Last week we gathered as a College community to farewell the graduating ‘Class of 2019’ and to celebrate the

way in which our current Year 12 students have used their talents for

their own enrichment and that of the people surrounding them.

We recognised, applauded and gave thanks for just some of the gifts this cohort has offered since their Year 8

enrolment back in 2015.

The students had two events to commemorate their time at Gleeson College. On Thursday evening, we

gathered with parents and families to celebrate a Farewell Mass and also conducted an Awards ceremony in the DRMC. On Friday morning we

then assembled as a whole College community to acknowledge the

contributions of the Year 12 students, followed by a shared morning tea in

Mary’s Courtyard with staff.

A WORD FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Year 12 FarewellIt was my pleasure to address Year 12 students on Friday last week as they concluded their formal lessons for the year. I would like to share one section of my message to them:

“This week saw the grand final of The Masked Singer. I wonder if any of

you watched it. I did. Reluctantly at first but it got my interest. The thing

that I found most fascinating was the response given by most of the celebrities when they finally had to

reveal their identity. Almost all of them said something like this when asked about the experience of performing

in the mask: They talked about feeling anonymous and therefore being able to express themselves without fear.

They felt they could perform without judgement of their looks or popularity. Basically, the mask allowed them to be brave and be themselves without fear.

This made me stop and think – how much more brave to be yourself

without fear and without a mask. And this is what we hope for you in life

beyond Gleeson College. You don’t need a mask to express who you

have become. To walk into the world beyond school and be brave in your

choices, brave in your work and brave in your life. We hope you have become strong men and women who will make

your mark in the world and not need to hide behind masks or rely on masks to provide courage. Instead we hope

that the strength you need comes from within, through the faith and the

spirit you have developed and we have nurtured as a Catholic community.”

Examinations & Final AssessmentsNext week marks the beginning of Year 12 Examinations. In most cases, these exams will count for 30% of the final score in each examined subject. We pray for our Year 12 students as they undertake these examinations and complete final external assessments. We hope that they reap the rewards of their hard work during the year and their preparation in the last weeks. Thank you to all the staff and families who have supported our Year 12 students thus far. We eagerly await the results on Tuesday 17 December.

Year 11 students have only two and a half weeks before their exams commence in Week 6 so they should be busy planning study programs and organising notes from the start of the semester. The Year 10 students start their exams in Week 7. Just 8 weeks to Christmas!

November > Praying for the DeceasedThe Church has designated November as a particular time in the liturgical year to pray for those who have died. We pray specifically for All Souls in a special way on Saturday 2 November, but we are encouraged to include the deceased in our prayers throughout November.

As we start November today, I would like to particularly mention our colleague Vicki Weaver who passed away at this time last year. We also remember all those associated with the Gleeson community who have died.

We dedicate the following prayer to them:

Eternal rest grant onto them O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon

them. May their souls and the soulsof all the faithful departed, through

the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Joe Corbo,Deputy Principal

The thoughts, prayers and support of our Gleeson community are with Isaac Awramenko (12 FSHOL) and his family on the recent passing of

his beloved Grandfather, along with Samuel (9 HMSCH) and Tahlia (11 HSPLL) Borg and their family on

the recent passing of their beloved Grandfather, and Cody (11 FSBOC)

and Michaela (11 FSHOL) Rutter and their family on the recent passing of

their beloved Grandfather.

May they rest in peace and God comfort their family and friends

at this sad time.

With Sympathy

Rest In Peace

HEROES + VILLAINS > 2019 CREATIVE ARTS CONCERTTuesday night saw the culmination of a year’s worth of work presented on stage at the Creative Arts Evening,

themed “Heroes and Villains”.

Students from Music, Dance and Creative Arts classes presented their

original work in this showcase of choreography, music compositions,

photography, animation, drama, filmmaking and visual art. The night also featured performances from the Stage Band, Concert Band, Concert Choir, Junior Rock Band, Senior Rock Band, Year 9 Band and Year 10 Band.

