Turf News On The Course with Scott Hillyard

This is the time of year superintendents begin to reflect on the past season and assess. While this has been a relatively cool year, it has still provided challenges. We started off wet, had a dry spell in the month of July, and got wet again in August and September. Keeping up with mowing, and keeping bunkers pushed up was challenging at times, but all in all we had a very good summer golf season. I see no reason at this point that fall golf won’t be just as good.

On a different note, moving forward in October, this is a time for projects and building plant health. Fertilizers are applied in the fall months to recover from summer stress and build health heading into winter, and aerification practices are implemented to aid in gas exchange, improve water infiltration and nutrient uptake, improve rooting, and help firm up surfaces. We are once again using the Vertiquake in the fairways for aerification. This machine helps to shatter soil which, over time will help with all the

above listed benefits. On the tees and approaches we will verticut to remove some of the organic matter build up as well as topdress with sand to help dilute the same organic matter. This is not an overnight process to firm up these areas, but requires a commitment to a sustained program over the long term. Mowing of the native/fescue areas began in late August, as well as herbicide applications for the control of broadleaf weeds. If we have time to fit it in, we will also undertake some smaller drainage projects in the chronically wet areas.I ask that you have patience when encountering some of these activities. The work we complete between now and Thanksgiving are what set the stage for next golf season. Enjoy this time of year and play some golf.

Thank you for a great golf season and we are looking forward to an exciting fall as well.
