Breakfast Run to Virginia Airport - Sunday 20 October, 2013. by Alan Young, Theo Alberda and Colin Flett

Dave Stone can always be relied upon to organize an interesting breakfast run and, together with Graham Palmer, the run on Sunday 20th October was no exception. From the show of hands at the main meeting it was anticipated that +/- 12 members would attend at the Hyper-by-the-Sea gathering point but they just kept coming until there were eventually 25 members and 21 bikes including a sidecar! This threw up a problem as the planned breakfast venue was unable to cope with such a large contingent. In short order, Dave had sorted it out and we all took the La Lucia road to the Umhlanga Wimpy where breakfast was consumed.

Page 5 of 24 pages Date: 25 November 2013

Arrival at the Virginia Airport car park.

The only casualty of the day was Mike Mathews who’s newly acquired Royal Enfield Bullet was difficult to start and kept cutting out. With help from Theo, Rod and Graham he got it started and headed directly to Virginia Airport while the rest of the field went off on a short run to Sibaya.

We were allowed to tour a hangar and to view the maintenance facilities.

Page 6 of 24 pages Date: 25 November 2013

Mike's RE eventually conked out just short of Virginia and he pushed and coasted (and cursed – Ed) the rest of the way. Theo and Jill raced off to fetch the trailer while the rest of us were taken on an interesting tour of one of the hangers and a variety of planes being serviced and repaired. Fortunately, Theo and Jill returned in time to do a tour of inspection after which Mikes’ bike was loaded on the trailer and all headed for home. Twenty-five people took part in this run, with 21 bikes between them. Thanks again to Dave and Graham for planning the run and Theo together with other members who helped with Mike's RE.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CMCN breakfast run to Mid Illovo, Sunday 17 November. By Theo Alberda

As Sunday 17th November dawned it was clear we were in for a glorious sunny day. Many doubted that the planned run to the Farmers Co-op Hall in Mid Illovo would actually take place as it had rained heavily over the previous three days. Some of the contingent met at the club house at 07:30 for a prompt departure at 07:45. They met up with the rest of the gang at the old Louis Botha airport glide off to the N2 at 08:00. This section of road has been barricaded off following the closure of that airport and has plenty of room to meet and glide on safely to the freeway.

Page 7 of 24 pages Date: 25 November 2013

Graham Palmer, the main organiser of this run, did a quick count and phoned ahead to give the number to the folks at the co-op who were already hard at work preparing for our arrival. Some folks had decided to take their cars and include some family members. In total there were twenty six for breakfast – a good turnout. The initial part of the Umbumbulu road has houses on both sides of the road and is quite heavily populated, requiring that we rode with caution. Soon the houses thinned and the road opened up, much of which had been recently re-tarred. The roads allowed frequent opportunity to overtake with some great curves, straights and hills. It was motorcyclist’s dream come true.

The bikes parked on the old tennis court

Our hosts anticipated our arrival at the co-op hall and we were guided to park our bikes on the now redundant tennis courts. Just as well as the lawns were still saturated from the heavy rains. The veranda and part of the hall had been neatly laid with tables and at the far end the breakfast was being cooked.

Two of the able bodied helpers frying eggs and tomato at the far side of the veranda. The kitchen was also in full swing!

We were offered two choices - an all-up breakfast at R60 and a half-breakfast at R30. Most opted for the R30 version as that consisted of eggs, bacon, tomato, chips, fruit juice, cereal or miellie-pap and coffee or tea. Imagine what the R60 affair consisted of!

Page 8 of 24 pages Date: 25 November 2013

Following the breakfast many opted to ride to the nearby stone church, the second oldest in the area at over a hundred years. The church is situated on a hill overlooking some beautiful scenery.

Fresh apple and orange juice was on hand as we arrived.

All in all a great day was had by all. It was unanimous that we repeat the exercise sometime soon. In fact many felt that it should become at least an annual event. Great breakfast, great company, great hosts, great country scenery and most importantly some great roads to ride our motorcycles. What more do you want?

All the warmers at the ready.

Our sincere thanks to Hylton, Brenda and Mike and the other many able bodies who put in so much effort to make the day a great success. And, of course, our thanks to Graham Palmer for taking the lead and making it all possible.

There was much interest in the AA gun out front

That lovely stone church on the out skirts of Mid Illovo (some 3 Km from the farmers co-op hall).

On a lighter note, one of our members on route to the club decided to fill up his bike with petrol. Wise move! However, once the bike was full and it came to paying he discovered that he had left his wallet behind. After much negotiation the petrol attendant agreed to accept his rather expensive cell phone as collateral. Sadly the member concerned had to leave the breakfast earlier that the others and make his way home to collect his wallet so that he could settle the account and retrieve his cell. Of course we will not mention the name of this member other than to say he is a most senior member of the CMCN committee!

