Oliver, an orphan ,runs away from the orphanage where he is ill treated and lands in a den of thieves. The thieves

take Oliver to rob a house, but are stopped by the servants. They run away ,leaving a wounded Oliver behind. The

servants take him into the house. Read on to find what happens to Oliver.

Mrs. Marlie and Rose, her niece, were waiting anxiously for the doctor to arrive.

Rose : I hear the carriage pulling up. That must be Dr. Losberne!( The doctor enters) Oh please, will you come upstairs

and look at the poor thing?

Dr. Losberne : Certainly. Perhaps Giles can lead me to the room where he is resting.

The doctor stayed in the patient’s room for a long time and asked for a few things.

Dr.Losberne: Bring some water warm water. And more clean

sheets.

At last, the doctor returned to the dining room to speak to the

ladies.

Mrs. Marlie : I hope he’s not in danger ?

Dr. Losberne : No, Mrs. Marlie. He will be well again in a week or

two. Have you seen the thief ?

The ladies had not seen the’ thief’ yet. When they entered the

room, they stared in surprise.

Mrs. Marlie : Why, he is a mere child ! This poor child cannot be a

thief!

Rose: Oh, the poor thing! Auntie, don’t let them send the boy to

prison!

Dr. Losberne: Let us discuss this in the next room. We must not

wake him up.

All three of them discussed the matter in whispers.

Dr. Losberne: We should listen to what he has to say. If he is

innocent, then we can help him. If he is guilty , we should hand

him over to the police.

Mrs. Marlie: yes, I agree. But I am certain that he is blameless.

In the evening when Oliver woke up, he was tired . But he was also keen to tell his story to Rose and Mrs. Marlie.

Oliver: ....the thieves wanted me to do all kinds of wrong things. They wanted me to rob your house. And then they

left me wounded here.

The ladies were moved by the story of Oliver’s unhappy life.

Rose: We must not let the police take him away.

Mrs. Marlie : I would not harm one hair of his head. We must prepare the servants for when the police arrive.

Soon the police arrived to inquire about the robbery.

Servant1: the robbers were two evil looking men.

Housekeeper: I hope you will find those men and punish them.

Giles: Little Oliver wounded himself while playing earlier.

The police believed the servants and left Oliver in peace. Mrs. Marlie and Rose took wonderful care of Oliver.

My Puppy Plays Piano

My puppy plays piano It’s the strangest thing to see. It seems, while I was practicing, he learned by watching me. He started out on chopsticks, then he learned to play some Bach. It wasn’t long before he knew the blues and classic rock.

He also taught my kitten how so they could play duets, and then they taught guitar and drums to all my other pets.

They formed a band and practiced hard and traveled all around, and instantly got famous for their catchy “Pet Rock” sound.

They made a smash hit record and it wasn’t very long before my pets were millionaires because they wrote this song.

