Welcome to the Fall/Winter 2019 semester of C.L.A.S.S.

C.L.A.S.S. Registration Requirements & Information:

Registration is required for ALL classes 1 week in advance. Call 864-4167 or online at www.ca.uky.edu/laurel.

Class fees must be paid in advance. Please make checks payable to Laurel County Cooperative Extension. Credit cards are accepted in person and when registering online.

When registering online or by phone, Extension will hold your spot for two weeks until payment is received. If payment is not received 1 week prior to class, your registration will be forfeited.

Please be considerate of others. If you cannot attend please notify the Extension Office so others can participate in the program.

Refunds will only be given if the class is canceled by the Extension Office or if participant requests a refund one week prior to class—unless advertised differently.

Registration is required to receive notification of class changes or cancellation. In the event that insufficient registration requires cancellation of a class, participants

will be notified prior to the class by phone. We only notify those that have registered. If Laurel County Schools are canceled due to inclement weather all C.L.A.S.S. programs

will be canceled. If in doubt, please call the Extension Office at 864-4167 for confirmation or follow us on FACEBOOK at laurelcountyfcs.

Our classes are designed for adults 18 years and older unless advertised differently. All classes are held at the Laurel County Extension Office, 200 County Extension Rd.,

London, KY unless noted otherwise.

Yogurt is a cultured dairy product that can be made from whole, lowfat or skim milk. If you like yogurt and eat it often, you may enjoy

preparing yogurt at home. Join this demonstration class and learn how. Most of the equipment needed to make yogurt can be found in

LEARN TO SEW

Have you ever said “I wish I knew how to sew?” or “Someday, I am going to learn to sew!” Then this class is for you! This week long class is designed just

for beginners. We will be supplying the sewing machines, supplies and basic tools so students may come and focus on the process of sewing. We will be starting with the very basics: components of the sewing machine and some basic tools and supplies used in sewing. Each day, students will add to their skill set and make and take several small items they create during the week.

LET’S CROCHET- BEGINNER DISHCLOTH

Learning to crochet is fun. This pattern is a single crochet pattern. You will learn to chain and do a single crochet stitch. Participants will

need, an H or I crochet hook and cotton yarn. These samples were made using Peaches and Cream. One skein will make 1-3 dishcloths.

BASIC CAKE DECORATING

During this four session class, students will quickly learn how easy it is to create that special decorated dessert for any and all occasions.

Students will learn to ice and decorate a cake and other sweet treats, make several different buttercream icing flowers, pipe lines and make

simple borders, letters and shapes on your cake; transfer images to a cake to decorate, make icing the right consistency to decorate; fill

and use a decorating bag, and much more.

sure to have seen many ads for check advance loans that now flood radio and television airwaves. Come learn how these loans work and

see if a Check Advance Loan is the best choice for you.

TWISTED RIBBONS QUILT

Come explore the endless design possibilities of the simple half-square triangle (HST). While the quilt pictured has a very modern feel, the

pattern also works very well with more traditional fabrics and colors. Imagine it with a variety of Christmas fabrics and a solid red or green

ribbon winding through the quilt. Part of the fun will be seeing how the look changes with individual fabric selections. Instructor will

provide tips for faster cutting and piecing, so you have more time to play at the design wall. The quilt finishes to approximately 67”x 82”.

treatments that you can do yourself.

STITCH BOOK

Come create a fabric book that showcases different embroidery stitches that you will be learning in this 4 week class. During this

course you will create a small, fabric journal to document 12 or more stitches. We will use a variety of threads and techniques. Participants

should bring scissors, and any threads, needles, or thimbles they would like to experiment with. Instructor will provide threads, fabric for book,

needles, small hoops, and marking pencils/pens.

SIMPLE CROCHET SCARF

In this class you will be learning the double crochet stitch to create this beautiful scarf. If you are new to crocheting and started with

the dishcloth, this class will be the perfect follow up to increase your crocheting skills. Participants of all skill levels are encouraged to

attend. This scarf is not only simple to make but would make a great gift. Participants need to bring an H or I crochet needle and one skein

of 4 ply yarn. Samples were made using one 4 ply skein of Red Heart.

ENGLISH PAPER PIECING

English Paper Piecing (EPP), is the technique of folding fabric over paper templates and hand sewing these together. The paper

template shape ensures the blocks are accurate and also makes it easier to piece angles together. This quilting technique requires only

paper, fabric, scissors, thread, and needles, so it’s a great craft to take with you. Join us as we learn the technique of EPP while we create this

adorable pin cushion. Students should bring 100% cotton thread in a neutral color and hand sewing needles. Fabric and pattern pieces will

be supplied by the instructor.

CREDIT REPORT VS. CREDIT SCORE

By law, everybody can obtain three free credit reports each year. The information in your credit report affects your life in important ways –

your ability to get a loan, how much you pay for credit and insurance, securing a job, renting a house or apartment, and preventing identity

theft. It is important to check your report regularly to make sure it is accurate and up-to-date. The credit reporting system is set up

so that you are responsible for finding and correcting errors. You must play the role of quality controller for the information in your reports. Many people use the terms “credit report” and “credit

score” interchangeably, but they are not the same. Come learn the difference and find out how you can get a free credit report.

MYSTERY (QUILT) SATURDAY

Every year the Mountain Laurel Quilt Club, a specialty club of the Laurel County Extension Homemakers, host a Mystery Quilt Saturday.

You are cordially invited to join the fun. Participants who register will receive clues (cutting instructions, supplies list, etc.,) via e-mail,

Facebook, or text. The clues will help you be prepared to sew on the day of the class. You won’t know what you are making until you get your first block made (that’s the mystery). You are encouraged

to bring a covered dish to share for lunch. Registration is simple just register online and the Mystery coordinator will contact you with

further instructions. You are not required to stay the full time unless you desire.

with plenty of samples, tablescapes with holiday decorating ideas, and demonstrations from experts in the field. This year we are focusing on updating our favorite recipes. Whether it is a recipe that has been passed down through

family or an interesting recipe you came across in an old cookbook – sometimes they need a bit of adjusting whether to make them healthier or because

ingredients are hard to source. Learn tips on how to modify your favorite recipes and sample recipes from the featured cookbook that we have revised. A limited

number of tickets will be on sale at the Extension Office. Event tickets must be purchased in advance and includes our featured cookbook “Recipes to

Students will receive instruction on how to prepare their own t-shirts and be ready to sew together a memorable t-shirt quilt. T-shirts

square ruler or larger, and fusible lightweight interfacing. One yard of interfacing will do 2 plus shirts. Instructor will have some interfacing for

LIVING WILLS: WHAT IS IT AND DO I NEED ONE?

A Living Will gives you a voice in decisions about your medical care when you are unconscious or too ill to communicate. A Living Will

allows you to leave instructions in four critical areas. In Kentucky it is not necessary to have an attorney to draw up your living will. You can

designate a health care surrogate, refuse or request life prolonging treatment, refuse or request artificial feeding or hydration (tube feeding) and/or express your wishes regarding organ donation.

Everyone age 18 and older can have a living will. Come learn more about Living Wills and how to create one should you decide it is right

for you.
