Ark Group’s 10th Annual

WOMEN LEGAL 2017 Illustrating the business imperative for the advancement, retention and succession of female leadership in the legal profession - while identifying opportunities to open up business dialogues and make useful connections

Does it always have to begin with rainmaking and holding a sizable book of business? What does the path to leadership look like (within law) for women, specifically? And to what extent might the next generation of leadership bridge the gender gap and change the dynamics that have negatively impacted the retention and advancement of women in law?

Mentoring programs, affinity groups, and flex-time policies that lack cultural support are not moving the diversity needle forward. To successfully change the legal diversity landscape, innovation is key.

There have been a number of recent studies that support the assertion that diversity and inclusion represent a significant competitive advantage – from corporate America and the Fortune 500 to the legal profession itself. Is the business imperative for gender and racial diversity undeniable? And if so, why then are law firms lagging so far behind?

Ark Group’s 10th annual Women Legal conference will once again provide an ideal platform for the exchange of ideas and experiential wisdom as we collectively address the primary obstacles, challenges and opportunities that exist concerning the promotion, retention, and succession of female leadership—as well as identify opportunities to open up business dialogues and make useful connections—turning strategic relationships into mentors, sponsors and clients!

Attendees of this year’s conference will learn how a combination of culture, innovation and knowledge-sharing can boost and sustain diversity throughout the ranks of your organization. Featuring candid viewpoints from both the law firm perspective, as well as that of the client—this year’s conference will address:

The Profitability of Gender Diversity and Inclusion Different Paths to Leadership for Women in Law Firms Professional Development as a Business Imperative for Law Firms Developing a Healthy Appetite for Risk in Your Career Personal Interests and Strengths as Rainmaking Strategies Power: What Is It? How to Get It and How to Use it! Thinking Like Google: Using Innovation Techniques to Boost Diversity New Strategies For Advancing Inclusiveness Through Talent Management

...attendees will also learn about the inaugural 2016 Women in Law Hackathon and the immediate positive outcomes that came from having 54 high-level leaders from the world’s top firms working together to “hack the glass ceiling.”

Join your peers this February in San Francisco, as we re-imagine our approach, stimulate thinking about what’s important, and build momentum towards collective action and impact!

9:15AM KEYNOTE ADDRESS Think Like Google: Using Innovation Techniques to Boost Diversity Mentoring programs, affinity groups, and flex-time policies that lack cultural support are not moving the diversity needle forward. To successfully change the legal diversity landscape, innovation is key. In this opening/keynote session, attendees will learn how to create a culture of innovation and knowledge-sharing to boost and sustain diversity throughout the ranks of your organization. As part of the session, attendees will learn about the first-ever Women in Law Hackathon and the immediate positive outcomes that came from having 54 high-level leaders from the world’s top firms working together to “hack the glass ceiling.”

Caren Ulrich Stacy, Creator of Diversity Lab & OnRamp Fellowship

10:00AM TED-STYLE TALK Developing a Healthy Appetite for Risk in Your Career Research increasingly supports the value of risk and failure to gain greater success. But how do you build up a tolerance for taking calculated risks? How do you confront your fear of failure that is preventing you from taking action? During this session, attendees will learn how to anticipate fallout, confront the worst possible scenario and focus on resiliency as a means to propel you forward. You will hear about triggering events that can give you the courage to finally make a change. Or, how taking small steps and recognizing that day-to-day failures are a part of life will give you the confidence to dream bigger and pursue more. We will delve into how to strike the elusive balance of pushing yourself out of your com-fort zone while not being reckless. Through personal anecdotes and candid conversation, attendees will leave this session inspired to confront what you are most afraid of, consider what is needed to overcome your reservations and determine the necessary steps to take strategic risks and reap the rewards.

10:25AM Morning Coffee Break

10:45AM TED-STYLE TALK Is Professional Development a Business Imperative for Law Firms? Most lawyers in firms define success based on their compensation. And since most compensation systems are tied to books of business, it follows that business defines success. So what should law firms do to ensure that the lawyers coming up through the ranks are going to be successful? Many firms would respond that they need to train women and minorities, in particular, on business development and provide them with mentors. Yet firms have been doing that for years and the numbers of women and minorities in the highest rainmaking ranks at large firms has not changed. Furthermore, the next generation of lawyers entering the law firm workforce expect training, but they also expect results. The days of simply checking the box on efforts to diversify the highest ranks of our firms are gone. In this talk, we will explore the missing link in law firm responses to the lack of women (and minorities) in significant position of institutional and economic power: focusing on how to uncover and address the root causes of the problems the training and mentoring programs were designed to correct.

