It’s hot! It will get hotter. Your times will be slow and youwon’t feel that great all the time. Just remember to gut it out, butbe smart. Pay attention to your body, pay attention to your friendswhile you are running. Remember to hydrate. If you fell nauseous or your friends com-plain of nausea then stop! We live in a tough part of the country so don’t feel bad if youfeel you have to stop.

The following is a link to the signs of heat stress and stroke from Oklahoma Uni-versity. Take the time to read them and know what to do if you or, since you will be ababbling idiot on the verge of coma, your running partner exhibits the sign of heatstress or stroke. It can kill and we don’t want that!

http://www.pp.okstate.edu/ehs/training/heat.htmThe only way to get used to the heat is to run in it, but do your best to be safe.

Trust you when I say you will be missed if something happens to you. I hope every-one is having a great summer. Get out and run and just think about how well you willdo and how good it will feel when the temperature starts to drop!

See you on the Road!

Twenty-six bones make a foot.Fourteen little bones in your five

toes; five metatarsals; three cuneiformsand a cuboid; the navicular, the talus, and the big old calcaneus (heel bone). One bone for each mile of a marathon.

Too many runners treat the foot likea hoof. It is not a single entity, to beshoe-horned into a Reebok. I’m here toimplore you to treat your feet like youlove them. If you will be good to yourfeet, they are much more likely to begood to you!

Grab your right foot with bothhands, shoe off. Sock on or sock off, doesn’t matter. Fold your leg, tailor-fashion, so your foot is in your lap andget busy. You are going to make yourfoot happy.

With your thumbs, start working intothe fat pads at the ball of your foot.Push and knead, twist and pull. Thereare five metatarsals that press againstthat pad every time your foot pushes offthe ground. Explore that quintet ofbones and get to know them better.

Now work out to the tip of each toe, feeling each of those 14 little bones.Fold them back and forth, twist each one, tweak them and pull them. Don’t they tellyou they are glad to be touched?

Those other seven bones, thelarger ones, suffer lives of neglect. Butnot on your foot! Go after them, too.Twist your foot and appreciate yourarch. Wiggle your ankle and realizethat ligaments connect each bone to itsneighbors. Stretch and probe, and ro-tate your ankle with both hands, firstone direction and then the other. Goahead, roll it through the whole rangeof motion.

You have just completed caressingyour foot. In the meantime, you havealso stretched dozens of the tendonsthat connect muscles to those 26bones, from the thick Achilles tendon tothe tiniest toe flexor and extensor.Every muscle that moves your foot inrunning has its origin in the knee areaor lower leg. By tugging on the foot, youhave given each of those muscles asubtle stretch. The foot-rub techniqueis far more effective than toe touches orleaning against a tree.

Lie back and allow your foot to reston the ground, your knees bent. Raiseyour right foot (the one you just mas-saged), and tilt your leg to one side,

then the other. You should observe thatyour calf muscles are flaccid and sag, totally relaxed. Palpate (touch) your calfand make it jelly-like. It is not normal forit to be permanently taut.

While lying there, jiggle your ham-string muscles. They, too, have proba-bly benefited from the work you havedone on your foot and will be supple.

Halfway done.Repeat the routine on your left foot.

Seek areas that are especially stiff ortender and give them an extra minute.

Now you have two happy feet, twoloose ankles, two relaxed calves andshins, and thigh muscles more at easethan you have had for quite some time.

This routine, repeated daily, willgreatly increase the likelihood of supe-rior foot health, and reduce your needfor time-consuming stretching programs.

Each morning, for 40+ years, I havestarted each day with a quick foot ruband the practice has served me well.Give it a try. Your feet will love you.

Sponsors: Davewould like to put theStepUp Florida Logo with a link to the websiteon our Strider website main page. Kellieso moved, Keith seconded, all approved.

2008-2009 Race Dates: Dave pre-sented a calendar of Strider Race datesfor the coming year, to include the HogJog for this year. He noted that the RiverRoad Resolution (RRR) 5K was movedto the third weekend in January (the17th) so as not to conflict with the DisneyMarathon. The Run to the Sun (RTTS) istraditionally the second weekend inApril, but we’re moving it to the 18th to ac-commodate the Sheriff’s Departmentand not conflict with the Clay CountyFair. Mike Ford asked if our first threeraces of the year are part of the GrandPrix, and Dave told him they are. TheMemorial Day 5K will be May 25th. TheHog Jog has been recommended to beheld November 8th by Steve Bruce, theRace Director. Mary Ann asked if therewere other Fun Runs to add to theschedule. Dave said the RRR and RTTSare the big races which give money tothe schools for the Children’s Fun Runs.Mike Ford went over the October, No-vember, and December Fun Runs for thekids that have some prizes, but nomoney for the schools. Dave agreed toadd these Fun Runs to the website cal-endar. Glenn moved that we approve

the dates as recommended, Janis sec-onded, and all approved unanimously.

