Where hAs summer gone so quickly? It seems that Memorial Day, the traditional start of summer in New England, was just yesterday. As we approach August, the Board of Direc-tors is once again planning to shut down our club facilities for a week. Our major project is replacing two of our very large walk-in refrigeration units in the kitchen. They are way beyond their useful life but have served us well through the years. Our refrigeration is very important for food quality and safety. While the club is closed, we do have a reciprocal agreement with the Carlouel Yacht Club and Belleair Country Club for dining.

We continued our “giving back” program in July with a very successful field trip day at CYC for 20 children from Homeless Empowerment Program (HEP). The children spent a day at the club enjoying pool activi-ties, a ride on the water aboard the Clearwater Marine Aquarium’s Sea Safari boat and a wonderful cookout on the deck. Thanks to everyone who contributed financially to help with our guests’ school supplies, backpacks and uniforms. I am grateful as well to each of you who volunteered, making this a great experience for the children.

Exciting news! Our CYC membership continues to increase. This month we reached 504 members—the highest number we’ve seen for some time. I hope you are continuing to enjoy our wonderful yacht club and thank you for all you do to make it a success.

See you around the club!

CommodorePhil Beauchamp

BrING OuT The ChAmPAGNe! LeT’s PArTY! Why? Membership

has topped the 500 mark—for the first time in many years. As promised, we will cel-ebrate with a BANG (Tom, get your cannon ready)!

Yes, summer has been hot (and not just the weather). We have been very

busy signing up new members! A HUGE thanks to each of you for spreading the word that CYC is an awesome place to “hang out” and great value! Let’s continue the trend. It’s not too late to take a trial run of the club with a summer membership. All current summer members—we have a deal for you! Any monthly summer dues paid will be applied to the initiation fee when you become a full member.

Don’t forget that CYC is the perfect place to have a private party—whether a birthday celebration or a work social. I personally have hosted several get-togethers, brunches and retirement parties here at CYC and re-ceived fantastic feedback from my guests.

If you ever have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. Also, think about joining the Membership Committee. We meet the first Wednesday of every month in the Board Room.

Until then, check your Constant Contact emails for specifics on our 500 Celebration to follow.

PC OdeY O’dONNeLLInterview by Bob GriffinFrANCIs (OdeY) O’dONNeLL was 22 when he was sent to Europe to fight in World War II. That was

76 years ago in 1943. Now Odey lives a much quieter life in Belleair with his wife Lois.

After high school Odey attended the Citadel in Charleston before war broke out. He aspired

to be a pilot and became a cadet in flight training. To his dismay, he was discharged for “reckless flying”— something about flying his plane upside down. “My Com-mander said he was going to ‘save my ass’ by discharging me now,” Odey remembers.

Afterward he signed up with the Army Air Force, attending bombardier/navigation school. When “the brass” discovered he had been discharged from the Navy, he had to accept the role of navigator, training on B-24 bombers.

Afterward Odey was deployed to North Africa where the action was. He then joined the 15th Air Force Squadron, based in Italy. He dropped bombs over the South of France before transferring to a unit where he worked side by side with the British on B-17s and B-24s, which were painted black to secretly bring supplies—food, guns, ammo and personnel. “We carried an array of people, from OSS to spies,” he adds. All in

all, Odey flew 52 missions before leaving Europe in 1945.He reunited with his high school sweetheart when he re-

turned home, graduated from Providence College and began a career in medical sales. When the Korean War broke out in

1951, Odey was recalled to the reserves. He and his wife were married 21 years

and had seven children before parting ways. He married his current wife Lois in 1974. They lived in Connecticut but often vacationed here on Clearwater Beach. One day they decided to make it their home.

Upon retirement Odey and Lois joined Clearwater Yacht Club, enjoying boating and social events. He served as Commodore 1994-95. Lois became president of the Gulls and was a charter member of the Bow Chasers. They still drop by CYC, most recently to celebrate July 4th.

Odey, now 98, flew to Washington June 12 on the Honor Flight to see the World War II Memorial for the first time. He was the oldest veteran on board. “Taking the Honor Flight with 66 other vets was indeed an ‘honor’ for me. I am grateful to have the opportunity to visit all the memorials and proud to be a vet,” says Odey.

He will also be honored at the August 16 Tampa Bay Buc-caneers game.

Each of us owes PC Francis (Odey) O’Donnell and the other veterans of World War II—living and not—a big salute.

1945 Odey is front row center

By Greg Garner, Vice Commodore

HOuSE and GROuNDSAs We rOLL into August and look at the backside of another year, I thought it would be appropriate to review what your House and Grounds committee has been able to accomplish for the club.

l The year began with Jack France harvesting pavers and the creation of our new outdoor dance floor (a floor the Entertainment commit tee has made great use of!) l Shortly after completing that project, the new phone system, dockside cable and new Wi-Fi were installed. Granted, we’re still tweaking the Wi-Fi, but most comments have been positive. l The Tiki bar has received a new coat of paint. In addition, the entire inside of the hut has had the scratches and dings touched up. l A new icemaker was installed for the Tiki barl Umbrellas have been replaced around the pool area. l New fire doors on both sides of the kitchen have been installed; we are now compliant with all fire codes. l Preparations have been going on behind the scenes to prepare for the installation of new walk-ins. Tom has been coordinating all the players necessary to complete this major project.

