Configure the Cloud Backup app to connect to a Cloud Backup Server

Before using the Cloud Backup app, you must configure some settings to point your mobile device to a Cloud Backup server (called a DS-System).

1. Download the Cloud Backup app from AppStore or re-install it from your iTunes.2. If you have already registered for a DS-Client with a Service Provider, you may have

received a CRI (Customer Registration Information) file by E-Mail.

3. Tap the CRI attachment file. A popup appears.

User Guide

5. The “Settings” screen appears.

• The fields will be filled with the information from the CRI file. (If you are upgrading to a newer version of the Cloud Backup app, you will have the option to import the settings from the previous version.)

6. You must configure the DS-System where the Cloud Backup app will send your mobile device’s backup data. This information (with the exception of the Private Key) is supplied by your Service Provider in the CRI file (or you can type the information in manually to an empty screen).

Field Descriptions

DS-System IPThe IP address for the Cloud connection.• Multiple IP addresses: If your service provider gives you multiple IP

addresses, separate each address with a semi-colon (;).

DS-System Port By default, this is 4401. It should not be changed.

Account NumberThe Account number assigned to you by your Cloud Backup Service Provider.

Account Key

• AES Encryption is used with the Account Key. The level (AES128 or AES256) depends on the other types of DS-Clients in your customer account.

• This key is 16-characters (AES128) or 32-characters (AES256) long and has the same auto-complete as the Private Key.

Verify Account Key Verify the key by re-typing the Account Key.

DS-Client NumberThe unique client number that is assigned to this Cloud Backup app installation.

NOTE: If your Service Provider enables “Encryption Key Forwarding”, the Account and Private Encryption Keys are forwarded (in encrypted format) to the DS-System. This means your Service Provider will be able to create a valid .CRI file containing the encrypted keys, which will be able to recreate a working version of this DS-Client.

6. Tap “Save”. A “User Info” popup screen appears.

• You must supply the requested information about your organization.

Private Key

Your encryption key to be used for data that comes uniquely from your mobile device.• AES Encryption is used with the Private Key. The level (AES128 or

AES256) is the same as your Account Key. • This key is 16-characters (AES128) or 32-characters (AES256) long.• If you enter a shorter string, an ‘auto-complete’ feature repeats

the string you entered from the start until 16 (or 32) characters are filled.

For example:• “123” will become “12312312312312312312312312312312”;• “abc12” will become “abc12abc12abc12abc12abc12abc12ab”

Verify Private Key Verify the key by re-typing the Private Key.

Working with your Backup SetActivities on Cloud Backup app center around the backup set. A default backup set is created at installation time. All the activities you perform on the Cloud Backup app will be related to this backup set:

• “Edit the Backup Set” on page 12 • “Backup (Scheduled & On-Demand)” on page 14 • “Restore” on page 17 • “Delete” on page 21

Edit the Backup SetThe default backup set is created at installation time on your Apple iOS device. You can change the items selected for backup, depending on your requirements.

1. Tap the “Edit Selection” button.

2. The “Edit Selection” screen appears.

• Contacts: By default, this item is selected for backup. Each generation of the Contacts that is backed up is time stamped.

• Calendar: By default, this item is selected for backup. Each generation of the Calendar that is backed up is time stamped.Note: A new generation (different version) of the Contacts or Calendar is only backed up if

changes have occurred since the previous backup.• Photos: Photos include images and videos from the device’s Photo Albums.

Each photo and video on your device is considered a unique object that is backed up individually (there is normally only one generation of any photo or video). By default, backup of images is on and backup of videos is off. To specify what to backup, tap “Photos”. (See also: “Troubleshooting: Photo or Video backup fails due to Location Services setting” on page 26.)

- In the “Edit Photos” screen, slide the setting ON / OFF for each backup item.

Note: Photos and Videos are given a unique ID when backed up. Cloud Backup keeps this ID in its database to skip backup of that same item on subsequent backups.

