CLI NEWSLETTERFOREWORDSummer is finally here, and we’re excited for consistent swimming pool weather. We’ve experienced a bit of a mixed bag in the weather department during the Spring across the country. While there was a great start to Spring, mid Spring brought us record cold temperatures across the Plains, Midwest, and Northeast. Hot temps are here now, with the mercury topping triple digits in the Southwest! The rest of the country is starting to sizzle with Summer heat too.

In this edition of our E-Newsletter we check in with Randy Dukes for the PermaKote application guidelines, launch our BRAND NEW website, and touch base with Sales Pro Tom Martin to answer a customer’s question regarding whether or not our pebble finishes can be used above the water line.

Four years ago, in 2012 we began a new journey into content marketing. It all started with rebranding CL Industries and developing a new website on a content management system (CMS). Content marketing in its simplest definition is putting yourself in the mind of your target customer and creating content to suit their informational needs about your products and/or services.

We set out to create video, blog, website, and newsletter content tailored to provide our customers with all of the resources necessary to make a decision on the right finish for their swimming pool. Partnering with builders and applicators who use our products was and is paramount to success with the new marketing strategy.

Fast forward to 2016 and we realized we had outgrown the framework of the website we built in 2012. There has been a major shift from searching on desktop computers to mobile and tablet devices. In order to capitalize on this change, we had to redesign our website. While the site we created in 2012 was mobile friendly, it was not responsive. A responsive website utilizes breakpoints to resize the website based on the viewing resolution of the device it’s being browsed on.

Early this year we set out to completely redesign our website and optimize it for viewing on multiple device platforms.

The new site is now live and we’re excited for our customers to dive in and browse on their smart phones, tablets and desktops.

COMBINATIONFINISHESWe pride ourselves on creating the most durable and beautiful pool finishes in the world. All of our products include aggregates that are mined from the Earth in a responsible and sustainable fashion. Every finish we’ve ever created, from our Quartz finishes to our Pebble and Polished Marble finishes, was inspired by a natural landscape. Our goal has always been to provide our customers with finishes that will recreate water colors and poolscapes that mimic what we find in nature. By utilizing a combination of finishes with blue and tan pigment many of our customers have created swimming pools that mimic lagoons or beaches. Our pebble finishes tend to be used more often than not in these environments, but quartz and polished marble have also been used to accomplish this look.

Beach entries have gained popularity over the past few years and are the most common application of combination finishes. Typically a tan pigmented finish is used in the beach entry and a light to medium blue pigmented finish is used in the deep end. The combination of finishes gives you the look of a sandy beach extending into a deeper blue sea.

We’ve also had customers utilize a combination of different pigments on sun benches and sun shelfs to give some contrast to the deeper areas of the pools. Other customers look to have a finish with more traction in their pools and go with pebble or quartz, and then install a polished marble finish (Hydrazzo or Hydrazzo Classico) in their spa for a smoother feel.

There are no rules when it comes to combining finishes as long a an experienced Authorized Applicator is installing the plaster, so get creative. We’d love for our customers to share their own combination pools with us. Send us your pics at [email protected]

It’s needless to say that our Sales Team knows a thing or two about finishing swimming pools. We’ve decided to expand our “Ask an Applicator” series to “Ask a CLI Pool Pro.” This edition’s question is fielded by Mr. Tom Martin. Tom has served our customers for nearly 15 years as a regional sales manager covering nearly every state east of the Rockies.

Our question comes from Danny at Medallion Pool in Asheville, NC. They design and build some of the most stunning backyard living environments we’ve ever seen.

“Hello guys...I have a customer with a larger overflow wall (infinity edge pool)

and trough. The trough is finished in natural stone and has developed a leak. The

stone has to come off in order to find and repair the leak. As part of future leak

prevention to reduce labor and home preference, we were exploring the idea of

putting a pebble aggregate plaster on the overflow wall and trough. I’ve heard

from other manufacturer reps that pebble shouldn’t be out of the water. Some

other aggregate installers I’ve spoken with say it can, thus the use on beach

entries, etc. The overflow is scheduled for a few hours during the day (as part of

daily operation), and full operation if in use. So there will be some time the wall

would not be covered in water (as opposed to falling water). Would one of your

products (pebble or other) function well in this situation?”

