Essential Services DeliveredEstée Lauder had an MPLS network previous

to engaging IRG. A few years ago, IRG deployed a network to leverage broadband technologies for primary connectivity (Cable, DSL, Fiber) and 3G as secondary connectivity using multiple carriers for optimal coverage. IRG worked with Estee Lauder and determined which technologies would be deployed based on business needs.

IRG then installed FortWifi 80CM security appli-ances at remote sites with Cisco 3560 PoE switches. This satisfied the VLAN segmentation requirements for POS and future needs for PoE enabled devices as well as provided WiFi in the back office area for corporate Wi-Fi devices. This selection al-lowed traffic to dynamically route over the secondary connection if and when the primary connection became compromised.

Additionally, IRG configured the built-in 56k modem to use the fax line for dial backup in the event that 3G cov-erage was inadequate during install. For the VPN concentrators, IRG used Fortigate 620Bs as HA clusters at the main datacenter and a back-

Its products come with a promise to uphold the finest standards of excellence. Through extensive research and stringent product evaluation, the company is pleased to bring its customers skincare, makeup and fragrance products that are both gentle and highly effective. Estée Lauder products are sold in more than 135 countries and territories. In the U.S., they are available in better department stores and specialty stores and online at esteelauder.com.

up datacenter for maximum redundancy and disaster recovery. IRG continued to manage the device con-figurations and perform audits on broadband con-nections to ensure Estee Lauder was receiving the best local access technologies at each retail location.

Customer Faces New ChallengesRecently, Estee Lauder’s business strategy re-

quired a more robust WLAN environment on the sales floor to provide Wi-Fi for mobile POS and

future customer-facing applications. Since the FortiWifi 80CM was in-

stalled in the back office area, IRG needed to reassess the

existing configuration with respect to the entire retail floor plan.

IRG determined re-quirements for ubiqui-tous coverage on the sales floor. The company obtained floor plans from

Estée Lauder for four stores which represented

typical floor plans, and per-formed extensive site surveys

to determine requirements for optical RF coverage. These included

Following deployment, IRG dispatched a technician to verify the coverage for Wi-Fi intensive applications in each store.

IRG’s Low Cost SolutionIRG leveraged existing connectivity and existing security appliances, and adding an extender to optimize

signal thought out all sales floor. No new technology was required, just modification of existing technology. Estée Lauder stores now have ample Wi-Fi coverage throughout all areas of their four test stores. They are positioned to deploy mobile POS applications, back office applications, and future customer-facing applications. Plans to deploy this solution in all 450 stores will begin once approved by senior management.

CIO ChallengesSimilar to so many retailers today, Hudson News (Hudson)

found themselves managing network-related responsibilities on a daily basis. This effort, at times, interfered with core business processes. Service prequalification, provisioning, installation, and invoice management alone were forcing highly-skilled associates to perform daily tasks that took them away from the business of running the stores.

According to Gary MacRae, Hudson’s Chief Information Officer, “When we first decided to move away from dial-up, we implemented a network on our own. We found the best carrier for each site, placed the order and tried to make sure the commitments were met. It quickly became apparent that this solution was impractical.”

“IRG took a very different approach. They recognized that bandwidth is a commodity, and showed us how a broadband-based WAN can simplify processes, while driving revenue.”

The IRG SolutionIRG’s Project Management and Engineering teams worked

in lock-step with Hudson’s team to determine that a VPN was the best fit for Hudson. When the rollout to Hudson’s facilities began, a carefully designed implementation plan was drafted and approved by all parties to maximize project efficiencies.