Natural Disasters, Their Effects and Precautions

DISASTER Disaster is a sudden hazard or a calamity which can cause great damage and destruction. It can result in heavy loss to life and property. For example, a cyclone can kill thousands of people and cause damage to buildings and crops. A Tsunami can strike and kill thousands and uproot buildings and structures. Such disasters can disrupt the day-to-day life completely. Normal food and water supplies get seriously affected in the affected areas. The shelters get uprooted bringing utter misery to the people. It brings the normal functioning of the life to a complete halt. WHY DO NATURAL DISASTERS OCCUR? Natural disasters occur because of natural occurrences and beyond the control of human beings .Cyclones, tornadoes, earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, floods, landslides are some of the examples of natural disasters which are known to hit the mother earth several times during one’s life period. VARIOUS FORMS OF NATURAL DISASTERS Natural disasters strike us in various forms. They are given as follows: 1. Earthquakes 2.Cyclones and storm surges 3.Floods 4.Droughts 5. Tsunamis 6.Volcanic eruptions 7.Landslides EARTHQUAKES The sudden shaking and the vibrations on the crust of the earth are called an earthquake. Earthquakes usually last for less than a minute but tremors can be felt over large areas. The vibrations during the earthquake can destroy cities and countries and kill thousands of people at an instant. They shake buildings, structures and earth vertically. Epicentre is the place directly above the surface of an earthquake from where the earthquake travels in waves and spreads. Maximum vibrations take place at the epicentre and hence maximum destruction of property and loss of life also takes place in places close to the epicentre. Seismograph is a device used to measure the intensity of an earthquake. The vibrations caused by the earthquake are measured by Richter scale. On a scale of 1- 8, it measures the intensity of earthquakes to distinguish between minor earthquakes and major earthquakes. Causes of an earthquake 1. Tectonic movement-This particularly happens when the continental plate collides against the oceanic plate. 2. Volcanic activity-Earthquakes may also be caused by the movement of Lava beneath the surface of the earth during volcanic activity. 3. Landslides and avalanches. 4. Denudation of the land masses and deposition of materials. 5. Faulting and folding in the rock beds are responsible for causing minor earthquakes. Effects of an earthquake 1. Earthquake causes destruction of buildings, bridges and many men and animals are killed or buried under collapsed houses or buildings. 2. Rails are folded, while underground wires are broken. Fire breaks out inevitably in large towns. 3. Earthquakes originate sea waves called tsunamis. 4. Earthquakes result in the formation of cracks and fissures on the ground formation. Safety measures during an earthquake 1. Locate a place in each room of the house that you can go to in case of an earthquake. It should be a spot where nothing is likely to fall on you, like a door frame. 2. Drop down, take cover under the desk or table and hold on. 3. Stay indoors until the shaking stops and you are sure it’s safe to exit. 4. Stay away from book cases or furniture that can follow new fall on you. 5. Stay away from windows. In a high rise building expect the fire alarms and sprinklers to go off during an earthquake. 6. If you are in bed, hold on and stay there, protecting your head with a pillow. 7. If you are outdoors, find a clear spot away from buildings, trees and power lines. Drop down to the ground. 8. If you are in a car, slow down and drive to a clear place. Stay in the car until the shaking stops.

TSUNAMI Tsunamisare huge waves created by underwater earthquake deep near the ocean floor. When an earthquake strikes near a sea floor, the sea floor moves up and down. Such an earthquake sends out shock waves called tsunamis. These waves are very big and powerful and can travel in every direction. A Tsunami can move hundreds of miles per hour in the ocean and can strike the land with the waves as high as 100 feet. As it approaches the shore, it increases in height and causes unimaginable damages to life and property near the sea shore. Effects of a Tsunami The effect of the tsunami is most visible in the coastal area. The walls, doors, windows and floors of the house in the area start shaking and vibrating. Household furniture and articles begin to rattle. Dishes and glass pieces crash to the floor and break. On 11th March, 2011 the tsunami in Japan left thousands dead and many more homeless. FLOODS A flood is an overflow of water from a river or any other body of water. It causes heavy loss to life and property. Floods damage property and crops. People become homeless as their homes are destroyed due to floods. Floods also endanger the lives of the people. They can cause death due to drowning. The flood water contaminates food and drinking water and spreads diseases. Causes of floods 1. Too much water from heavy rains and over flowing rivers 2. Sudden melting of snow from the hills 3. Exceptionally high tides 4. Landslide causing damage to river 5. Collapsing of a dam 6. Fractured pipeline Flash floods Some floods occur slowly over a period of days but flash floods develop very quickly, at times in just few minutes and without any visible signs of rain. Flash floods can occur in flood prone area with or without typical warning like heavy rains. Flash floods occur when heavy rain falls in an area. Flash floods have roaring water, carrying rocks, mud and other debris and sweeps away anything in its way. Safety measures during floods 1. If you see flood water, move away to a higher place. 2. Do not play near or try to swim in flood water. 3. Avoid intake of flood water as it may be contaminated. 4. Clean and disinfect everything that got to wet as mud left from flood water can contain sewage and chemicals. 5. Keep waterproof bags to prevent food and clothing from getting wet. 6. Switch off and unplug all electrical appliances. 7. Listen to flood warnings on radio or TV for latest information. 8. Listen to news reports if the water supply to you is safe to drink or not. 9. Do not drive near flood water. DROUGHT A drought is a long period of very dry weather. The moisture content of the soil becomes too low causing cracks to appear on the soil. The farmers can neither sow crops nor save the standing crops which wither away because of lack of moisture. Droughts take place mostly in arid or semi- arid climate where there is very little rainfall. With nothing left to grow and eat, the people start moving towards areas where they can get food and employment. Causes of Drought 1. Deficiency of rainfall over a period of time resulting in water shortage. 2. In some regions the main source of water is the snowfall which melts during the summer and reaches the plains. If enough snowfall does not take place it can cause scarcity of water and subsequent drought.

