The Holy Trinity: A Great and Wonderful Mystery

During the past thirty years or so there has been an explosion of technology regarding computers, smart phones, I-Pads and, of course, the Internet. The amount of information coming from these technological items is mind boggling. Many people, especially those who were raised with television, newspapers and radio as the main sources of information are saying today, “It’s too much for me” and they attempt to avoid the new technology (or at least deal with it minimally.) As we look at the early church, we find the disciples in a similar situation. In a very short period of time they were faced with new teachings about love that included forgiveness as well as suffering, miracles that had bread and wine becoming the Body and Blood of Christ, the crucifixion and resurrection. There was more information about who God was, about the Trinity, of which Jesus said, “would be too much for you now.” (John 16:12)

It is encouraging to know that the information about the Trinity is not forced upon the disciples. Jesus is sensitive to the fact that the disciples would easily be overwhelmed with trying to understand this great mystery. One gets the clear inference from the Scripture readings that God is not a cold, distant God but rather One who is warm, close and caring. We know and believe that God is delighted to be with humanity. In the end, the Lord tells us that He will lead us to the complete truth.

God is Father: One who watches over and guides us, creating all that lives. God is Son, Jesus: God made man, One who teaches and gives us His Body and Blood, forgiving and nurturing us. God is Holy Spirit: One who strengthens and gives us wisdom, courage and enables us to live out our faith in daily life. God is three, yet one: always loving, caring and listening.

Resources to Help Catholics Combat Racism

St. James the Apostle Parish acknowledges that we are living in very challenging times. As Archbishop Gomez, president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops wrote this week, “The killing of George Floyd was senseless and brutal, a sin that cries out to heaven for justice. How is it possible that in America, a black man’s life can be taken from him while calls for help are not answered, and his killing is recorded as it happens?” And furthermore, “We should not let it be said that George Floyd died for no reason. We should honor the sacrifice of his life by removing racism and hate from our hearts and renewing our commitment to fulfill our nation’s sacred promise — to be a beloved community of life, liberty, and equality for all.”

On their website, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has provided many helpful resources to assist us in understanding the Church’s teaching about racism, as well as to guide us in how we can renew our commitment to become a community of life, liberty, and equality for all. We invite you to visit http://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/human-life-and-dignity/racism/where you will find the full text of the most recently released statements and the pastoral letter addressing racism entitled Open Wide Our Hearts: The Enduring Call to Love, written in 2018. In addition, there are resources for parents to utilize with their children, with materials for different ages including k-8, middle school and high school.

As we listen to the cries for justice and equality from our brothers and sisters, may we join together as a community of faith to pray. Let us pray for the repose of the soul of Mr. George Floyd and all others who have lost their lives in a similar manner. Let us pray for an end to the violence in the wake of this tragedy and for the victims of the rioting. Let us pray for comfort for grieving families and friends. Finally, let each and every Catholic, regardless of their ethnicity, beg God to heal our deeply broken view of each other, as well as our deeply broken society.

Prayer to the Blessed Mother from Open Wide Our Hearts: The Enduring Call to Love

The U.S. Bishops’ pastoral letter addressing racism

Mary, friend and mother to all, through your Son,

God has found a way to unite himself to every human being,

called to be one people, sisters and brothers to each other.

We ask for your help

in calling on your Son, seeking forgiveness for the times

when we have failed to love and respect one another.

We ask for your help

in obtaining from your Son the grace we need

to overcome the evil of racism and to build a just society.

We ask for your help in following your Son,

so that prejudice and animosity will no longer infect our minds or hearts

but will be replaced with a love that respects the dignity of each person.

Mother of the Church,

the Spirit of your Son Jesus warms our hearts:

pray for us.

AMEN.

Father’s Day Cards for Charity

Thank you for your support of the Project Love cards for Mother’s Day. Now we are offering cards for Father’s Day. Project Love is a program of Illinois Right to Life. Our mission is to provide grants to pregnant women and new mothers who are in a financial crisis. We help with rent, utility bills, and other urgent expenses. We are a 501(c)3 charity. You can imagine how desperate these young women are these days. Read more about us at the IRL website: www.IllinoisRighttoLife.org

Last year our parish participated in providing attractive Father’s Day cards in the Narthex the weekend before Father’s Day. This is one important way we raise money for our grants. Since we are not able to offer the cards this year in person, we are offering you an opportunity to not only receive these beautiful cards, but also support Project Love in the process. Just fill in the form below and mail it to Eileen McGleam (address on form). A Mass is said for all the Fathers, and the Project Love Committee prays for the Fathers who receive these cards. Any dad can use prayers! Thank you.
