I intend to create an environment where students feel welcome and all are treated fairly. My goal is to develop fair classroom rules and to maintain consistency in discipline from the first day of school until the last day. I will strive to be an encouragement to the students by being a positive role model and praise when it is appropriate. Interaction between myself, parents, and students will always be encouraged and highly supported. Calls home will be activated when students either seriously misbehave or highly achieve. I expect to gain a level of trust and confidence with my students that cannot easily be broken. I am determined to have a class where learning takes place with very little disciplinary disruptions since rules and procedures are well understood and practiced. Each and every student will be important and I will strive to make every moment in my classroom count individually and educationally. Special care will be taken to develop character and integrity for a life time.

Rules

Page 5: Classroom management plan power point

My Classroom Rules1. Follow directions the first time they

are given.2. Raise your hand and wait until you

have permission to speak.3. Keep your hands and feet to yourself.4. Stay in your seat unless you are

granted permission to do otherwise.5. No teasing or swearing.

Page 6: Classroom management plan power point

My plan for collaborating with students to establish the rules:

Discuss the need for rules with students. Explain that rules ensure equal opportunities

to speak and be heard. They also ensure safety and respect for all students.

Allow students to suggest possible rules for the classroom.

Discuss why the rules are necessary and why they would help the classroom run more smoothly.

Write the rules down on a poster and display them in the classroom in a couple of places as daily reminders.

Page 7: Classroom management plan power point

My plan for teaching the rules for understanding and compliance:

The rules will be discussed on the first day of school. Expectations will be modeled and reinforced and retold so

students can see and understand what is expected. Students will be prompted or cued to remember the expectations. Students who follow the rules will immediately be praised. Students who do not follow the rules will be gently reminded of

the correct expectation the first time (at the beginning of the year), however, noncompliance thereafter will result in previously planned and posted consequences.

I will consistently enforce the rules by moving through the hierarchy system.

Students will receive a copy of the rules to place in their possession, as well as a copy to take home for both parents and student to sign as an agreement or contract between the teacher, student, and parents.

Page 8: Classroom management plan power point

My plan for meeting the standard of adequate notice:

Discussion of the rules and consequences will be accomplished on the first day of school.

The rules and consequences will be posted in a couple of places in the classroom as continual reminders to the students.

A contract letter will be sent home on the first day of school for the parents and student to read and sign. *An example of the letter is provided on the following slide.

To: The parents of From: Mrs. BakerSubject: Classroom Rules

Let me welcome you and your child to the (#) grade. As your child's teacher, I look forward to working with you throughout this school year. Together, we can make this a great year. In order to carry out the programs of the district and school, it is important that we have good classroom discipline. Therefore, I am using this method to inform my students and their parents of the rules and consequences we will use for the remainder of the school year. Those rules and consequences can be found below. Rules1. Follow directions the first time they are given.2. Raise your hand and wait until you have permission to speak.3. Keep your hands and feet to yourself.4. Stay in your seat unless you are granted to do otherwise.5. No teasing or swearing. Consequences:Name recorded ……………….…… WarningName checked 1x ……………….. Parents and the office will be notified when the teacher feels it is necessary to do so in order to maintain positive classroom discipline. I hope that you will take a few minutes from your busy schedule to discuss the need for good discipline with your child. Learning can only be accomplished appropriately in a well-disciplined classroom. Your help is greatly appreciated.  Please return to me by: (date) ___________________ Student signature: _____________________________ Parent signature: _______________________________

Part Three:Discipline Measures

Page 11: Classroom management plan power point

My Preventative Discipline Measures

I will strive to make lessons engaging for the students in order to further student involvement in learning and to reduce the opportunity for misbehavior. If students are interested and actively engaged in what they are learning, there will be little time or no time for messing around.

I will arrange the classroom in such a way that students can easily get the most out of the accomplishment of their tasks, and where very little behavioral problems can develop. The seating arrangements will be advantageous for communication for all activities. The desks will be placed to allow the teacher and students to move freely.

I will be in contact with the students’ parents by sending home a copy of the classroom rules to be signed and returned. Phone calls will be made to report student success, and periodic reports will be sent home to summarize the students’ progress in class.

Procedures, routines, and rules will be in place so students will know and understand exactly what is expected of them. This will provide a sense of security and comfort in the boundaries that have been set for them. The class will understand that when the rules are broken, consequences will be applied fairly and consistently.

Page 12: Classroom management plan power point

Preventative Measures (Continued)

I will be at the door to greet the students as they enter my classroom. A bell assignment will be prepared for them to begin immediately with the intention of helping the students focus and prepare for the upcoming lesson. It also stimulates good behavior due to involvement in the activity.