We are still planning on closing the club August 19 and re-opening for dinner Tuesday, August 27. During that period, we’ll be using available staff and volun-teers to complete numerous small projects around the club. The kitchen will, of course, be closed, but, depending on construction disruption, the Tiki Bar will be open most days during the installation.

Members are welcome and encouraged to come by with their own food to enjoy poolside and in the Tiki area. As an added treat, the entertainment committee has ar-ranged for a food truck and music on Friday, August 23. During all this we are also moving forward with landscap-ing the entry and front areas of our building. In addition, we are pricing additional tables and chairs for the Tiki and pool areas. We are also obtaining bids to replace our aging steamer and slicer in the kitchen. We hope to have these installed by the re-opening so that Chef John can dazzle us with new and delicious menu creations.

House & Grounds meets at 6:00 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month. Come and be a part of the love that goes into taking care of our “Lady” and her members.

rOCK The ruNWAY! Ladies and Gentlemen, be sure to join us August 10 for a first of its kind summer chic fashion show, featuring men’s and women’s clothing from the Shoppes at Sand Key.

Guys, you know you love those shirts and shorts at Poolside for Men, so come and see your favorite CYC mod-els in clothes you can’t resist. Enjoy an evening of air-conditioned comfort that starts with drink specials and hors d’oeuvres in the Grille and then features dinner, a fashion show and dancing.

If that’s not enough to convince you to Rock the Runway, come see our soon-to-be-famous CYC models. Johnny and Phyllis Car-dosi, Collin and Abbey Heimensen, Jim and Jeni Donnell, Jamie Patchett and Olivia Prince will put the chic in summer chic. For the icing on the cake, our own DJ Paul Greenhalgh will be spinning the tunes that make us want to get up and dance.

One of our club’s finest traditions is the summer White Party. Yes, everyone really does dress in all white clothing while sipping their favorite adult beverages and listening to excellent music on the Tiki deck. Be sure to make your reservations for this lovely event that will be held August 17.

Another important CYC tradition is the Employee Turnabout Party. August 25 is your chance to show our terrific employees just how much you appreciate them. Sign up to bring your favorite dish and help serve our superb staff.

Are you already going through withdrawal knowing that the club will be shut down for a week while important kitchen renovations are being done? Fear not, August 23 we are having a special event on the Tiki deck—Food Truck Friday will feature Razzi’s Food Truck for your dining enjoyment. Of course, we will have music, too.

The last day of August brings a new event to CYC. Jim and Kathleen Hannigan are hosting a College Football Kickoff Party. Don your finest fan gear to let everyone know your favorite team. When the Hannigans host, you know it will be a great event.

Wow!—July was another month of non-stop fun. The Magic Show and Dinghy Poker Run were both a blast. Member Jim Donell was a hit at Smooth Jazz Sunday. Both the Tasting Party and our first CYC Triathlon were successful. Beach favorite Cutty Jones may well become a CYC regular.

Let’s make August even more memorable than July!

IT hAs BeeN a fun summer!!! In the last few weeks, we have had some exciting sailing. Our seasoned sailors participated in Introduction to Small Boat Racing, learning about boat handling skills, race tactics and rules. They were fortunate to get valuable experience sailing race courses us-ing Prams, Optimists, Sunfish and 420s.

Our second youth sailing program was full of fun and learn-ing. We were able to get out on the water every day--even

with the frequent storms. Time on land during storms was spent doing sailing activities, games and puzzles, playing “sail-ing” Jeopardy, watching movies and having fun. Our advanced sailing session gave our intrepid sailors the opportunity to spend additional time on the water, refining their sailing skills and learning a bit about racing.

The second Monday of each two-week session has been “Pizza Day!” Thanks to a generous donation, we were able to bring pizza in for the sailors and leaders to enjoy while relax-ing, socializing and recounting their morning on the water.

Many thanks to our great adult volunteers and junior leaders who gave their time and energy to ensure we had another successful summer sailing season. IRFSA is a volunteer-run organization. We are always looking for more volunteers to help with sailing, assist with our annual Sail-A-Thon or help guide the program by joining a committee or serving as a board member.

Our fall schedule will include after-school youth sailing class as well as weekend adult and youth sailing lessons.

NOW ThAT We have had time to re-cover from our long trip to the Keys, we are ready to get back into high gear and start cruising again. Our next outing was a short trip to the Tampa Yacht Club August 22-25. Unfortunately, there was an accident that took out much of the electricity to TYC’s docks. As a result, plans for another destination are in the process.

September’s big event, with a current count of 20 boats,

CYC TrIVIA: Legend Courtney Ross of Ross Yacht Sales with Dockmaster Linda Carter. Ross donated the flagpole pictured July 4, 1977…42 years ago. It was actually a sailboat mast used in several Southern Ocean Racing Conference (SORC) races.

is the Commodore’s Cruise. We will cruise to Marina Jack in Sarasota September 26-29.

After our last Cruisers meeting in July, we decided to add another cruise in October. It is tentatively scheduled to Twin Dolphins Marina in Bradenton to wrap up cruising before our end of the year party.

Please remember that we are always looking to add new mem-bers to our happy group. You don’t have to own a boat; all you have to do is attend our meetings. The next Cruisers meeting is August 13 at 6:30 p.m. Please join us and come ready for fun!
