Class 5M Newsletter Term 1 2020 To Parents / Carers, Welcome to 5M! We have had a very productive start to the term, with all the students in 5M approaching our new units of work with commitment and enthusiasm. There are many exciting events for the Year 5 students to look forward to this year, including our Gold Rush Excursion, Tallebudgera School Camp, and the Leadership Selection Process. Please feel free to email me if you would like to discuss any issues regarding your child’s progress at school. Alternatively, please contact me if you would like to make an appointment so we can meet before or after school. I am looking forward to working with you and your child this year. Students will write a short fantasy story. They will establish a fantasy setting, and create a ‘good’ and ‘evil’ character. Maths Students will develop their understandings of Chance; Factors and Multiples; Rounding Numbers; Comparing and Ordering Fractions and Decimals; and Identifying and Interpreting different types of Data. Students will complete two assessment pieces. They will interpret data and pose questions to gather data, and demonstrate their understanding of multiplication, division and fractions. Science Students will investigate the structural and behavioural adaptations that influence how animals survive in extreme environments. Students will describe the features and adaptations of their own creature that enables it to survive in a specific environment. HASS Students will explore how people and the environment influence each other to create a place. Students will investigate the characteristics of places and make informed conclusions about a preferred place to live. Design and Technology Students investigate how designers develop and create products to support wildlife in different built environments. Students design and make a product that supports wildlife to coexist in the school environment. The Arts Students will explore artists’ use of animal representations and relationship to an environment as inspiration for a sculptured artwork. Students will be assessed on their abilities to manipulate and create animals using clay and discuss how their creation represents their personality.