Effects of drought in rural areas 1. Loss of crop. 2. Insufficient water for drinking and other uses. 3. Lack of sanitation and contamination. 4. Severe food shortage leading to malnutrition and starvation deaths. 5. Poverty, unemployment and economic disaster. Effects of drought and urban areas 1. Increase in prices of wheat, rice, vegetables, pulses and fruits. 2. Shortage of dairy products. 3. Insufficient drinking water. 4. Shortage of water for watering plants trees and grass. VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS When molten rock and gaserupt through the surface of the earth because of pressure built up, it is called volcanic eruption. The molten rock which shoots through the narrow cracks in the earth and settles the outside is called lava. Effects of volcanic eruptions It can cause loss of life and severe damage to property; it causes suffocation and lower visibility. Volcanic Ash can affect people staying hundred miles from volcano. CYCLONES Cyclones are tropical storms that rotate anticlockwise around an eye. In other parts of the world, they are known as typhoons and hurricanes. Cyclones are caused by warm moist air rising above the ocean forming a low pressure area below. Other air tries to move in and start swirling and growing .They have a wind speed between 120 to 200 kilometres per hour. When theyhit the land, the accompanying heavy rains and strong winds and waves can destroy buildings, trees and structures. That can cause immense loss of life. The earth’s spinning motion may also cause a cluster of storms to rotate and become a cyclone. Storm surge Because of the lower atmospheric pressure in the eye of the cyclone, the water rises up like a mound and causes heavy waves of water called storm surge. LANDSLIDES Landslide is defined as the movement of a mass of rock, debris or earth down a slope due to gravity. The materials may move by falling, toppling, sliding, spreading or flowing. What causes a landslide? Almost every landslide has many causes for. Landslides can be triggered by rainfall, snowmelt, changes in water level, stream erosion, changes in groundwater, earthquakes, volcanic activity, disturbance by human activities or any combination of these factors. Preventive measures 1. Covering the land with impermeable membranes in order to prevent water infiltration in the landslide. 2. Directing surface water sources away from the landslides. 3. Draining groundwater streams away from the landslides. 4. Minimising irrigation on the surface of the soil. In case of such disasters, help is provided by the government to the affected areas .Army helicopters supply food, medicines and other supplies to the areas hit by disasters such as floods or an earthquake.

After reading about disasters ,answer the following questions in any note book.

1. What do you mean by disaster? 2. Name any four disasters that you have heard about. 3. What is tsunami? 4. What are earthquakes? 5. Write about any three damages caused by Tsunami. 6. How do floods occur? 7. How do floods affect the life of the people? 8. What are flash floods? 9. List any four things which we should not do during floods. 10. State two main causes of drought. 11. What is a cyclone? 12. What is a volcanic eruption? 13. List any three effects of drought on (a) rural areas (b) towns and cities 14. What is landslide?

BASED ON THE ABOVE INFORMATION ,PREPARE A SIMILAR REPORT ON THE VIRUS THAT HAS HIT THE WORLD TODAY.GET THE FACTS AND FIGURES FROM VARIOUS SOURCES. FIND OUT HOW AND WHY IT HAPPENED,WHAT EFFECT IT HAD ON THE WORLD,WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE CONSEQUENCES AND HOW IT AFFECTED YOU.

Music Worksheet :Introduction to the Musical Notes and Symbols

The Egg shaped note is known as Semi-breve.

In North America this note is known as Whole note,

which is the popular term used around the world. A Whole note

takes 4 beats.

A line on the right side of the Whole Note turns the note into a Minim. It

is also known as the Half Note. It takes 2 beats.

When you shade a Minim from the inside it becomes a Crotchet. It is also

known as the Quarter Note.

It takes only 1 beat.

When you put a tail or a flag on the top of a Crotchet’s line, it becomes a

Quaver. It is also known as the Eighth Note. It takes Half beat.

This symbol is known as Treble Clef. The Instruments and voices that have higher

notes or high pitch are written on the Treble Clef.

This symbol is known as Bass Clef. The Instruments and voices that have lower notes

or low pitch are written on the BassClef.