• Reminders (iOS 6): By default, this item is selected for backup. Each generation of the Reminders that is backed up is time stamped.

• Retention Rule: By default, this is ON and set to 3 generations. Each time you back up your data (files) with changes since the previous backup, it creates a new generation. After this many generations of either item has been backed up, the latest generation will overwrite the oldest. For example, on the 4th backup of your Contacts, the 1st backup will be deleted.

- To edit the retention rule, tap “Keep Last Generations”.

- In the “Retention Settings” screen, slide the setting ON / OFF. Set the number of generations to retain using the number spinner.

3. Tap “Done” in the “Edit Selection” screen to save the changes to your backup set.

- Photo Restore Options: Tap “Options” to open the ”Restore Options” screen. These apply only to photo and video restores

Scan Option• For more details, see: “In-Depth: Photo Restores” on page 27.

No Scan

The restore process will not perform any restore duplication checking.• If you select a photo or video for restore that already exists on the iOS

device, a duplicate will be restored. (The restored photo or video will have a different filename, but this is not visible on the iOS device and you will effectively see two identical files.)

Fast Scan

The restore process will scan the thumbnail of each selected photo or video and compare it with the list in the Cloud Backup database.• This option provides checking to minimize duplication.• This option should take significantly less time than a full scan, but with

less accuracy (more chances of duplicate restore items).

Full Scan(Default)

The restore process will scan each selected photo or video and compare it with the list in the Cloud Backup database.• This option provides the best checking to minimize duplication.• This option will take the longest time.

Show Photo Stream• This option only applies to devices running iOS 5 or higher. • The Photo Stream is part of a service available in iOS to automatically upload and share

photos from all your iOS devices.• There may be more items in the Photo Stream (synchronized from other iOS devices)

than in your Camera Roll.• The Photo Stream is always backed up if the service has been configured on this iOS

device.

Off (Default)If this option is turned off (default), you will not see any backed up photos from the Photo Stream in the “Select Photos” for restore screen.

On

If this option is turned on, the “Select Photos” for restore screen will have an additional section: • Photos\Photo Stream

Note that you can only restore backed up items to your iOS device’s Camera Roll (and not to any of the other Photos\sub-folders).

Troubleshooting: Re-registering Cloud BackupNormally, a 1:1 relationship is enforced between a mobile device and the DS-Client account configured on the Cloud Backup Server (DS-System). This is achieved by registering the mobile device’s hardware with the DS-System automatically on first connection, then on subsequent connections DS-System verifies that the connection is coming from the same hardware.

If you ever need to change your mobile device (e.g. you buy a new phone), but want to keep using the same CloudBackup account (with all the backed up Contacts, pictures, etc.), you will encounter a “Hardware information does not match” error when first connecting to the DS-System with the new phone. The error occurs after you tap “Save” in the “Settings” page.

To remove the previous hardware registration information and replace it with the current hardware, call your Service Provider:

1. Ask them to uncheck the “Requires Registration” option from your DS-Client account on the DS-System.

2. Once this is done, you can tap “Save” in the same “Settings” page of the Cloud Backup app and wait for the following popup:

“Login successful. Your DS-Client # [...] and private key [...] have been stored in your device. Please keep them...”

• This message means your current phone’s installation of the Cloud Backup app is the one registered with the DS-System.

3. After successful re-registration, ask your Service Provider to re-apply the “Requires Registration” option to your DS-Client account, which will only allow connections from your current phone.

Troubleshooting: Photo or Video backup fails due to Location Services setting

On the first backup of a photo or video using the CloudBackup app, the following popup will appear requesting that you grant the app permission to access your Camera Roll.

• If you tap “OK”, future backups will proceed without further popups.• If you tap “Don’t Allow”, you will encounter errors for any photo or video

backup. This is because the CloudBackup app setting in the iOS device’s “Location Services” screen has been turned off.

To allow backup of photos and videos from your Camera Roll, go to your iOS device’s Home and tap “Settings”. The, tap “Location Services” and make sure that “CloudBackup” is set to “ON”.

