The Essential Montessori Mathematics: Implementing Authentic Montessori in the Public Sector

Sheraton Columbia Hotel, Baltimore, Maryland October 11-14, 2012

Benedetto Scoppola and Kay Baker celebrate the magnitude and insight of Psychogeometry, written by Maria Montessori, released in English in 2010 and published in Spanish eighty years ago. These stellar mathematicians explore the relationship between geometry and mathematics in which spontaneous artistic and creative handling of geometry materials in the Casa years empowers the child to explore geometric, mathematical, and algebraic proofs in the elementary and adolescent years (middle school through high school). This focus on a mathematical culture will be valuable to both public and private sector Montessori schools.

A panel of speakers from Capitol Hill Montessori in DC, the Baltimore Montessori Charter School, Crossway Community School, and Washington Montessori Institute (WMI) will speak to the rewards and challenges of implementing authentic Montessori in the public sector.

9:00–10:00 a.m. The Role of Geometry and Childhood: A Montessori PerspectiveKay BakerThe materialization of mathematics through the geometric arrangement of shapes and colors allows children a higher degree of abstraction at the beginning of the elementary years through sensorial experiences with geometric materials. Through these geometry experiences, children evolve math-ematical relationships that are impossible to internalize except

through the senses. Montessori writes, “and so the psychic energies are free to grow. The child thinks and reflects according to his natural ability.”

10:30–11:30 a.m.From Euclid to Montessori, the Construction of Rational GeometryBenedetto Scoppola Maria Montessori often referred to the origins of the disciplines, and in Psychogeometry Montessori was directly inspired by Euclid’s Elements. We shall examine the similarities and differences between Euclidean geometry and Montessori materials. This comparison, apart from its historical interest, will point out many crucial and sometimes hidden features of the construction of rational geometry in the Montessori method.

A. The Lines That Make the Clouds: The Essence of the Mathematical Mind in the First Six Years of Life (Primary), Part OneGinni Sackett A two-year-old and his grandpa watch dissipating lines of contrails left by invisible airplanes across a clear blue sky. Grandpa asks, “Do you know what those are?” The two-year-old answers with complete confidence, “Those are the lines that make the clouds.” A precociously verbal toddler gives rare voice to the mathematical mind at work in the

first plane. For two afternoons we will explore the essence of that mind, its role in the formation of the personality, and how to support its normal development through concrete, sensorial experience, as we discover the natural road to formal mathematics.

B. Mathematics within the Montessori Elementary Framework: Implementation Using Geometry (Elementary)Kay Baker and Benedetto Scoppola Kay and Benedetto will look at principles of Montessori math, especially those which are analogous to psychogeometry. They will explore the role of the materials and the child’s discovery of mathematical truths, the power of proofs, geometric constructions, and logical reasoning through the passages of the geometry materials, for example the teaching of fraction equivalence in the study of equality, congruency, and similarity.

C. Making Connections: Montessori Math and State Standards Tim Nee and Susan ClarkeThis presentation is designed for those working with primary through upper elementary students and will introduce the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, their organization, essential elements, and instructional meaning. Participants will explore the standards along with the eight standards for

C. Making Connections: Montessori Math and State Standards, continuedmathematical practices. Activities will focus on the alignment of specific state standards with Montessori album lessons and materials as well as address standards and album lessons that do not align. Sample alignment documents will be provided and time for discussion and questions will be included.

Saturday, October 13, 20129:00–10:00 a.m.Supporting the Needs of Families and Children in Urban Settings: A Partnership Approach to Public and Private SchoolsMolly O’ShaughnessyMolly tells the story of Cornerstone Montessori School, an authentic, urban Montessori School connected to the Montessori Training Center of Minnesota. The school seeks to create a broad community of multicultural and economically diverse families who share the mission to

nurture the child’s natural desire to learn and grow through quality Montessori environments. Molly will share her progress in meeting the goal of replicating Montessori schools in communities serving families in poverty.

10:30–11:30 a.m.The Essential Montessori Mathematics: Whole-School ImplementationJohn McNamaraJohn McNamara is the principal of a school spanning Children’s House through middle school with over forty years of classroom experience. As the teacher of adolescents, John sees the whole school perspective of Montessori mathematics through the lens of his special expertise in math and Montessori implementation. He will emphasize the continuity of Montessori materials as they

connect between levels and repeat their developmental appeal at every stage from childhood to adolescence.

D. The Essence of the Mathematical Mind under Six: Transforming Theory into Practice (Primary), Part TwoGinni Sackett

E. Implementing Authentic Montessori in the Public Sector The Baltimore/DC area has a history of making Montessori available to more children through public and charter schools. A panel of founders, principals, coordinators, and teachers moderated by Janet McDonell from Washington Montessori Institute (WMI) will speak to the rewards and challenges of implementing authentic Montessori in the public sector. Brandon Eatman, Waduda Henderson, and Bonnie Beste represent DC public schools, and Allison Shecter and Anne Byrne represent charter schools. Elizabeth Kading has worked as a teacher in both public and charter schools. After our panelists “tell their story” there will be opportunities for Q and A.

F. High Noon for Montessori Mathematics: Advanced Challenges and Creative Solutions Michael WaskiMichael Waski is a math visionary at the adolescent level (ages 12-18). He will look at authentic Montessori mathematic extensions in algebra and trigonometry as well as introducing a new math timeline that traces the mathematics journey of discovery through calculus.

Sunday, October 14, 20129:00–10:30 a.m.Panel: Future Convergences for Private and Public SectorsThis session provides an opportunity to reflect on the applications of the lessons at the conference.