Other stuff: Adverts, Technical, News etc. Seeing as we have an sizeable number of Royal Enfield riders in the club, I thought this snippet from Bike EXIF would be of interest – Ed. Royal Enfield Musket V-twin Posted: 25 Nov 2013

The modern-day Royal Enfield has many charms. But a rumbling exhaust note is not one of them. And nor is the ability to smoke rubber, however gently. Ohio-based Aniket Vardhan has found a solution to this problem. There’s no substitute for cubic inches, so he’s mated two 500cc Enfield motors together to create the Musket V-Twin. It’s an extraordinary engineering achievement, and Vardhan now has a solid order book and huge backlog of email enquiries to wade through.

Page 12 of 24 pages Date: 25 November 2013

The story begins when Vardhan left his hometown of Delhi, India, in 1999—partly to take a Masters in Industrial Design, and partly to live closer to the sound of Harley-Davidson V-twins. As the years passed and he took up a teaching post, he developed his Enfield V-twin concept, first as a 700cc model and then as a 998. Vardhan describes the Musket as “a slightly ridiculous venture.” But in reality, there’s nothing ridiculous about it. Vardhan is far from your typical amateur engineer—aside from designing and blueprinting the engine, he also oversees the sand-casting of the crankcases, the machining, the assembling of all the custom parts, and even the final polishing and fitting.

More importantly, he hasn’t messed with the tried-and-test Enfield internals. Even the tappets are stock, so that vintage bike nuts can adjust them at will. The 59-degree twin is as simple and strong as the Bullet 500 single built in the Chennai, India factory.

The result is well beyond a factory level of finish, as you can see from our exclusive images. Just check the copper oil lines and the beautifully assembled exhaust system. The modified frame is also in keeping with the vintage style, retaining the classic single down-tube. Stop by a Musket 998 in the street, and you’d think it was an ‘official’ model. Vardhan tells the full story on the Musket V-twin website. It’s inspiring stuff and well worth a read.

SAVVA Technical Tip 72 – Replacing Brake Fluid Applicable to motorbikes too!

An article in the Sunbeam Club’s newsletter reminded me of the necessity of replacing brake fluid on a regular basis or at least every two years – something most of us shy away from because it’s a messy job. We must keep in mind that most of our older cars have single brake systems and not the dual ones of today. If anything goes wrong with the single braking system then one is in the proverbial poo! It’s therefore imperative that we keep these systems in 100% order. The experts say that brake fluid boils at 290° C but when contaminated with water it will boil at 150° C making braking ineffective. To quote the Sunbeam Club article: “We must keep in mind that brake fluid is hygroscopic and absorbs water – the water turns to steam under heavy braking and who wants steam in the braking system?”. We must also keep in mind that some of our older cars weigh a ton or two and capable of fairly high speeds. To stop them we are relying on some bits of rubber and brake fluid. Recently I was replacing the brake system on a typical English sports car and the brake fluid that came out was a delicate shade of brown and noticeably full of condensation. Unfortunately, when it came to dismantling the brake and clutch and wheel cylinders it was found they were badly corroded and past their use-by date simply because of the water ingress over the years. The cost of replacing these cylinders was mind blowing – never mind the work involved. All this would have been unnecessary if the brake fluid had been changed on a fairly regular basis at a cost of +/- R20.00 a bottle. Considering the cost of a bottle of brake fluid - is it worth the risk? We could use the fact that it’s a two man job replacing the fluid but that’s an excuse and not true anymore. All the parts shops have “one man” brake/clutch bleeding bottles available for a few rand.

You know you’re in Africa when…

Who was who in 1923 and what became of them In 1923, who was: 1. President of the largest steel company? 2. President of the largest gas company? 3. President of the New York stock Exchange? 4. The greatest wheat speculator? 5. President of the Bank of International Settlement? 6. The Great Bear of Wall Street? These men were considered some of the worlds’ most successful of their day. Now, 88 years later, the history book asks us if we know what ultimately became of them. The Answers: 1. The president of the largest steel company. Charles Schwab, died a pauper. 2. The president of the largest gas company, Edward Hopson, went insane. 3. The president of the NYSE, Richard Whitney, was released from prison to die at home. 4. The greatest wheat speculator, Arthur Cooger, died abroad, penniless. 5. The president of the Bank of International Settlement shot himself. 6 The Great Bear of Wall Street Cosabee Livermore, also committed suicide

However, In that same year, 1923, the winner of the worlds’ most important road race, the Isle of Man TT was Stanley Woods. What became of him? He won 10 TT races between 1923 and 1939, He lived on the Isle of Man and rode motorcycles all his life. He lapped the island circuit at 82 mph in 1957 (The Golden Jubilee) aged 54 He was a wealthy man when he died aged 90.

The Moral: Don’t work. Ride motorbikes.
