Prelude “Passacaglia” from Suite No. 7 in G minor Michael Conley, piano
G.F. Handel (1685-1759)
Introit “Out of the Depths” Martin Luther, harm. Quartet
J. S. Bach (1740)
Therefore my trust is in the Lord, and not in mine own merit. On God my soul shall rest; God's word upholds my fainting spirit.
God's promised mercy is my fort, my comfort, and my strong support; I wait for it with patience.
–Psalm 130
Welcome Cal Chinn
Call to Worship Psalm 30
We will extol you, O Lord, for you have drawn us up. Sing praises to the Lord, O you faithful ones, and give thanks to God’s holy name. Weeping may linger for the night, but joy comes with the morning. To you, O Lord, we cried, and to the Lord we made supplication. Hear, O Lord, and be gracious to us! O Lord, be our helper! You have turned my mourning into dancing; You have taken off my sackcloth and clothed me with joy; my soul shall praise you and not be silent. O Lord our God, we give thanks to you forever!

Prayer of Confession Psalm 130 Let us remember with hope this ancient song of God’s people. Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord. Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications! If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with God, so that the Lord may be revered. I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in God’s word I hope; My soul waits for the Lord, more than those who watch for the morning, more than those who watch for the morning.

Assurance of Forgiveness O you who wrestle with God, have hope! For with our God there is steadfast love and great power. It is God who forgives us, and redeems us from all our wrongs.
The Peace The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.

Musical Reflection “It’s Quiet Uptown” from Hamilton Lin-Manuel Miranda Gabrielle Goozée-Nichols, Nancy Hall, Vrushabh Doshi, Jefferson Packer, quartet
There are moments that the words don’t reach There is suffering too terrible to name You hold your child as tight as you can
Then push away the unimaginable The moments when you’re in so deep
Feels easier to just swim down And so they move uptown
And learn to live with the unimaginable I spend hours in the garden
I walk alone to the store And it’s quiet uptown
I never liked the quiet before I take the children to church on Sunday
A sign of the cross at the door And I pray
That never used to happen before
If you see him in the street walking by himself Talking to himself, have pity
You would like it uptown, it’s quiet uptown He is working through the unimaginable
-
His hair has gone grey, he passes every day They say he walks the length of the city
You knock me out, I fall apart Can you imagine?
Look at where we are Look at where we started
I know I don’t deserve you But hear me out, that would be enough
If I could spare his life If I could trade his life for mine He’d be standing here right now
And you would smile And that would be enough
I don’t pretend to know The challenges we’re facing
I know there’s no replacing what we’ve lost And you need time But I’m not afraid
Just let me stay here by your side And that would be enough
If you see him in the street, walking by her side Talking by her side, have pity
Do you like it uptown? It’s quiet uptown He is trying to do the unimaginable
If you see him walking in the park, long after dark Taking in the sights of the city
Look around, look around, look around They are trying to do the unimaginable
There are moments that the words don’t reach There’s a grace too powerful to name
We push away what we could never understand We push away the unimaginable They are standing in the garden
Standing there side by side She takes his hand It’s quiet uptown
Forgiveness, can you imagine? Forgiveness, can you imagine?
If you see him in the street, walking by her side Talking by her side, have pity
Look around, look around They are going through the unimaginable
Prayers of the People & The Lord’s Prayer Joanne Whitt
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Offertory Anthem “God Be with You Till We Meet Again” Quartet
Ralph Vaughan Williams (1906)
God be with you till we meet again; Loving counsels guide, uphold you, With a Shepherd’s care enfold you: God be with you till we meet again.
God be with you till we meet again; Unseen wings protecting hide you,
Daily manna still provide you: God be with you till we meet again.
God be with you till we meet again; When life’s perils thick confound you, Put unfailing arms around you: God be with you till we meet again.
God be with you till we meet again; keep love’s banner floating o’er you,
Smite death’s threatening wave before you: God be with you till we meet again. –Jeremiah Eames Rankin (1880)

Well Chosen Words
Here at Calvary, we believe that words and language matter.
That’s why we use expansive language for God and inclusive language for God’s people whenever and wherever possible.
We believe that inclusive and expansive language should (1) seek to include all people, (2) be sensitive to those who
have been marginalized in history, and (3) broaden our expressions of God (“Well Chosen Words,” PC(USA). There are, however,
ancient prayers and poignant pieces of music that are from a time and an era when the kind of sensitivity to language we
now value was not shared. Sometimes we have changed the words to better reflect our values. But other times, making changes
was so invasive to the integrity of the original piece, that we have left it as is. Rather than eliminating these prayers and songs
from our worship altogether, we hold them lightly, recognizing the cultural and historical contexts in which they were written
and committing to be reformed and always reforming in how we address God and God’s people.
