CLASS IX and X HOLIDAY HOMEWORK

PROUD TO BE AN INDIAN Loyalty, integrity and unity are the three pillars upon which Indian Culture stands. The opulent heritage of India unveils the magic of the past that tends to meet the present. India has since time immemorial fascinated the world with its diversity. The country is vast and is home to approximately 1/6th of the population of the world. Over the years, India has evolved in all spheres only to emerge stronger and better. This mystical ancient land has plenty to offer.

India is proud to be a union of 28 states as well as 7 Union Territories. It is a democratic Republic where Sovereignty and Secularism rule. It has a Parliamentary system of Government.

This is a short endeavour to know about our country which we are proud of. This homework has been designed so as to help us know our country through the diversity each state brings in its existence.

Homework should be prepared in the form of a magazine, highlighting the different aspects of the state you belong to. The cover page of the homework should illustrate a famous art form associated with the state. Design the Index sheet for the contents by using autoshapes/ tables (autoformat)/ using your own bullet designs etc. with the page numbers. Content for each topic given below should not exceed two A-4 coloured sheets. Please note that the holiday homework should be an indigenous effort of the student. No marks will be allotted if found otherwise. Date of submission of the homework for both classes IX and X is 10th of July’13 (Wednesday).

• Write an introductory article which discusses a brief history of the state, how it came into existence and any two famous personalities whose name is ubiquitous with the name of the state.

• Write a letter to your friend (in the language opted as II Language) inviting him/her to visit your native state .Describe few local festivals/traditions celebrated and the native cuisines which he/she can enjoy during his/her stay.

Select any one monument of the state. • Identify the principle(s) of physics involved in its designing (acoustics, construction

etc.). State at least one extraordinary feature used in the architecture/ design. Paste relevant pictures.

• Pollution effects are not confined to the environment. The potential for damage to historical monuments has already been realized .Pollution contributes risk factors that can increase the level of destruction of monuments also.

1. Conduct a case study on the monument (chosen for physics homework) on the basis of following points: a) Introduction b) Materials used for construction c) Chemicals used for restoration 2. As a citizen of India, what can you do for preserving our heritage?

• India`s unique topography, terrain, climate and vegetation, brings out natural diversity that cannot be witnessed anywhere else in the world. Prepare a detailed report on the following:

Describe any one species each of flora and fauna found in and around the monument chosen above; specifying the habitat (deciduous forests/rainforests, wetland habitats, marine ecosystems, grasslands, etc) along with the scientific name, ecology, conservation status and the steps initiated by the government/local bodies/people to safeguard those species.

• India is world's 12th largest economy. It is the 128th largest in the world on per capita basis. However, states have a major role to play in the economic development of India.

Weave a report of economic development in the last two decades highlighting the Growth of cities and its corresponding change in the economic activities.

• Experts in Public finance recognized the importance of studying the behaviour of different government expenditure compositions.

Collect the details of the budget allocation for health, education, transport and housing for the last fiscal year i.e.2012-2013 for the state. Also find the expenditure in each department and calculate the deficit in the budget. Represent the above data using a Bar Graph. Compare the allocations using a pie chart.

Location on a map Brief history of the place of tourist interest How to reach –shortest route from the state capital Maintenance of the place/site by the local administration Fold a A4 size sheet into 3 folds to create the brochure and place it in the holiday homework folder by creating a pocket.

Page 4: Class X HHW 2013

• Dance and music are the hidden language of the soul’. Which dance and folk music forms

are prominent in the state? Enumerate their various facets which should include origin, form, costume, occasion of performance. Also give a brief write-up about the famous artists of these dance/music forms and the role of the state government in patronizing them.
