Rescue & Review Information

The goal of R&R is to ensure that each student knows the standards and is doing his/her best and reaching his/her potential.

Students needing assistance in a course are expected to attend

R&R, preferably BEFORE the final test for that unit.

Page 8: CLASS OF 2018 ECCHS: Nurturing, Educating, and Graduating tomorrow’s leaders… The Blue Way!

If the student never comes to rescue or recover his/her test, he/she will keep the

original grade.

TIPS FOR BECOMING A BETTER TEST TAKER

• Keep up with your homework and reading assignments prior to the test. If you do, you won’t be overwhelmed when it’s time to study / review for the test.

• Get enough sleep on the night before the test. It’s hard to focus when you haven’t had enough sleep.

• Eat a good breakfast on the morning of the test. It’s also hard to focus when you are hungry.

• Make sure that you have everything you need for the test, such as pencils, paper, a calculator, etc. That way you won’t spend your time before the test frantically looking for what you need. Instead, you can use the last few minutes to review or just to relax.

• As you go through the test, put a dot or a light check mark by any answer you aren’t sure of. After you’ve gone through all of the questions, go back to the ones that you marked and try them again.

• Check over your answers before you turn in your test to be sure you haven’t made a careless mistake.

SUGGESTIONS FOR SPECIFIC TYPES OF TEST QUESTIONS

Learning How to Take Tests

Page 17: CLASS OF 2018 ECCHS: Nurturing, Educating, and Graduating tomorrow’s leaders… The Blue Way!

Multiple-Choice Questions • Read the main part of the question and think of a possible answer – then

look for it in the list of choices.• Use a process of elimination. Read all the choices and eliminate those that

are obviously incorrect. Choose from the remaining answers.• Look for qualifying statements or words. You can usually eliminate choices

that contain qualifying words such as always, all, none, never, or not.• If two choices are either similar or opposites, one of them is probably the

correct choice.• Read ALL of the choices before choosing your answer.• Don’t second guess yourself; usually your first choice is the right one unless

you misread the question.• If there is an “All of the above” option and you know that at least two of the

choices are correct, select “All of the above” as your answer.

Page 18: CLASS OF 2018 ECCHS: Nurturing, Educating, and Graduating tomorrow’s leaders… The Blue Way!

True / False Questions

• Be suspicious of very broad statements. A statement that contains the words always or never may sound true, but such broad words usually make it false.

• Look out for one small word or phrase that may change an otherwise true statement.

• Statements with usually, often, sometimes, most, and many are usually true.

Page 19: CLASS OF 2018 ECCHS: Nurturing, Educating, and Graduating tomorrow’s leaders… The Blue Way!

Fill-in-the-Blank Questions

• The incomplete sentence will probably contain clues. For example, does the verb indicate a singular or plural noun?

• Pay attention to the number of blank spaces provided. The number of blanks will often indicate how many words are needed to answer the question.

• If you can’t think of the exact word, don’t leave the space blank. Try an answer that is close since it may earn you partial credit.

Page 20: CLASS OF 2018 ECCHS: Nurturing, Educating, and Graduating tomorrow’s leaders… The Blue Way!

Essay Questions• Read the question at least twice to know exactly what is being asked.• Before you do any writing, brainstorm. Jot down the key words, ideas, and points that you

want to cover in your answer. If you have time, organize your ideas into a simple outline; if not, just number your ideas in the order you want to present them.

• Organize your ideas into paragraphs. Use clear, concise, complete sentences, and write neatly. Begin each paragraph with a topic sentence that expresses the main idea of the paragraph, and don’t forget to include a conclusion.

• Don’t be vague – give specific examples and explanations.• Don’t go off on a tangent; stick to the point.• Avoid “padding” your answer with unnecessary words.• Look over your essay and check for the following:

– omitted words– improper punctuation– errors in grammar– careless spelling– reversals (for example, 1942 for 1492)– wrong references to people and places

Page 21: CLASS OF 2018 ECCHS: Nurturing, Educating, and Graduating tomorrow’s leaders… The Blue Way!

Standardized Test Questions• Use a #2 pencil only.• Bubble in your answers neatly and be sure to fill in the circles completely.• Make sure your marks are dark; answers filled in too lightly may not be

read by the Scantron machine.• Avoid making stray marks on the answer sheet.• Be sure that you are marking your answer on the correct portion of the

answer sheet. Also, make sure that the number of the answer you are bubbling in matches the number of the question.

• Don’t be afraid to write in the test booklet! Underline or circle the key parts of the question or the reading passage.

• Be careful to answer each question completely. For example, many mathematics questions require two steps to find the answer. However, the choices will typically include the answer to step 1 as a distractor.
