Classification of Matter

The substance of which all physical objects are made

Pure Substances

Pure substances are either elements or compounds

Cannot be broken down into simpler components

Element Compound

Elements

When all the atoms in a substance are alike

There are 90 elements found in nature

More than 20 others have been made in labs

Here are some you may recognize

Page 4: Classification of Matter The substance of which all physical objects are made

Oxygen, O2

Page 5: Classification of Matter The substance of which all physical objects are made

Mercury, Hg

Page 6: Classification of Matter The substance of which all physical objects are made

Compounds

When two or more elements combine

Have a fixed proportion

ex. Na(s) + Cl(g) NaCl(s) table salt

Page 7: Classification of Matter The substance of which all physical objects are made

Compound or Element?

Page 8: Classification of Matter The substance of which all physical objects are made

Mixtures

Material made up of two or more substances that can be separated

Review: What is a substance?- an element or compound in its simplest form

Here are just a few examples;

PIZZA!!!!!!

COOKIES!!!!!

Heterogeneous v. Homogeneous

Heterogeneous - a mixture which different materials can be easily

distinguishedEx. Granite, concrete, PIZZA!!!!!!!

Homogeneous- a mixture containing two or more substances blended evenly throughoute

Ex. Soft drinks, Vinegar, Coffee

What is a Solution?

A solution is…..

• A homogeneous mixture of particles,

• A mixture that remains uniformly mixed,

Page 13: Classification of Matter The substance of which all physical objects are made

Colloids

Types of mixtures that never settle

Contain larger particles than solutions

Ex. Glue, Paint, Fog, Smoke, etc…

Page 14: Classification of Matter The substance of which all physical objects are made

Suspensions

A heterogeneous mixture containing a liquid in which visible particles settle

They are neither solutions nor colloids

Ex. Muddy pond water