Hudson News Selects Industry Retail Group for WAN Design, Implementation and Support

Hudson News specialty retail shops in-clude such proprietary brands as Hudson Booksellers, Kids Works, Euro Cafe, $10/$15 Bou-tique, and more. National brands partnering with Hudson News include Discovery Channel, CNN, Crabtree & Evelyn, Roots, House of Blues, Sunglass Hut, Life Is Good and Quiznos.Hudson’s Executive Manage-ment team is committed to driving revenue for airport part-ners and maintaining a high level of customer satisfaction. They looked to Industry Retail Group (IRG) to provide them with a turnkey, PCI-Compli-ance assisting, Wide-Area-Network (WAN).

coordinating with Hudson’s sites to insure a smooth turn-up.IRG RetaiLANSM integration services were made available at a moment’s notice to complete demarc

extensions, PC reconfigurations, or additional CAT5e drops. Project status was communicated in an easy-to-read format, and at an interval chosen by Hudson. As each site was activated, IRG Pro-Active Network Monitoring was initiated to give Hudson real-time up/down notification of each location.

Overcoming ObstaclesCommon challenges to a multi-site rollout were further complicated by the fact that many Hudson stores

are located beyond the TSA security checkpoints in airports. IRG staff, carrying tools, were faced with multiple security measures, yet completed the deployment in the middle of the night to meet the tight installation deadline.

IT ChallengesJAB wanted to add a wave of applications intended to increase brand awareness,

improve customer buying experiences and maximize employee efficiencies. After carefully performing due diligence and then committing to an initial application launch in 90 days, JAB realized that a broadband WAN was going to be needed, and needed fast, to accommodate the new services.

Historically bleeding-edge cautious with regards to its IT strategies, JAB would need a tried-and-true network topology and one that could keep pace with their growth plans of adding stores and rolling out new applications such as high-speed POS authorizations, WLAN-based inventory management, centralized payment processing, and centralized POS updating.

They also needed a solutions provider who could effectively accommodate the IT staff’s initiative of limiting the number of T1 connections in the network due to their capital constraints, and to ensure DSL and cable connectivity nationwide at a high success rate.

The IRG SolutionAfter a competitive evaluation period, IRG was selected to provide broadband services, implementation

support, and serve as project management lead for the JAB WAN rollout. Working within JAB’s 90-day rollout schedule for its applications, IRG successfully fulfilled its commitment to activating almost 400 stores on the WAN in just 10 weeks.

Supplementing best-in-class VPN appliances, IRG provisioned and installed broadband services for each of the JAB stores. The rollout included the provisioning of broadband, installation of broadband and VPN CPE elements, all necessary LAN cabling and POS software updates to support the new WAN. ☞

CIO ChallengesThe challenges were plenty, and time was of the essence. With

a new, broadband-based POS launching in 120 days across 32 states and 3 countries, BCBG needed its new network designed and implemented before the rollout could begin. The company’s decision to replace its legacy dial-up network in favor of a broadband-based VPN was driven by several factors, including the desire for increased bandwidth for new retail applications, improved network security, and IP-based payment processing. Furthermore, the added bandwidth and network capacity would allow BCBG to implement new Web-based applications to help drive business, perpetuate brand awareness, and increase associate quality of life.

Embracing an always-on network carried with it the responsibilities of maintaining PCI compliance by protecting its customer’s sensitive information. Customer trust is paramount to BCBG, and they insisted upon a network partner who could deliver a compliance-assisting solution. BCBG’s final requirement was a true turn-key implementation. The network partner must be able to provide complete circuit provisioning, equipment staging, configuration and transport, technician logistics, in-store cabling, network activation, and ongoing support services.

“We wanted a partner who had the ability to collectively manage every aspect of this broadband rollout,” said Hamid Nehoray, VP of Retail IT for BCBG Max Azria Group. “My team had their plates full with our new POS project, and a new network vendor had to be able to think on their feet and act quickly on our behalf to get a cost-effective, reliable, and scalable network installed fast. BCBG’s brands are some of the premier names in fashion today, and we wanted a top-shelf team and network to help us leverage technology to keep us there.”

BCBG Max Azria Group Selects IRG to add some Attitude to its Global Store WAN

With critically acclaimed collections, trend-setting designs, and an aggressive expansion plan, BCBG Max Azria is truly a powerhouse of style in the fashion industry. Extremely successful promoting its “good style, good attitude” fashion philosophy since the brand’s launch in 1989, BCBG is embraced by A-list celebrities and women worldwide for its attention-grabbing, yet wearable designs.Such a dynamic company required a like-minded network partner, capable of helping the company transform its store-wide IT infrastructure by customizing each facet of network design, implementation, and support, while helping BCBG maintain Payment Card Industry (PCI) compliance.