Hi Danny, unfortunately no plaster manufacture I’m aware of warranties finishes above the water line, but with that being said, it is still done. Make sure you plaster in spring or summer to allow max cure time before being drained.

Follow the steps below for optimal performance.

1. Apply Permakote waterproofing to substrate before plastering (See next article for Permakote Installation Guidelines)

2. Use larger aggregate finishes such as CrystalStones Natural or Hydrazzo Classico.

3. Use the strongest mix possible (Do not over water plaster mix, sometimes a watered down mix is used for a scratch coat)

4. Hard Trowel to drive out all water.

5. Once plaster is applied and exposed use soaker hoses (available at garden stores) or concrete blankets/sprinklers to keep plaster wet for as long as possible... 28 days would be nice.. minimum 14 days unless in Ultra cold climes like Wisconsin/ Maine then shoot for 28 days.

Additional recommendations:

• A tile break is advisable in case of failure, so you can chip out and replace a small section. • Use an Authorized CL Industries Applicator for plastering.

RANDY DUKESPOOL SCHOOL WITH

Our bond coat system is used by applicators of competing plaster projects for one simple reason; it is the best bonding agent available. I’ve seen so many failed plaster applications (new construction & remodels) over the years through my work as an expert witness, and many of them could have been avoided had the applicator properly prepared the substrate (and used a bond coat) prior to plastering the swimming pool.

I’ve carefully rewritten my technical description on PermaKote including the installation guidelines in an effort to reintroduce our customers to the product. PermaKote will in nearly all cases extend the life of exposed aggregate pool finishes.

Here is my take on the product’s benefits as well as my recommendation for the installation guidelines.

11

PermaKote is a cementitious bonding agent with highly modified polymer additives providing superior chemical and mechanical bonding for underwater use. PermaKote provides a strong link between properly prepared substrates and new plaster.

PermaKote can be applied over most properly prepared masonry surfaces after 28 days including formed and poured, shotcrete (wet or dry), for the application of tile, pool, and water feature plaster.

FEATURES AND BENEFITS:

Coverage 250–300 sq. ft.(approx. 23-27 sq. meters) dependingon the coarseness of the substrate

Simplified mixing

Economical, no waste,one component blend

Superior bond

Provides uniform stabilization of substrate promoting even drying

Reduces unnecessary substrate preparation

Virtually eliminates pop-offs and delamination when properly applied

PACKAGING:

PermaKote is factory pre-blended in convenient 80 lb. (36.3 kg) bags of specially prepared portland cement, oven dried quartz aggregate, and water activated modified polymer admixes.

SURFACE PREPARATION:

The use of foreign compounds on the receiving cementitious substrate is not permitted.

NEW CONSTRUCTION:

The substrate should be free of laitance. Remove foreign materials including any crystallization, form release agents, algae, fungus, rust, etc. by sand blasting, water blasting preferably with a Turbo Tip, or acid washing. To be waterproof all penetrations must be properly filled and compacted before PermaKote is applied.

REMODEL:

Thoroughly inspect receiving surface for hollows, loose and/or chemically damaged soft plaster removing all suspect materials. Acid washing must be followed by neutralization with sodium bicarbonate (baking soda).

Painted and fiberglass coatings over cementitious surfaces should be sand blasted, water blasted or scarified to a rough surface, making sure all previous foreign coatings are removed.

Undercut tile and around fittings a minimum of 3 inches (approx. 7.5 cm).

NOTE: All preparations require a thorough wash down by pressure washing to remove all chemical residues.