In-Depth: Photo Restores Creation Date: August 08, 2012Revision Date: August 08, 2012Product: DS-Client (iOS)

Summary

Note: The content of this article was correct as of the ‘Revision Date’. It is possible that the iOSmay change behavior at any time.

The following sections describe the specific behavior when restoring backed up photos with the different restore options.

Restoring photos that were taken by the iOS device:1. When original photos are backed up, their ‘thumbnail’ is included to help with sorting.

If changes are performed to that original photo from the device itself (red-eye correction, crop, etc.), the changes are backed up as a different generation of the original photo.• This is the main instance where generations of a photo can occur. Instead of

altering the photo (raw image), iOS saves the ‘properties’ changes that you made and updates the ‘thumbnail’.

2. Restore a photo with the (default) “Full Scan” option:Full Scan minimizes the chance of duplicate restores by comparing the signature of the file requested for restore with the one in the iOS client database. • If the photo still exists on the Camera Roll, the restore process will skip the

photo, no matter which generation you selected for restore.• If the photo has been removed from the Camera Roll, then the restore

process will restore the specific generation you selected for restore. You can only restore a different generation if you delete the original from the Camera Roll. Once you restore a photo, all subsequent restore attempts for that photo (even if you select different generation), will be skipped by the restore process.TIP: After deleted photos are successfully restored, it is recommended that you immediately run

a backup. This updates the DS-System with the information that those photos are once again on the iOS device and should be skipped if another restore is requested.

3. Restore a photo with the “Fast Scan” option:Fast Scan lowers the chance of duplicate restores by comparing the thumbnail signature of the file requested for restore with the one in the iOS client database. Since it is based on only the thumbnail, it is much faster than a Full Scan but it can result in duplicate restores if the photos in question are very similar.• If the photo still exists on the Camera Roll, and you selected the latest

generation (by default) of the photo for restore, the restore process will skip the photo. However, if you select a previous generation for restore, the Cloud Backup App will restore another version of this photo to your Camera Roll, which means you will have two similar (i.e. duplicate) photos in your Camera Roll.

• If the photo has been removed from the Camera Roll, then the restore process will restore the generation you selected for restore. If you subsequently select another (different) generation of this photo for restore, then the Cloud Backup App will restore the photo again (another duplicate generation).TIP: After deleted photos are successfully restored, it is recommended that you immediately run

a backup. This updates the DS-System with the information that those photos are once again on the iOS device and should be skipped if another restore is requested.

For the screen shot pictures from the iOS device (which are stored as PNG files in your Camera Roll):

• The restore behavior is similar to each of the above descriptions for photos.• The main difference is the restore process will always restore the original

PNG file to your Camera Roll (no matter which generation you select to restore).

Restore with “No Scan” option:• If the “No Scan” option is selected, the Cloud Backup App will always restore

the selected photos and videos. This means you will have duplicated photos and videos in your Camera Roll.

In-Depth: Network Type Detection (WiFi, 3G, ...)Creation Date: September 12, 2012Revision Date: September 12, 2012Product: DS-Client (iOS)

SummaryBy default, the iOS DS-Client attempts to use a WiFi connection when it needs to connect to the network (for backup, restore, etc.). This is primarily a cost feature, since many WiFi connections are free.

If the iOS DS-Client activity cannot use a WiFi connection, Cloud Backup will inform you with a popup warning that it will try to use your device’s cellular data plan (e.g. 3G, LTE) for the network connection. You can tap “Continue” to proceed using your cellular data plan’s connection (note this will use up some of your cellular data plan’s allowed upload/download limit).

If you do not want to see this warning, you can turn it off by going to your iOS device’s Home and tapping “Settings”. Tap “Cloud Backup” and toggle the “WiFi only” setting to “OFF”.

• ON: (Default) Popup warning appears whenever iOS DS-Client attempts to connect to the network using your cellular data plan.

• OFF: No warning appears when iOS DS-Client switches the type of network connection.
