingfootball at the highest level with one of thebiggest clubs in the country. I believe I havebeen doing quite well for my team this yearbut I still believe that I should continueworking hard. To this day, I thank the Ned-bank Ke Yona team search for the opportu-nity that it presented to me as a young aspir-ing footballer,” says Masana.

Nedbank’s senior communication manag-er, Nkosinathi Msiza believes that the Ned-bank Ke Yona Team Search is one of manyways in which Nedbank continues to be anenabler in the communities that it serves.

Beautiful race kicks offMore than 22 000 women are expected to lineup for the start of the Cape Town leg of theSPAR women’s road race series in Green-point on Sunday, 29 March this year. The se-ries has become known as South Africa’s‘most beautiful’ race as it is aimed at women.

Women of all ages, shapes, sizes and evenfitness levels are encouraged to take part inthe Cape’s biggest race for women. Entrantscan choose to run or walk either the 10kmor 5km. Cost to enter is R75, and R85 for lateentries.

The 10km run starts at 07h30, walkers at07h45 and the 5km fun run at 08h00. The racestarts next to the Cape Town stadium, fol-