MIXING:

State-of-the-art dry catalyzing resins have been scientifically factory blended and require only the addition of potable water to activate their special qualities. The jobsite addition of any liquid acrylic, polymer, or latex additives will adversely affect the coverage, ease of use, and unnecessarily increase the applied cost.

PermaKote requires 8 quarts (7.5 liters) of potable water per 80 lb. (36.3 kg) bag of dry mix. Partial bags of PermaKote may be mixed using the same proportional formula. Example: 1 quart (approx. 0.9 L) per 10 lbs. (approx. 4.5 kg)

Add a proportionate amount of potable water into a suitable flat bottom mixing

container (5 gallon – 19 L bucket). While continuously mixing, add PermaKote and continue mixing for 2 -3 minutes. Allow to slake for 2 minutes and remix.

PermaKote may be made thicker or slightly thinner by the addition or deletion of water although the above proportions are for optimal bonding performance, workability, and coverage.

METHODS OF APPLICATION:

Heavy nap roller 1 inch(approx. 3.0 cm) & masonry brush

Hopper gun and masonry brush

Masonry brush for smaller applications

APPLICATION:

Apply PermaKote only when the substrate and ambient temperatures are 40° F (4° C) and rising and under 100°F (38° C) to a damp not wet surface. Never apply in freezing temperatures.

PermaKote should be used promptly. Only mix amounts to be used within 30 minute intervals. Do not allow to stand unused.

Regardless of the method of application used it is recommended that the mixed PermaKote be applied first to steps. If using the heavy nap roller method allow material to set for 1–2 minutes before back-rolling with a clean 1 inch (approx. 3.0 cm) heavy nap roller to stipple creating a rough textured surface.

1

2

3

NOTE: PermaKote is ready to be back-rolled when the roller pulls the material into peaks that stand and do not sag. The hopper gun and masonry brush method should be back-rolled if needed to create rough finish.

Starting next to steps continue coating the entire wall surface to the floor using the same procedure around the pool walls. Promptly move to the deep end of the pool. Coat the entire floor following the same procedure and back rolling to the steps.

PermaKote may be re-tempered 1 time with a small addition of water while mechanical mixing.

Wash tools with water promptly after use. Caution: PermaKote is designed to stick tenaciously to all surfaces. DO NOT allow PermaKote to dry on any unwanted surfaces. It can only be removed by vigorous mechanical action and/or harsh chemicals.

CURING:

PermaKote will reach minimum cure in 6 hours. Cooler temperatures and low humidity could extend the minimum to 12 hours, but preferably overnight. Plaster should not be applied before 6 hours. Overnight curing is recommended.

COVERAGE:

80 lbs. (36.3 kg) Coverage 250 – 300 sq. ft. (approx. 23 – 37 sq. meters) depending on surface conditions, viscosity of mix,and thickness.

PLASTERING:

Apply a light mist of clean potable water to PermaKote prior to plastering. Inspect to make sure no foreign material has settled on PermaKote that could prevent proper bonding. Plaster must be applied within 2 weeks or an additional coat is required. Minimum 3/8 – inches(0.95 – 1.3 cm) plaster for most surfaces.

WARRANTY:

For warranty validation, the followingmust be true.

INSTALLERS:

The installer shall have had at least 2 years experience with bonding agents and demonstrate that they have successfully installed and completed similar projects with the same scope and size.

Installer shall provide at least one experienced technician during the application. Installer shall provide an affidavit stating that all of the

Manufacture’s recommendations were followed with pictures.

MATERIALS:

Packaging of the 80 lb. (36 kg) bags shall be protected before, during and after installation from heat and moisture, off the ground and covered with moisture proof heavy plastic sheeting.

The pre-blended factory material

shall be mixed with potable water to a consistency prescribed by the manufacturer’s water to cement ratio for the chosen application method.

APPLICATION:

Material can be sprayed, rolled or brushed to provide a rough surface that will facilitate the application of the finish coat that will help develop a good mechanical as well as a good chemical bond.

Please contact your CL Industries representative for any clarificationbefore installation.