It was a hugely entertaining evening and all students who presented their work should be extremely proud of themselves. A special thank you to

Ms Kerri-Anne Freeth for the amazing photos taken on the night!

Congratulations to all our Creativeand Performing Artists of 2019!

YEAR 7 + YEAR 8 DANCE + DRAMA > TERM 3 HIGHLIGHTS

YEAR 7 DANCE + DRAMATo celebrate the end of a wonderful

term of Dance and Drama,Mrs Parsons’ Year 7 Dance and

Miss Wigg’s Year 7 Drama Classes performed a showcase of their final

performances to each other.

Mrs Parsons’ Year 7 Dance Class performed a ‘cool’ hip-hop dance

routine with tricky choreography, and some small groups performed their

own choreographed pieces.

Miss Wigg’s Year 7 Drama Class performed a scripted performance of Sue Murray’s “Time Out.” Students enjoyed exploring this play which

delved into a range of scenarios and characters, around the issues that time can create, and how we can overcome

those obstacles and stresses.

Students received glowing feedback from Deputy Principal, Mr Joe Corbo,

who was very impressed with the talent and teamwork showcased throughout.

YEAR 8 DANCE + DRAMAMiss Wigg’s Year 8 Drama

Class performed three scripted performances of twisted fairytales from

Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes.

Students embraced their characters, used costume and set to effect, and enjoyed entertaining their audience

particularly through the comedic antics in their stories.

Mrs Parsons’ Year 8 Dance Class showcased two class dances - a

hip hop number performed to Ava Max’s “So Am I” and a Jazz routine choreographed by Sarah McIver in preparation for her Creative Arts

project. Some students performed their small group routines as well.

We thank Mrs Rebecca Sinclair for attending both performances,

where she captured some wonderful moments.

YEAR 10 HISTORY > ‘THROUGH THEIR EYES’ EXHIBITION

On Wednesday evening last week, both Year 10 History Classes shared the

results of their independent research into one of the following two topics >

• The Holocaust• Civil Rights Era

(Australia & America)

The exhibition, “Through Their Eyes”, was a study in perspective, empathy

and source analysis; and not only further developed important historical

skills, but also, life skills.

Students used a historical source from which to inspire their research, and created a guiding question. From

this they created their own historical artifact to share with peers, parents

and the teaching staff at Gleeson. The work the students produced and the manner in which they engaged with the activity was very rewarding for all

involved. It was inspiring to see how all students were able to share with our

visitors their learning; conversing with empathy, authority and an insightful perception of their chosen topics. It was inspiring to see their faces light

up with enthusiasm and confidence in their topic as they shared with people of all ages, from within the school and

the broader community.

This was an excellent example of Gleeson’s HEART pedagogy in action.

Thanks must of course be given to the students, who not only produced outstanding pieces of work, but also for their willingness to share outside of school hours. I would also like to

thank Miss Krystal West and Miss Gaby Centofanti for their work with both

Year 10 classes and their commitmentto the success of the evening.

GEN BRYANT MUSIC MINISTRY PERFORMANCE + WORKSHOPGleeson students were presented with the opportunity to hear from talented

musician Gen Bryant in the Dame Roma Mitchell Centre early this term.

Gen connected, engaged and inspired our students through her music, firstly

by running an interactive workshop with our Year 9-11 Music Classes, and then holding a concert with our Year 7 students. Gen is a Melbourne-based,

singer-songwriter of contemporary and Christian music and had our students

up singing and dancing through a mixture of modern and original pieces.

We were also privileged to welcome students from the Thomas More

College Ministry Band. All our students had a great time and we should thank Peter Bierer and the Catholic Office for Youth and Young Adults for providing

us with this opportunity.

YEAR 7 GIRLS FOOTBALL TEAM EARN DIVISION 1 STATE FINALS SPOTLast week, 11 talented young

footballers travelled to Barratt Reserve (West Beach) to take on the rest of the state! As a result of making the Grand

Final in the Central Districts Crows Cup 9-a-Side Girl’s Football Competition

at the beginning of the year, Gleeson College were invited to attend the

inaugural Crows Cup State Finals. This consisted of 24 of the best schools in

the state competing in over 100 games across two massive days.