C A S E S T U D YThe IRG Solution

After careful due diligence and comparisons between numerous vendors, the IRG|VPN was chosen as the network of choice, for its global coverage, flexible topology and PCI compliant security. This premier, managed VPN service was a perfect fit for assisting BCBG in meeting their network requirements, while offering a level of scalability that is sure to pay dividends in their future expansion plans. Working in partnership with the BCBG IT staff, IRG designed a true turn-key solution that was carefully managed throughout every step of the rollout. From network appliance selection, configuration, logistics, in-store wiring, activation, testing, and acceptance, IRG owned each process. Mr. Hasenzahl added, “The IRG team was able to coordinate with each individual store about their specific installation process and schedule, which was another item to which other vendors weren’t willing to commit. My team’s focus was able to remain on its normal, heavy work load while IRG handled the WAN implementation.”

CIO ChallengesParty City had several different networks and

service levels in place that varied between corporate stores and franchises. This burdened the corporate IT department to designate more resources for managing the network, resolving store issues, and ensuring all stores maintained connection to critical corporate data.

Party City realized the company needed a cost-efficient, managed service provider that could implement a high speed WAN and deliver “always on” connectivity to every store. After a diligent search, Industry Retail Group was selected to install, manage, and create the WAN. ☞

Party City is the leader in the party goods industry. They are America’s largest specialty party goods chain and the country’s premier Halloween specialty retailer. Party City operates more than 800 company-owned and franchise stores throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. The Company designs, manufactures and distributes party goods through its vertically aligned retailers as well as other retailers worldwide. The Company’s worldwide locations include their corporate headquarters in Elmsford, NY as well as locations throughout Asia, Europe, the Americas and Australia.

Party City Celebrates Faster Connectivity, Lower CostsThe IRG Solution

IRG’s project management team assured Party City the rollout would be completed in 60 days across all stores. As with all retail stores, the store-level implementation needed to be quick and without interruption to daily business. From the project management team to the installers, IRG maintained proactive communication with the retailer, giving status updates on the progress. This reduced the

chance of business being interrupted or slowed at any time.

In all, the implementation was completed 60 days for 600 stores,

which included both corporate and franchise stores.

Also included in the rollout were 200 Factory Card Outlet stores which are owned by Party City. IRG delivered a faster WAN at a lower total cost than the previous, slower network. From credit card processing to accessing corporate

data, IRG provided the “always on” connectivity required by a busy retailer.

“We’re pleased to deliver a faster, more cost-efficient, and more reliable

WAN to Party City,” said Mike Luzio, CEO of IRG.” We understand this has allowed

Party City to focus resources on more important

IRG has been selected as the MSP for 400 Halloween City stores as well. With only a 4-month time period where these stores are active and operational due to their seasonal business strategy, IRG was able to effectively provide a cost-effective solution that can and will be extremely flexible with the brand. Service included prequalifying sites that change each year and installing a fully mobile, portable solution that supports several applications. IRG successfully works within this very short deployment window year after year with outstanding results.

CIO ChallengesQuiksilver sought a managed service provider

equipped to deliver turnkey solutions for all of its locations. The company needed a cost effective, PCI-compliant network to keep pace with the growing retail chain. Further, Quiksilver intended to continue utilizing their network to power broadband-enabled applications for such future applications like VoIP, Store Traffic Counters, and Dynamic Signage.

The IRG SolutionAfter some key IT executives had worked with the

IRG in the past, when the time was right, Quiksilver quickly partnered with IRG for Network Services, including wireline broadband, TruManage Pro-Active Support, Enhanced PCI support, and RetaiLAN for turn-key integration.

The project officially launched with the IRG as-signment of a dedicated Project Management team to handle all aspects of the network implementation.

