We are often asked for our recommendations for various cleaning applications, especially BOD glassware. The first source to consult is Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater (current approved edition in your State). Specific instructions are given for some tests, such as cleaning glassware and sample containers used for Phosphorus and trace metals analysis, and these recommendations must be followed. It is up to each technician to determine the best cleaning method for each test in his or her lab. For general labware cleaning, including BOD labware, we offer the following recommendations.

1. Do not allow the soil to dry onto the labware in the first place. Clean items immediately. If this is not possible or practical, keep the items wet by filling them with hot tap water or soaking them in hot tap water containing a mild detergent.

2. Use the mildest cleaning agent which will do the job. There are many good reasons for using the weakest cleaner that works:

✓ From a personal safety standpoint, the weakest is the safest to handle

✓ The weakest usually causes the fewest (or no) disposal problems

✓ The stronger the cleaner, the more rinsing is required to remove all traces, and the greater the consequences of not removing all traces

✓ As a rule, the stronger the cleaner, the greater the cost

3. If all else fails, throw the glassware on the floor. Tell your supervisor someone dropped it and order replacements.

PIPET CLEANING SETPipet washer/rinser is constructed of high-density polyethylene. Operates with water input from 11/2 to 12 liters per minute without “siphon-stall”. When there’s a drop in water pressure, water inlet at top eliminates the risk of back-siphoning contaminated water into the water line. Tubing for both inlet and outlet is provided with each unit, ready for immediate installation. Overall height is 38”.

Basket is 51/4” OD by 303/4” high (including handle), HDPE, rugged, but resilient to cushion pipets. It has a perforated screen which is recessed into base 3/4” for complete drainage.

The pipet soak jar is tough, stiff, seamless and resists stress-cracking. Ideal for soaking glassware, washing pipets with corresponding Thermo Scientific™ Nalgene™ rinsers and baskets. Flanged base for added stability. Makes excellent large general purpose container and comes with dust covers. Dimensions: 61/2” OD x 27” high. Caution: Concentrated sulfuric acid will cause pipet jar to fail.