I will be well organized and prepared before beginning the school day to eliminate any opportunities for misbehavior with wasted time.

My methods for teaching will be varied in order to maintain interest and reduce boredom from setting in.

I will reach clear understandings with my students about appropriate class conduct.

I will be the best role model I can be by showing concern, etiquette, courtesy, and helpfulness.

The classroom will be clean and neatly organized. It will be attractively and appropriately decorated, but without distracting features.

I will be dressed appropriately to gain respect from the students, and to avoid being a distraction.

I will take role quickly and quietly while students are engaged in their assignment without any disturbances.

Page 13: Classroom management plan power point

My Supportive Discipline Measures

I will help students discipline themselves by means of permitting them to formulate and agree upon their own classroom rules and consequences.

I will use eye contact, physical proximity, facial expressions, hand signals, and gestures to allow students the opportunity to change their own behavior before utilizing consequences.

I will restructure difficult work by changing the activity or provide help. I will remove any distracting items or objects (I will return them later). I will strive to put humor into lessons that have become boring or tiring. I will show interest in the students’ work by asking cheerful questions or

making favorable comments. I will acknowledge good behavior in a suitable manner at the proper

time. I will use hints and suggestions when I notice students drifting toward

misbehavior. A verbal reminder of rules and consequences may be necessary, and all

that is needed to stop student misbehavior.

Page 14: Classroom management plan power point

My Corrective Discipline Measures

I will stop disruptive behavior. It is best that it is not ignored. I will talk to the student who is misbehaving or place a consequence that

is appropriate to the misbehavior in accordance with the class rules. I will remain calm, but speak in a straightforward manner. I will follow through quickly and consistently on the promised

consequences so as not to waste precious class time. I will try to redirect the misbehavior in a positive direction. If it is necessary, I will talk privately to the student about the

misbehavior, and ask if I can assist in any way. The privacy may enhance the possibility of a constructive discussion and prevent confrontation in front of the class making the teacher appear weak.

I will make it clear to the student that he made the choice to misbehave and therefore, must suffer the consequence.

I will communicate with parents concerning any problems that have developed with their child in the classroom. I will also share suggestions of reinforcing disciplinary measures that can be utilized at home.

If it is necessary, I will send the child to the principal’s office for extreme neglect of compliance to classroom rules.

Another Discipline SystemThe Card System

For years, teachers have been successfully using a card system of discipline that encourages students to take an active part in classroom management. Here is what is needed to get started:

5 note cards per student (1 each in green, yellow, red, purple and orange) Pocket chart with a pocket designated for each student List of classroom rules Behavior Reminder Chart (to be displayed in the classroom) Students will have a pack of 5 cards which will be displayed in the pocket chart that has been

placed in a prominent position within the classroom. The cards should be labeled in the following manner and placed in the pockets of the chart (5 cards per student) so that the writing can still be read:

Green – Draw a large, smiling face at the top with the words “You are doing great!” written underneath.

Yellow – The word “Caution” should be written at the top, with the words “You have my warning” written below.

Red – The word “Stop” should be written at the top, with the words “Your parent(s) will be notified” written below.

Purple – The words “Lose Privileges” should be written at the top, with a list of potential privileges to be lost written below. These privileges may include a loss of recess time or an inability to participate in special classroom activities like a good behavior reward party.

Orange – The words “Severe Clause” should be written at the top, with the words “Go to Principal” and “Parent(s) will be phoned immediately” written below.

Page 17: Classroom management plan power point

Discipline System (Continued)The Procedure

Students begin each day with their green card at the front of the pack. Since the cards are prominently displayed, your students will be well-aware of the fact that they are "doing great." The first time a disruption occurs, the child should be given a verbal reminder of whatever negative behavior they are exhibiting, the classroom rule that corresponds, and the positive behavior you would like him/her to exhibit instead. The student should also be told what the next step will be should they choose to continue the negative behavior. In this case, the next step would be "flipping" their behavior card to the next one in the pack.

This procedure will continue, with each infraction or disruption causing more significant punishments as laid out by what has already been written on the cards. The one exception would be the orange card - or the "Severe Clause". The Severe Clause is available when the disruption or infraction is significant or dangerous - either to the student or to others in the classroom. Examples might include throwing a pair of scissors, fighting, or foul language. In this case, the student does not receive a warning or loss of privilege. Instead, they are sent directly to the principal's office and the parents are phoned immediately.

A Visual Cue The card system serves as a visual cue for students to monitor their own behavior and

progress through out the day. For this reason, you will want to display the list of consequences as a constant reminder.