Quiksilver designs, produces and distributes clothing, accessories and related products for young-minded people and develops brands that represent a casual lifestyle driven from a boardriding heritage. Quiksilver’s authenticity is evident in its innovative products, events and retail environments across the globe. In addition to their own retail locations, Quiksilver’s products are sold throughout the world, primarily in surf shops, skate shops and other specialty stores that provide authentic retail experience for its customers.

IRG delivers high speed, low cost wireline services across Quiksilver’s North American locations

This team ensured the entire process would be completed with minimal interrup-tion to business op-erations and consisted of a Project Manager, Project Administrator, and Network Engineer. Broadband provisioning and CPE procurement progressed transparently during the development of rollout, stag-ing, and logistical plans. IRG was even able to suc-cessfully keep costs down by transitioning already stable wireline products to the IRG platform, thereby eliminating the need for a truck roll to the store loca-tion and eliminating unwanted non-recurring costs to Quiksilver. This was a huge advantage that IRG was able to bring to the table over its competition.

One important aspect of the project was IRG’s change management and maintenance of the existing Juniper VPN firewall investment. This

was encompassed by IRG’s total device management of the Quiksilver network. Each box was configured and verified for maximum speed and efficiency.

Quiksilver Case Study

18

C A S E S T U D YIRG, when needed, provided full turnkey integration of the network, which included staging, configuration,

and on site installation of selected stores throughout the Quiksilver network. Quiksilver’s previous network included a large number of high-priced T1 circuits.

Because of IRG’s extensive coverage partnerships throughout North America, they were able to eliminate the high cost T1 circuits and enable high speed, low cost, wireline services to nearly all of the locations throughout the Quiksilver North American footprint. T1 circuits are often four to five times higher cost each month than IRG’s wireline broadband and was a driving factor to look to IRG for their vast experience of obtaining low-cost high speed connectivity in hard to reach areas. Early 2013, IRG delivered a completely separate wireline network to support Quiksilver’s guest Wi-Fi experience.

“Quiksilver has been influencing youth culture and fashion for 30 years from coast to coast,” said Mike Luzio, CEO of IRG. “We’re are always eager to work with our customers on helping them a design a secure WAN network that we believe helps them focus on what they do best. That’s our job. We continue to work with Quiksilver to look at new applications to drive over their network and are excited to help Quiksilver engage their fast-paced, media-hungry audience.”

provider equipped to deliver turnkey solutions for all of its North American locations. The company needed a cost effective, PCI-compliant network to keep pace with the busy restaurant chain that afforded them the ability to concentrate on driving business sales and not managing their network partners.

Further, Macaroni Grill intended to fully utilize the network to power broadband-enabled applications such as VoIP, IP-based Video Surveillance, and Dynamic Signage all while having a single company that had the experience and expertise to manage the Macaroni Grill chosen VPN infrastructure.

PHASE 2: 2013 to presentPreviously, The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf (CBTL) worked with IRG to deploy a customer hotspot solution

that maximized customer experience and ran parallel to the existing POS and data network. That was 2006. At that time, IRG delivered best in market broadband connectivity with customer facing wireless hotspots that worked in conjunction with a third-party digital signage solution. The solution allowed Coffee Bean to run marketing campaigns and deliver loyalty programs through the IRG managed captive portals.

As the need for customer facing applications grew, the IRG broadband connection was leveraged to deploy digital media content in addition to digital signage.

Recently, CBTL evaluated what would be the best solution for cost and efficiency for its managed POS and data network. The company turned again to IRG for a best-in-breed solution. Leveraging the existing IRG broadband connectivity, IRG designed a fully managed WAN network including connectivity for CBTL corporate headquarters in Los Angeles. The solution at the CBTL stores included:

Born and brewed in Southern California since 1963, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf is the oldest and largest privately held specialty coffee and tea retailer in the United States. Since opening its first cafe in Brentwood, California, the company has always been passionate about connecting loyal customers with carefully handcrafted products.Delivering the look, taste and aroma of the world’s best coffees and teas is what they do best, and every sip takes its customers to the corners of the earth where each flavor was cultivated. Learn more at www.coffeebean.com.

