La Belle by Claire is a West Australian jewellery and headdress designer who is extremely passionate about her job. Claire prides herself on her unique range. Each piece is handmade and has a distinctly different design making it special. Claire speaks to me about her career as a fashion designer...

1.Tell us about La Belle and how it got started?

I come from a motivated family of photographers, artists and a very talented and inspiring costumier for an Aunt. I have grown up with an abundance of feathers, fabrics, paint pots and clay, along with unusual dress ups at a very young age. My first corset was worn on the outside of my bridesmaids dress at age 10 and I was also wearing an amazing headdress. I have been designing and handcrafting jewellery with a real passion since 1992. Some years later when it felt right, I developed and drove my label “La Belle by Claire” which is now known well in the industry for my unique jewellery and wearable Art. I love designing wearable art and unique designs, which people don’t find elsewhere. I just adore my bridal clients, especially when they are involved from the beginning of the design process. The end result is a bride who can honestly say; "I 2.How would you describe your label and its inspirations?

La Belle by Claire is unique jewellery and wearable art. It is custom designed jewellery and headdress for weddings and fashion items in the wardrobe. A very intimate and exclusive label with a hands on approach. I love pushing the boundaries and feeding souls that crave the ultimate design! I generally avoid following catalogue trends as my individual inspiration produces more assorted works. This generates the ability to tailor to my clientele’s requirements. My husband’s hands on and direct approach of “just do it!” is an amazing force of support behind me, plus his forever changing mystical bonsai trees are a huge inspiration of arrangement and effect!

3. What is the best perk in being a designer?

Being able to express yourself creatively with no boundaries and letting whatever is inside come out and just happen. Even if it doesn’t eventuate into what you thought it, would something else will evolve and it keeps you feeling alive. Designers just need to remember to sleep!

4. What do you get up to when you’re away from your line?

I am never “away” from my line; it’s in my blood. My mind is always designing and feeding my soul. I have a sketchpad next to my bed and in my handbag! My daughter is so creative we play with feathers and materials together all the time; I adore her innocent and creative imagination with no inhibitions.

Page 12: Claire La Belle Portfolio

5. What one piece of advice would you give to someone wanting to start a career in fashion?

Work hard at what you love. Very hard. When things seem too hard keep telling yourself; “If you love it, it’s worth it! You’ll make it!”

6. Where do you get your design inspiration from?

Mixed media, art, history and photography. Even everyday events and situations inspire new designs. Although we have not seen each other in over 20 years, my Aunt from the UK is a real inspiration to me. We are on the same path and draw from the same energy within.

7. Describe yourself in 5 words!

Passionate, Driven, Fiery, Ambitious and a little eccentric for sanity’s sake!

8. Where can we expect to find your products?

I am always contactable anytime by phone and email and have regular updates on Facebook and my website. Studio appointments are available for custom and new designs. You will find Bridal pieces at Chein Noir Dezines and commercial line is currently underway for fashion and bridal retail shops coming out early next year. I also teach classes at TAFE Youth Centre’s with young women teaching them my Jewellery techniques and showing them how to create their own masterpiece, which I really enjoy. I annually exhibit with Perth Collage Art Exhibition. I have also had designs on the runway at Skattwalk, Boobalicious Ball, and Mercedes Benz Miami Fashion Week 2010 not to mention many more including art galleries around Western Australia.10. Is there anything else you think people should know about you?Above all I am not only a loving and busy working Mum and Wife, I am a mentor to some, which enables me to express my energy in what I love doing.

An Exquisite Headdress Designer located in WA

To View Online Interview: Colosoul Newest Independent Youth Magazine Perth Western Australia || Reviews || Fashion - LA BELLE BY CLAIRELa Belle by Claire is a West Australian jewellery and headdress designer located in Perth, I found Claire a few months ago while traveling around the Internet and thought I must share this person with you especially if you are in the market for a headdress that is something out of the ordinary, visually stunning or represents more of the person you are then the standard veil.Claire is extremely passionate about her designs and takes the time to hand make each piece so it is distinctly different, you will see throughout this interview a range of designs Claire has created and get to know more about such a creative woman.

Tell us about La Belle? The end result is a bride who can honestly say; "I Love". How would you describe La Belle by Claire designs and where does your inspiration come from?La Belle by Claire is unique jewellery and wearable art. Even everyday events and situations inspire new designs. Although we have not seen each other in over 20 years, my Aunt from the UK is a real inspiration to me. We are on the same path and draw from the same energy within.