Our goal heading into the competition was to play well enough in our grading games to make Division 1 in order to compete for the State Championship.

Despite some very physical competition, the girls produced some

excellent football on the first day, winning their first three matches and only conceding a total of 27 points. This ranked the team 4th out of the

24 schools and giving us a Division 1 spot. The competition was divided into four divisions with six schools in each

division.

Division 1 definitely lived up to its name with some fierce competition and terrific footballers. Despite not winning a Division 1 game, our girls played some brilliant football. We were able to match it with the very

best female footballers in the state in each of the games. It was consistency

over the course of an entire game that let us down. An example of this

was against Christies Beach when we conceded five goals in the first half and then kept them scoreless in the

second half. We also outscored Trinity Gardens (eventual State Champions) in the second half of that game as well. Regardless of this, it was an excellent

experience for the girls and we were very proud to be the coaches of this amazing team. The future of female football at Gleeson is looking bright.

The girls who represented Gleeson College at the 2019 Crows Cup State Finals were: Georgia Pezzaniti (7ROG),

Keely Adams-Kramer (7ZAC), Ava Aistrope (7ZAC), Ashleigh Ovenden

(7ROG), Ashlee Lemmer (7BAR), Sinead Lauber (7ROG), Bayley Hancock

(7GLO), Coby Morgan (7ZAC), Lily Noye (7ROG), Jade Amos (7ROG)

and Ella Cesaro (7ROG). We were also lucky enough to have the assistance of Emily Fitzsimmons (7ZAC), Emily Carden (11 MSSEL), Alicia Malatesta (11 DSHUT) and Natasha Hossen (11 HSGLO) on the day which was greatly

appreciated.

YEAR 7 GIRLS FOOTBALL TEAM EARN DIVISION 1 STATE FINALS SPOT

Last week, Year 7 students had the wonderful opportunity to view a live-streamed performance of Nathaniel

Moncrieff’s engaging play “April Aardvark” performed by Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP)

in Sydney!

The performance was engaging, funny, but with a strong focus on the effects of bullying. “April Aardvark” had a clever storyline following EZ

and his gang of bullies who created a fake social media account to

inflict torment and misery on their fellow students, when the next day

a student shows up to class claiming to be April Aardvark. She is the

living, breathing manifestation ofthe account - a mean, obscene

insult machine.

The Year 7 students who stayed during lunchtime to view the

performance in its entirety were

YEAR 7 DRAMA LIVE-STREAM ATYP’S PRODUCTION “APRIL AARDVARK” FROM SYDNEY!

captivated by the performance and were able to identify the key themes explored in particular around respect,

friendship, and privacy online.

Thank you to the Year 7 Care Group Teachers and to Mrs Sally Parsons for

supporting this exciting opportunityfor the Year 7s.

YEAR 8&9 GIRLS KO TENNIS TEAM CONTESTS STATEWIDE COMP.Gleeson’s top junior players went to

St Peter’s Girls College on Wednesday to face off against Both St Peter’s and Adelaide High School teams in the Statewide Knockout Tennis

Competition.

Our squad included an excellent mix of youth and enthusiasm, with all four

girls in Year 8 and led from the front by Captain Brooke. The doubles pairings

were Chloe and Brooke, Mercedes and Tia. All girls played extremely

well. Highlights include an epic win for Mercedes and Tia against the

powerhouse Adelaide HS in the doubles and a heart breaking tie-breaker defeat for Chloe and Brooke in theirs against

St Peter’s. Playing against teams of Year 9 girls and some very heavy hitters

from the Metro league has given the squad fantastic experience and we look forward to going even deeper into the

competition next year.

Any students inspired by these girls and wanting to find out more about

playing Tennis for the College can come to the Thursday coaching sessions at

the Golden Grove Rec Centre (Hockey Pitch) or come and talk to Mr Hernes

or Mr Puttnins directly.