• A primary broadband Internet connection either utilizing the existing connectivity or deploying a newer, faster technology.

• A 4G backup account for business continuity.• A managed FortiWifi 60CM for security and VPN.• An updated wireless AP (Ubiquity AirRouter HP) for

compatibility with the latest WiFi innovations.

At corporate headquarters and the CBTL datacenter, IRG implemented a FortiGate 800C as the VPN concentrator and DMZ firewall. IRG’s management of the solution is IRG Total Device Management which includes 24/7 SNMP health and performance management, change control, and remediation of all connectivity issues.

The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf Case Study

24

C A S E S T U D YWhen the deployment was complete in all US-based stores and the corporate office, the company realized

a dramatic savings over three years when compared to their previous network. As an added benefit, IRG’s Total Device Management allows CBTL’s IT staff to focus on priority projects rather than connectivity issues at the store level.

Together, the fully managed WAN and customer Wi-Fi enable CBTL to deliver an engaging customer experience customers have come to expect since 1963.

PHASE 1: 2006 to 2013“The Bean” Selects IRG to Provide Free Wi-Fi

Now you can have your coffee and drink it too...while checking your e-mail for free! Thanks to Industry Retail Group (IRG), now Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf customers in any of their hundreds of domestic locations can spend all day utilizing the Wi-Fi hotspot without paying an access fee frequently seen at the competition. CBTL has always sought to provide a quality lifestyle destination to its patrons by inviting them to enjoy a relaxed and cozy environment while sipping from the extensive menu of over 22 coffees and 20 teas.

In an effort to both enhance its current customers’ experience and attract new customers, CBTL decided that it was well worth the implementation costs to provide free Wi-Fi. To date, according to informal surveys taken at various locations using the Wi-Fi service, the feedback has been only positive.

IT ChallengesIn an increasingly competitive vertical market, CBTL was challenged with deploying a cost effective

managed Wi-Fi solution that was not going to break the budget. Keys to success of this offering were a quick implementation period, a secure low-cost offering, and minimal interaction from the IT and marketing staff at CBTL. It was imperative that the vendor had a proven track record for success with other retailers/QSR companies and could enable a service which was easy to use for the CBTL patrons.

The IRG SolutionThe IRG|Wi-Fi product from IRG was chosen by CBTL due to the product’s ability to meet the defined

requirements and IRG’s vast experience in the Wi-Fi marketplace.VP of Supply Chain, Paul Balzer, selected IRG to provide Wi-Fi because of the assurance they could

deliver what they promised to their customers. “Paid Wi-Fi is a significant cost to the customer,” says Balzer. “We wanted to reward our frequent customers and actively influence new traffic with free Internet service. Since offering reliable and totally free hotspots, our store teams have noticed an increase in store traffic as well as higher sales per order. Providing this service only enhances our company’s commitment to creating a warm and inviting customer experience.”

25

C A S E S T U D YBalzer and IRG agreed on a two- to three-month

rollout schedule. IRG coordinated the schedule, and an IRG technician went to each of the locations rolling out Wi-Fi to conduct the installation. “Store managers had to know when the technician was arriving for a number of reasons,” says Balzer. “A manager had to be on-site in case the technician needed access to back rooms or had questions. The IRG technician installed the wireless router, started service, and tested it.”

Activating all of the locations very quickly was imperative as CBTL had already promised its customers that this service would be provided. IRG got the job done in less than 60 days, courtesy of the hardworking and dedicated Project Management staffs at both organizations.

IRG Delivered• Provisioning, coordination, and installation of a

new broadband network to provide a distinct, secure environment for guest Wi-Fi service.

• Turn-key implementation of the new broadband network and Wi-Fi service, including careful onsite technician logistics to minimize disruption of store operations.

More than 100 years of dedication have transformed the name Swarovski into the synonym for crystal. Back in 1895, Daniel Swarovski pursued his dream of creating a crystal so perfect that it captured both the eye and the heart. Swarovski, now the undisputed world leader in cut crystal has remained fully independent since its foundation in Wattens, Austria. The company employs over 25,000 people and maintains a presence in more than 120 countries worldwide.Today, the name of Swarovski stands for exacting workmanship, quality and creativity all over the world.