How much time goes into making a hairpiece?Depending on the style of the hairpiece that we are designing.  I hand select and purchase materials myself so I don’t purchase a lot online.  I get in my car once a fortnight and shop for client supplies by taking all references and materials with me after my appointment with the client to choose the right materials required.  Generally the clientele seeing me for designing have a lot of faith and trust in me to select the right pieces and to be able to give them comfort in knowing that they are having something made for them that will harmonize and collaborate with their wedding gown beautifully so time wise…. Endless from the beginning right to the collection of their order has a hand on approach.

How does a bride go about getting you to make a hairpiece?Brides can call me anytime to discuss ideas and we can make a suitable appointment or they can simply send me an email with an enquiry and questions and I will get back to them within the day.  I have clients nationally that cannot come directly to my studio so we discuss over the phone and via Skype and emails I can post them their product on completion.  I will also be having an online store on my new website relatively soon which will have available designs to order directly from.

2011

Page 14: Claire La Belle Portfolio

What should I bring with me on my appointment with you?A picture of your dress with any swatches of fabric is always helpful and references to designs you may have seen that you like. Also knowing the type of embellishments on your gown i.e. laces/crystals/ pearls etc always helps in contrasting pieces to match into your jewellery or hairpiece.  Having a good idea of your hairstyle always helps too.

How much on average does a hairpiece cost?Hairpieces can vary from a delicate crystal or flower comb for flower girls and bridesmaids from $50 to a veiling net over the face with flowers and feathers for the bride averaging around $200 - $300 right up to an overstated embellished headdress retailing for around $700.  For example if there is a design out of your budget it may very well be re-designed using alternative materials to be more cost effective and then very well affordable being custom designed.  And remember your piece can be worn again for special occasions and nobody else will have the same one!

What other accessories do you make apart from hairpieces?I make all sorts of Jewellery, beaded Necklaces, Bracelets and earrings along with a lot of wearable art designs such as feather collars and cuffs and shoulder pads and extremely over stated headdresses.  Also bangles and armbands are becoming quite popular too.  I also made recently a Brazilian dancer’s costume with a flowing belt/skirt using satin, feathers and beads and a clip to go onto her Bikini top and a big peacock headdress similar to the one that went to Miami for the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.

Best tip when it comes to wearing a hairpiece:Decide on how you are having your hair FIRST!  So the hairpiece can be designed to wear on the desired side of your head and can then be coordinated with your style or up do.  Also if you want to have the veiling/netting over your face or side of your face for the ceremony you can tousle it up with a bobby pin to two for the reception so it is part of your hairpiece in your hair.  I always make the netting big enough so it is manageable for your hairdresser to play with on the day.

Best suited hairstyles for a hairpiece?Any hairstyle can attach a hairpiece as long as you have enough products i.e mouse and hairspray for it to slide into.  Even if you are having your hair down you can always tie a small strand of your hair or bobby pin it and the comb can easily slide into it.  However one of the nice styles is a lower chignon or bun on the side of the hair behind the ear this always looks beautiful and complimentary.

Trends for hairpieces for 2011 – 2012 weddings? We’ve gone back … right back to through the era’s with vintage and retro through 1920’s headbands and fringing and swinging through the 1950’s inspired hats with lots of overstated tulle!  Bring it on and don’t be afraid.  You have one day to wear an amazing dress and headdress make a statement and make everyone gasp!  Think of it as a model strutting it down the catwalk and everyone is looking at that wonderful collaboration of designs right from your head to your toes! To whom it may concern Re: Claire La Belle’s Creations On Saturday 19 June the Boobalicious Ball was held in the Grand ballroom of the Burswood Exhibition Centre. An important part of the ball is the parade, which this year was themed around Carnivale. Claire La Belle graciously donated her time and created amazing neck and headpieces for the opening segment of the parade. The pieces were amazing and when the lights went onto the catwalk there was a gasp of held breathes around the room. The attention to detail as well as the creativity was truly breath taking and it was a fabulous opening to what was an amazing parade. I would be very happy to discuss further what Claire created for us on the night and I can be contacted on my mobile number below. I have also attached photos of the pieces during the parade as I think they speak louder then my words. Regards Peta
