Sun rises on significant Anzac service

Hundreds of people gathered in silence, as the sun rose over Isaac, to commemorate Anzac Day and the Centenary of the Somme.

While this year recognised the battles that took place during the First World War in France and Flanders, a significant milestone was reached on the home front, in Clermont.

Mayor Anne Baker said she travelled to Clermont to help mark 100 years since the RSL Sub Branch first commemorated Anzac Day.

“It was great to see so many people gather this solemn occasion across Isaac, honouring all current and former men and women of our Defence Force.

“The Clermont Anzac Day parade is always a sight to behold with veterans, servicemen and women, and RSL members marching side by side with families, students, scouts and the rest of the community.

“Isaac has such a rich military history, which has seen men and women from our rural areas and local towns of Nebo, Carmila, St Lawrence and Clermont fight for our freedom.

Clermont RSL Sub Branch President David Ward said the community’s support for Anzac Day gets stronger every year.

“I believe the younger generations are truly honouring the Anzacs with so many making the effort to come to the dawn service and take part in the march.

“The community has, since the first service was held in Clermont in 1916, rallied around those who have served and are currently serving.

“Clermont is still home to five World War Two veterans who still do everything they can to honour the memory of the Anzacs each year.

Clermont RSL Sub Branch - thanks the Clermont communityContributed by David Ward, Branch President, Clermont RSL Sub Branch

On behalf of the RSL executive I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the servicemen, ex-servicemen, emergency services, local community clubs and schools for their participation in our Anzac Dawn Service and community march to Hoods Lagoon and to Isaac Regional Council for the service address to remember our fallen.

Thank you to the many people that volunteered their time in making this Anzac commemorations such a great tribute to our fallen. To Isaac Regional Council for your continued support for this day.

Clermont community as a whole thank you for your overwhelming support for the continued support of our Centenary of Anzac commemorations.

We as a community should be proud of what was achieved and the Veterans and RSL salute you all for a great outcome and such a fitting tribute to our fallen.

Festive family fun at the Clermont ShowMark your calendar for May 23 – 25 and join the festivities at Queensland’s oldest show.

Now in its 148th year, The Clermont Show – the Isaac Region’s Show is a vibrant three-day showcase celebrating the very best of life in Central Queensland.

Isaac Regional Council Mayor Anne Baker said the show is an annual highlight in the region’s calendar and a special part of our history.

“The Clermont Show is always alive with colour, fun and entertainment and is a fantastic family day out,” she said.

“Council is proud to be a diamond sponsor of the event, which really does have something for everyone.

“From amazing circus shows, to pig racing, horse and dog events, wood-chopping, machinery and pavilion displays and a giant pumpkin competition, the list of entertainment is endless,” Mayor Baker said.

Councillor and cattle grazier, Dale Appleton said he looks forward to the beef and cattle judging earlier in the week, followed by the annual Beef Dinner.

“Agriculture is an important livelihood for many in our region and an industry very close to my heart,” he said.

“I encourage everyone to come along to the Beef Dinner on Tuesday May 24, and to check out the great range of agricultural products and produce on display during the show.

“I’ll also be looking forward to seeing how much we can raise this year in the Charity Class Cattle Division, with all proceeds donated to CQ Rescue Helicopter and the Royal Flying Doctor Service.”

Admission to the Clermont Show is $5 adults, $3 pensioners/high school students and children under 12 are free.

Free buses will once again be departing from Dysart, Middlemount and Moranbah, see the schedule on Council’s website www.isaac.qld.gov.au

The Clermont Show public holiday is Wednesday May 25 for most of the Isaac region.

Well another weekend of entertainment in Clermont with the BA Bush Sports Rodeo and ancillary events on. Did not get to see too much of the riding or anything like that but as usual a bit of high jinx was gotten up to.

There was one bad scuffle on the dance floor which ended up seeing a Capella lad taken to hospital with a busted lip, some missing teeth and possible facial fractures. This appears to have all come about because people cannot keep their hands to themselves.

Everybody was having a great night by all accounts before the peanuts involved ruined it for everyone. This sort of behaviour is why people are less and less taking on positions on committees and the like because of the responsibility when serving liquor. I understand fully if no one wants to keep on taking the responsibility on. When these young blokes get to the same age and have a couple of kids and responsibilities maybe they will grow up. Anyway hope the young bloke is okay and we will follow through with any investigations.

Reported theft from the video store this week. Thanks to the cameras in the store picked up some good evidence. Remember whenever you are in a store - big brother is more than likely watching. Investigations continuing on this one.

Reports of cattle on the roads of the area. Make sure to keep a watch out when you are driving particularly at night. Also everybody check their spare tyres for their vehicles. A few people getting caught short on the highway lately with a spare flatter than the one they are replacing. Expensive oversight on their part.

Finally for this week the grey nomad invasion or migration however you look at it is upon us. Be patient on the roads if you do see caravaners as they are bringing money to our district which is sorely needed with the continuing downturn.

On a brighter note the crops are looking great which sees the annual migration and infestation of the amateur pig hunters in the area from the coastal parts. Can I ask everyone to keep a vigil up and report any unauthorised trespassing by piggers or shooters on properties. Also watch any fuel supplies and lock away farm machinery. Don’t give anyone an opportunity to steal your hard earned property.

Continuing incidence of ICE usage in the area. People this drug is insidious and will ruin lives. If you have any friends or rellies on it please get them help and pester them until they are off it.

That is about it for now. Hope everyone had a great Labour Day and catch you next week.

The Clermont Show – The Isaac Region’s Show is full of opportunities for the youth of our region to gain and develop their knowledge of the many different industries that make up our communities. The Young Judges competitions for Prime Beef Cattle, Stud Beef Cattle and Grain are being held, as well as the Stud Beef Cattle Paraders.

The Grain Young Judges competition is only relatively new to Clermont Show, however over the past two years has become an exciting competition with a fabulous prize for the winner. Competitors are provided with 3 different classes of grain (wheat, sorghum, chick pea or sunflowers), with 4 exhibits in each class. Eight minutes is allocated for the judging of each class, followed by a 2 minute oral presentation. In the oral section, competitors will be judged on their description of the features of the grain including quality, uniformity, cleanness, freedom from insect pests, insect damage and disease status. Entrants must be 15 to 25 years of age, as of August 1 2016. Registrations open at 4pm on Tuesday May 24 at the Stud Bull Ring, with judging commencing at 4.30pm.

The Stud section encompasses two of our youth competitions, with the Junior Paraders being held on Tuesday May 24 and the Young Judges competition commencing at 8am sharp Wednesday May 25. The Clermont Show has classes for younger competitors, starting with Under 9 years. This enables the younger children to start developing their knowledge and confidence which, in return, will see their communication and presentation skills grow each year. Interested entrants must be aged between 15 and 25 years of age, as at May 1 to be eligible.

Following the Stud Beef Cattle Young Judges competition on Wednesday May 25, the Prime Beef Cattle Young Judges competition will be held at the Sale Yards grandstand at 11am. As with the Stud Youth competitions, entrants are vying for an opportunity to compete at the Central Highlands Chamber Final, held in Emerald. These competitions provide our youth to learn from some of the industry leaders whilst also providing them with opportunities to network with contacts around the region.

The ability and occasion to develop public speaking skills whilst also developing interests and skills is quite rare which is surely a very good reason that participation in the Young Judges and Junior Parader competitions have been increasing over the past few years.

For more information about the competition, please contact the relevant person below, or go to www.clermontshow.com.au to find out more details.