CIO ChallengesWith the recent shift in the economy, companies

have been forced to change the way they operate in today’s retail environment. Swarovski’s IT department was given a directive from Corporate to accomplish more with less, without compromising the experience synonymous with the Swarovski name. Swarovski also needed a company who could not only effectively manage the rollout, but to proactively manage all aspects of the network once it was up and operational. Having a managed service provider for their network that was available 24/7, 365 days a year to service any and all of their network related needs was imperative to the success of this opportunity.

THE IRG SOLUTIONIRG project managers

researched its network of carriers for low cost DSL and broadband. In the interest of utilizing existing hardware for greater cost savings, IRG was able to work with the existing Cisco platform already in place in Swarovski retail locations.

Swarovski was able to increase the bandwidth to stores while reducing

overall costs by as much as 50% after replacing the expensive T-1 network with high speed broadband. By incorporating a 3G backup, Swarovski was able to insure they weren’t sacrificing reliability for these much needed cost savings.

Swarovski requested a slow rollout of the IRG solution; therefore IRG limited implementation to only 15 stores per month. This allowed Swarovski IT staff to thoroughly test and approve the reliability of each store as well as set up and test their applications. Broadband powered applications are central to Swarovski’s business. The entire POS system

and related back office applications function only with broadband. Similarly, delivering real-time data in the supply chain application ensured both stores and customers receive accurate information on product availability. With the extra bandwidth, Swarovski has also introduced VoIP

as another way to leverage the broadband network,

eliminating the need for additional phone lines.

included 3G failover as part of the broadband solution. This ensured every store would have the “always on” connectivity IRG delivers, enabling faster credit card processing and accessing corporate communications, corporate data, and using broadband applications.

Throughout the project, IRG maintained proactive communication with the retailer with status updates on the progress. This eliminated interruption of business at the store level. Moreover, Swarovski’s need of having the single NOC responsible for all aspects of the network infrastructure as it related to their retail stores was accomplished through IRG’s two U.S. based Network Operation Centers.

When the entire project is complete, IRG will have implemented its solution in over 250 Swarovski retail stores and seasonal kiosks throughout the U.S. and Canada.

been using a very cost-prohibitive MPLS T-1 network. While the infrastructure was stable, it was low-speed and didn’t bring the flexibilities a new IPsec (Internet Protocol Security) network would provide. The company was seeking a managed service provider that would create a fully-managed, high-speed, low-cost broadband over a layer 3 network infrastructure. It was important to Nationwide that the provider be hardware-agnostic in its approach, and was capable of implementing and managing the underlying VPN firewall device. Further, the company was interested in discovering how a new managed service provider could help them leverage the potential of the new IPsec network to include options such as VoIP.

of sale processing, nightly polling, pricing updates, gift card sale and transactions, and scheduling. IRG’s management of the project eliminated, in many cases, the need for procurement of new services in order to increase bandwidth/technology. Acting on behalf of Ethan Allen, IRG was able to obtain the necessary LOA switch of services where the existing broadband requirements were already being met for Ethan Allen. The extensive

This not only helped to move the project along more quickly, but also reduced CAPEX costs as it related to installation of new services.

Ethan Allen selected IRG because of its proactive commitment to top-tier managed services to its customers in the retail vertical market, rather than the reactive service common among many manage service providers today.

By streamlining their broadband technologies, IRG reduced Ethan Allen’s costs concerning secondary and failover services. IRG enabled Ethan Allen to replace the reactive management platform and led the network refresh, including CPE staging, logistics, and fast/turn up. Partnered with Fortinet, IRG facilitated inventory management and oversees deploying all customer premise equipment as well as wireless failover nationwide.

IRG’s dedicated project managers worked closely with Ethan Allen’s support team to ensure the process caused no interruption to daily store operations. IRG’s service included total device management via SNMP with configuration backup/next day hardware replacement maintenance on remote locations, as well as engineering assistance to reconfigure the corporate office to support the newly installed firewalls.