Patricia K. Gillette, Public Keynote Speaker and Member of JAMS

11:10AM TED-STYLE TALK Personal Interests and Strengths as Rainmaking Strategies Yes, there are alternatives to the “way it’s always been done.” In a largely male-dominated profession—where many senior partners have developed business by playing golf or taking their clients out for cigars and steaks—there also exists different, less obvious pathways to developing a book of business based on personal interests and strengths. This case study will shine a light on how one successful (female) partner developed a variety of thoughtful and distinctive ways to develop business—particularly with women in-house counsel. From hosting book clubs and wine tastings to private dinners and teas, attendees will learn about the many creative ways this female Rainmaker opened up business dialogues relative to some of the year’s most popular business topics—including disruptive technology, managing change and leaning in. Women also invest heavily in developing personal relationships with clients—and in a manner that goes well beyond business lives. Attendees will learn how these strategies not only enable the development of a strong professional network, but also make it rain!

Audra Dial, Managing Partner, Atlanta office, Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP

11:35AM TED-STYLE TALK Getting Inclusive About Inclusion: A New Strategy For Advancing Inclusiveness Through Talent Management Traditional efforts to advance diversity and inclusion within law firms (and legal departments) have stalled. It is time for a new strategy--one that gets inclusive about inclusion by intentionally embedding efforts to advance inclusiveness directly into the daily operations and culture of your firm. During this session, you will learn how to leverage your firm’s talent development (training, career advising, competencies), talent deployment (assignments) and performance management (promotion, advancement, compensation) activities to create a powerful platform for advancing inclusiveness. Attendees will also learn about the “4Ms”—specific actions you can take to drive this strategy and achieve support and buy-in from all your colleagues.

12:00PM Networking Luncheon

1:00PM TED-STYLE TALK Power: What Is It? How to Get It — and How to Use it! We can actually feel the impact of people who have personal power. It shows up like confidence, calm, determination. They are people who command respect and are listened to when they talk. Oftentimes, that package of power comes in the form of a man. What does personal power look like, sound like and feel like when it comes in the form of a woman? How do women 'get' personal power? Is it created by nature or nurture? And finally, if a woman has it and can sustain it, how does she use it for herself and the world?

2:35PM PANEL DISCUSSION The Profitability of Gender Diversity and Inclusion There have been a number of recent studies that support the assertion that diversity and inclusion represent a significant competitive advantage – from cor-porate America and the Fortune 500 to the legal profession itself. Is the business imperative for gender and racial diversity undeniable? And if so, why then are law firms lagging so far behind? Many Fortune 500 companies require their network of law firms to engage in diversity best practices because evidence supports that diversity practices are a sign of a well-managed company—not to mention the fact that women make up almost half of the U.S. workforce and are assuming greater leadership roles in corporations across the board. This engaging panel discussion will feature candid viewpoints from both the law firm perspective—as well as that of the client—as we assess the potential for synergistic, financial competitive advantage that diversity and inclusion represent for law firms.

Naomi B. Waltman, Esq., Senior Vice President & Associate General Counsel, CBS, Isabella Fu, Associate General Counsel, Microsoft Corporation, Seth Aronson, Partner, O'Melveny & Myers LLP — Moderator: Patricia Gillette, Public Keynote Speaker and Member of JAMS

3:25PM PANEL DISCUSSION Different Paths to Leadership for Women in Law Firms Does it always have to begin with rainmaking and holding a sizable book of business? What does the path to leadership within law look like for women, spe-cifically? This lively discussion will showcase the journeys of several women in positions of leadership and influence within their respective firms, and what these different paths to leadership entailed—identifying some of the challenges and obstacles along this path – as well as the key characteristics/aspects/drivers that kept them moving forward professionally in a male-dominated environment.

Kathryn J. Fritz, Managing Partner, Fenwick & West LLP, Cristina A. Carvalho, Managing Partner, Arent Fox LLP, Susan S. Brewer, Chief Executive Officer/Managing Partner, Steptoe & Johnson PLLC — Moderator: Patricia Gillette, Public Keynote Speaker and Member of JAMS
