Today you are going to:• Learn about poetry techniques
• Discuss emotions
• Expand vocabulary
• Use language to persuade the reader to feel a certain way
• Plan, draft and write a poem for Poetry Emotions competition
What are emotions?• Emotions are a feeling• You can show emotions by the
way you act, your facial expressions and body language as well as by what you say or do
• Can you give your teacher an example of an emotion?
• Have you felt this emotion?• What did it make you do / feel like?
What is alliteration?• Alliteration is the repetition of the
same sound or letter at the beginning of each or most of the words in a sentence
• E.g The wild winds whisk to the west
What is a simile?• A simile is a figure of speech that
compares two things by using the words‘like’ or ‘as’ something else
E.g. I was as angry as a bull at a red flag
Or
I was scared, I went as white as a ghost
What is a metaphor?• A metaphor is there to make an even stronger
image in the reader’s head by describing a place, subject or object as something unlikely
E.g. Anger was a speeding bullet
Or
I was in a sea of trouble!
What is personification?
• Personification is when you make an object or idea do something only a human can do
E.g. I was scared when the alarm clock screamed at me this morning!
What is imagery?• Imagery describes what you are writing
about vividly, so the reader can imagine it
E.g. I was so scared, my heart was beating loudly like a drum, my hands were sweaty and I could feel a scream of joy bubbling up my throat.
What is rhyme?• A rhyme is when two words sound the
same when spoken
E.g. Bright and night
Rhyming words don’t have to be spelt the same to be classed as a rhyme
E.g. Would and hood
What Emotion Am I?
A Riddle
My hands feel all wet,Sweat trickling like a dripping tap,
But my mouth is as dry as a desert,I feel a bit jumpy
And there is a lump in my throat,A bit like I’m going to cry ...
What emotion am I?
A: Nervous
AngerRhyme
Anger lives in the deepest places
Where the monsters and nightmares hideBut sometimes he bursts out without warning
Sometimes he can’t stay inside.
Being left out of games or being called namesOr eating up all his greens
These are the things that make Anger appearAnd he’ll shout and he’ll kick and he’ll scream.
His face is all red and his skin is all spiky
He’s the fiercest emotion aroundNobody likes him, they all run away
And only return when he’s back underground.
The only way to stop him is to take a deep breathTo gently blow him away
Sunshine and cuddles and soothing wordsWill make Anger disappear for days.

My birthday, what a brilliant thing,We’re going to have chocolate cake and everything.
Party games are so fun,Musical chairs is my number one.
Family and friends come to make my birthday a special day, Jelly and ice cream is my favourite thing,Everyone likes it, especially Uncle Tim!
Party bags, what everyone likes,We get bubbles and spinners, which are so much fun!I say bye to everyone and thank them for their gifts,

Now you need an emotionto write about...
• Your teacher may give you an emotion• You may be asked to pick an emotion• You may be asked to use the idea generator to
choose an emotion• If you need any ideas, the next slide will help you!
• Write about a celebration• Write about a time you’ve felt proud• Has the worry monster ever visited you? How did you
cope?• Try writing about a difficult emotion, such as boredom or
pride• Put yourself in someone else’s shoes, what are they
feeling?• Write about your best day ever!• Have your emotions ever got you into trouble?
What happened and what did you learn?• Write about how you are feeling now• Describe lots of different emotions as if they were people
Now you will write apoem as a class:
• Choose a theme together• What style would you like to write your
class poem in?• What poetic techniques will you try to
include?
Once you have written your class poem your teacher will
read it out to you:• How can you improve it?• Has the poem persuaded you to feel
the emotion?• What other emotions has it made you feel?
If you have any questions please ask your teacher now as you will be writing your own emotion poem next!
Now it istime to write
your own poem!• Fill in the planning sheet your teacher has given you• Draw a picture based on for your emotion• Turn the sheet over and write your poem• Remember to write your name and age in the space
provided• Don’t fill in any other details on the entry form,
unless your teacher tells you to!
• Now you need to work with a partner• Read your poem to them• Your partner is to provide feedback;
something they like about your poem and a suggestion on how it could be improved
• You then listen to your partner’s poem and give them feedback