Socials: 30th Anniversary Picnic –Glenn stated that the Xterra Trail Run,

which was attached to the Social for nextmonth, has been cancelled. Instead, wewill do a day at the beach, going on someruns in advance and then having a picnicon the 26th of July. ForAugust, wewill beat Camp Blanding in conjunction with theHammerheadOlympic Triathlon (HOT) onSunday, the 24th. Glenn mentioned thatwemust have anRSVP in advance to getpeople access to the post. He and Daveare collecting names to turn in.

Next Glenn talked about theFounder’s Day Banquet. The commit-tee looked at several venues, and deter-mined that the Hill Top offered us the bestdeal. He gave us the available dates inSeptember to choose from and it wasproposed to accept the 19th as the pri-mary, 13th second, and the 12th as thethird choice. Kellie said we will chargeeveryone $20 per person. The roomholds 150 people, and they will serve abuffet which includes prime rib, salmonand fettuccine. This is dependent on 100people attending. The committee hasestimated at least 75 paying guests and25 guests of honor to receive compli-mentary meals. If 75 people pay, and wespend money for guests as well as invi-tations, the committee estimates it willcost $3200, half of which is already cov-ered in the social budget. The original so-cial budget was $1690 for the year, andwe’ve only used about $100 of it so far.

The cost of the room is $800. The mini-mum required is 50 people, maximum150. Regina Taylor asked what the pro-gram would include. Dave stated therewould be some awards and a presenta-tion, but that has not been determinedyet. There will also be a cash bar. MikeMayse checked the by-laws to ensure wecould vote for a non-budgeted item, anddetermined that we could. Vicky movedthat we approve the budget and the datesas set forth, and Kellie seconded. Therewas some initial dissention until the mo-tion was clarified to be an additional non-budget item which would not affect thecurrent social budget. There was a countof votes and all approved.

General Discussion:Mike Ford mentioned that he hasn’t

decided whether to do an additional Chil-dren’s Fun Run in October. He also saidhe’s getting inquiries about whether he’sgoing to do Cross Country at the JuniorHigh Level.

Mary Ann said that Charles E. Ben-nett Elementary gave the Application fora Run/Walk Club grant to Dave.

Keith Poythress presented a proposalto collect old athletic shoes for recycling, saying he would like the support of theStriders. We would table the discussionfor the next agenda.

There was a motion for adjournmentand the meeting was adjourned at 8:20.

Respectfully submitted,Vicky Connell

Hello and “big ups” to all of youtoughing it out and running races inJuly. Not many races to report, butnonetheless several Striders got out todo what races there were. Some of youmust be getting up there in races, andmaybe just for fun you’ll want to re-search the number of races you havedone and track those you do heretofore(more on that later). As for right now, here are your results.

The 4th of July gave us not only bar-beques and fireworks, but also the Cele-bration 5K in Jacksonville. Striders werecelebrating in a big way at the race, bothindividually and as groups. Our fastest in-dividual was Justin Jacobs, who ran a15:42 for a 3rd place overall finish. Forgroups, we had Strider men and womensweeping age groups. For the ladies,

Ann Krause, Stephanie GriffithandGayle Pylipow combined tosweep women’s 50-54 agegroup. Ann was also our fastestfemale Strider as well, posting a22:04. For the men, Paul Smith,Ben Holland and Ken Bendyswept the 65-69 age group. Other Striderage group champions were BruceHolmes, Maura Sova, Bo Holub and, inhis 900th race, Joe Connolly. Pacing to2nd place age group finishes wereGeorge White, Alek Abate, Kwan Mc-Call, Marie Bendy and Al Saffer. Andalso finding reason to celebrate with 3rdplace age group finishes were NancyPullo, Lewis Buzzell, Tracy Pfuntnerand Stephen Beard. Two other notableperformances were turned in by twowalkers, Denise Dailey and Shannen

Crampton. Denise walked, Irepeat, walked a 25:50, andShannen completed the 5K justfour days before giving birth. And there were Striders in thefun run too, with Dot Mitchellrunning alongside her grand-

childrenBreanna andMorgan to the fin-ish. Great effort everyone and a bigpatriotic salute to all of you.

The only other local race to report isthe “New” Bridge of Lions 5K, held inSt. Augustine on July 19, 2008. Seven-teen Striders reported to the race, andwere led by Ann Krause, who won herage group with a 22:44. Pat Gallagherwon his age group as well, while GailPylipow recorded a 2nd place age groupfinish and Bo Holub a 3rd place agegroup finish.