1st time Teacher gives verbal reminder2nd time Teacher gives a verbal warning - student flips to the yellow card (This is a reminder to

the student that he or she must make a change in their behavior.)3rd time Note sent home to parent - student flips to the red card4th time Student loses a privilege - student flips to the purple card5th time Student is sent to Principal; parents are phoned immediately - student flips to orange

My Plan for Demonstrating a Reasonable Standard of Care

I will record details of all instances of extreme misbehavior and share them with parents and principal.

I will record details of all instances of injury and share them with the parents and principal.

I will send an injured or sick child to the school nurse for assistance. I will also call the parents with an explanation of what is going on, and to ask them to pick their child up. I will never dispense any medication.

I will keep record of any children who require medication at school with signatures from parents. I will remind these students to take their medication.

I will never provide transportation for any of my students and only allow them to use the type of transportation or method of going home previously approved by parents.

If I am alone in the classroom with a student, I will leave the door open or go in the hallway with them to avoid false accusation.

I will keep detailed and up-to-date grade books for quick reference. I will maintain a well managed classroom with procedures, rules, and

consequences so students have no questions concerning expectations when the teacher is not available at any given moment.

Page 19: Classroom management plan power point

Reasonable Standard of Care Demonstrated (Continued)

I will never leave the classroom unattended. I will have procedures posted within the classroom concerning the proper course

of action to take when a fire, tornado, or any other catastrophic event erupts. Periodical practice of these procedures will take place so students can gain an

understanding of what to do and where to go during these emergency situations. I will have the routes or procedures memorized to avoid confusion.

I will be sure that careful supervision is maintained on the playground, in the gym, the cafeteria and any other place students may be during a school day.

Careful procedures will be enforced and followed before and after school ensuring safety in the presence of strangers and moving vehicles.

All videos, DVD’s, and other forms of media will be reviewed before presentation to the class to ensure purity, decency, and wholesomeness.

I will be careful to maintain appropriate behavior and privacy without touching my students. No accusation could be brought forth of inappropriate conduct as long as no physical contact is made.

I will keep all information regarding the students and their families to myself guaranteeing their safety and privacy.

All records and papers involving students will be stored in a location that is unavailable for others to view. It will be kept private.

Page 20: Classroom management plan power point

Part Four:My Way of

Maintaining a Positive Classroom Climate

Page 21: Classroom management plan power point

What I will do to establish and maintain a positive climate

I will have rules and procedures in place that students easily understand and can follow.

These procedures and rules will be taught, modeled, and re-taught at the beginning of the year so students clearly understand what is expected from them.

I will keep students involved by creating interest in the subject matter and circulating around the room as they accomplish tasks ready to provide assistance, as well as positive and constructive feedback.

I will be aware of everything that is going on in my classroom at all times. When students realize I know what is going on all the time, they will be less likely to misbehave.

I will deal with discipline problems promptly following the chain of consequences previously chosen.

I will remain cheerful and enthusiastic before the students on a daily basis. I will remain calm, but firm, not allowing my emotions to get the best of me during

times of confrontation or discipline with a student. I will interact with students both in and out of class in order to gain confidence and a

relationship that is profitable and lasting. I will not tolerate continual acts of misbehavior without the enforcement of

consequences. I will reward students with praise as they achieve and behave properly. Fun activities will be rewarded as the class accomplishes good behavior over a

length of time.

Page 22: Classroom management plan power point

A rationale for my choices

I believe that if I intertwine all of these factors into my classroom, the students will gain beneficial learning, positive behavioral results will prevail, and relational connectivity will supersede any other methods of teaching.

Students will quickly realize whether the teacher is in the classroom to teach for learning while expecting positive results, or if she is only present to accomplish a job through her demeanor and expectations she requires while in the classroom.

A teacher who is serious about her expectations will seek ways to develop constructive learning and accomplishment in the classroom.

Page 23: Classroom management plan power point

Part Five:My Management Goals as

a Teacher

Page 24: Classroom management plan power point

Three Goals

The students in my classroom are continuously showing evidence of learning due to a class that is diligent, relaxed, pleasant, and managed well.

Students understand what is expected of them and are by and large successful because they have been taught, have practiced, experienced, and observed enforcement of the rules, routines, and expectations of the class.

The class flows smoothly from day to day with little disruptions, confusion, or wasted time. The teacher is well-prepared, organized, and includes a plan of action for every area of classroom management from the arrangement of the classroom to preventative, supportive, and corrective disciplinary measures to the creation of an upbeat and positive classroom where students desire to learn and excel.

Page 25: Classroom management plan power point

Rationale for my Goals

I will have a well managed classroom as a result of accomplishing these three goals. Without them, I will be an ineffective teacher with little or no success!