Joe Connolly doesn’t think he’ll bearound for number 1,000, but the wilyrunning veteran of Jacksonville took a bitof the fanfare of July 4 with his 900th run-ning race in his 83 years of existence.Connolly ran the 30th annual Celebration5km road race Friday and was feted forhis running perserverance.

“I have had prostate cancer andeven had a heart attack during the RiverRun 15km race a couple of years ago,but I’m still here,” Connolly quippedthrough a slightly embarrassed smile asthe Jacksonville running community high-lighted his day. “I’ve never really won any-thing big with running except my agegroup. Not too many 80 year olds kickingaround with running shoes on, you know.”

Connolly, an accountant for the CSXCorporation, started his running epic in1971 and has kept the dream alive

through two wives, lots of rain, a beer canthrown at him, a Bible-touting spitter andthe inspiration of two people in particular;world-reknown runner and book writingphilosopher Dr. George Sheehan, of NewJersey, and fellow age group combatantNorman Fernee.

“Dr. George was a great runner forhis age, but he was very inspirational withthe books he wrote about the whole run-ning aura,” said Connolly. “Norman, Godrest his soul, died a couple of years agofrom prostate cancer, but he and I racedside by side plenty of times then sharedoff-the-run good times. I could never quitecatch him.”

Connolly’s early athletic career cen-tered around Boston College ice hockeywhere he played center then he devel-oped a passion for tennis and found outrunning could help his game.

“Running actually helped my tennis, then I started to like the runs more thantennis,” he said.

Connolly’s northeastern roots, mainlythe Cape Cod area, gave him his most

memorable runs as he ran in three of theinfamous Falmouth Road Races.

“It’s just so pretty up there and a littlecooler,” he said.

Connolly receiveda couple of plaques,a clock and even a 900th race cake whilelistening up to see if hewould snare yet an-other age group win which he did.

The Jacksonville Track Club, theFlorida Striders, and Doug Alred of 1stPlace Sports, who is race director tomany Jacksonville run races, all gavekudos to Connolly on July 4.

“He has always been around and al-ways smiling,” said Alred, who remem-bered the heart attack year. “We thoughtthat would be the end of his running, buthe’s still running.”

As Connolly stacked up his hardwareto head home, he advised a younger ath-lete of one thing. “Keep moving, it keepsyou young.”

Striders – They’re everywhere!!For the first time in Back Page his-

tory, and perhaps even StriderRight his-tory, we have more out of town races toreport than local races. Way to get outthere folks and report your travels backto me. And cool places too.

Starting off all the way up in Fair-banks, Alaska, Winney Yaun ran in theMosquito Meander 5K on June 14th.Al-most 800 folks finished the race, whichbeckons the question: Who knew therewere that many people in Alaska thatcould do a 5K without dogs pulling themalong in a sled?My inane thoughts aside,Winney was up to task, representing notonly us Striders by all of Florida in im-pressive fashion by placing 3rd in herage group.

George Hoskins has made it backfrom Hawaii, but got in one more racewhile there, doing the Schofield Bar-racks July 4th 5K. George showed thoseHawaiians what Striders are made of,place first in his age group with a 25:21.Way to go George, and welcome home.

Rounding out our travels wereMarieand Ken Bendy. The two raced in theFolkmoot 5K in Waynesville, North Car-olina on July 19th. Marie led their effort, placing 2nd in her age group.

Tidbits and stuff I missed.Don’t think I missed anything, and if

I did, then somebody has missed that Imissed it. For the tidbit, Congratulationsto Robert and Shannen Crampton on thearrival of their son, Christopher, on July8th. Christopher weighed in at a lean 6

lbs., 13.7 oz. and was 22 ½ inches long.Definitely a runner’s build, and the littleguy has already has been to severalraces (pre-birth) with mom carrying himto the finish. My guess is that he has rac-ing in him, and we’ll be seeing Christo-pher at the fun runs in no time.

AwardIt was an easy decision for me again

this month, with Joe Connelly being ouraward winner. As you read earlier, Joedid his 900th race this past month. Thatis a lot of racing folks. Just to put it in per-spective, if someone started racing rightnow and did one race every week with-out fail until reaching 900, he or shewould do their 900th race in the year2025. Even if someone took 50 years todo 900 races, that’s 18 races a year, which is still a lot. Further, Joe has donemany of his races while in his “advancedyears” (he’s 83 now). Very impressiveJoe and simply inspiring, so much in-spiring that folks have shown interest de-veloping some type of recognition forStriders at every 100 races completed(start tracking your races folks). If we dothis Joe, we’ll owe you nine of whateverit is used for the recognition. Great joband congratulations on making it to theline 900 times. And with the award, ofcourse, you are entitled to….a nicesmug feeling.

That’s all for this month. Rememberto record your results on the Strider Manclipboard at the local races. Until nexttime, train well and be safe.
