the writing process

How do you feel about the overall process of writing a paper so far?

Are you feeling overwhelmed or does breaking the paper down into smaller, more specific tasks help relieve some of the stress?

Did you find the "Practice Library Search" and "Library Tips and Tools" documents helpful?

Please remember—if you have questions or run into problems, I am only an email away!

In this course, we break the process of writing down into a number of smaller tasks that will culminate in the final persuasive research paper.

plagiarism

Plagiarism is stealing another person's work.

PLAGIARISM (using someone else's words, ideas or theories and not giving credit where credit is due with a citation) is a very serious issue!

A research paper depends on outside sources to support an argument, and all sources must be cited—otherwise, the writer will be accused of plagiarism.

APA style of documentation:refresher

AVOID PLAGIARISM—CITE ALL YOUR SOURCES!

For many of your courses at Kaplan (including CM220) you will be using the APA style of documentation.

APA dictates a standard layout (manuscript formatting) for academic papers and a universal method for referencing (citing) sources.

APA refresherAn in-text or 'parenthetical citation' (usually the author's name and the publication date) appears in your text directly following the information you used.

A full citation (author, title, place and date of publication, etc.) appears in a references page at the end of the paper.

Finding help with APA citations:

Review the “APA Quick Reference” under Course Home

Obtain an APA Manual—if you already had Effective Writing I (now College Composition I) you may already have a copy of The KU Handbook for Writers by Noah Tysick and Kara Van Dam.

APA refresherTo cite an electronic article from a database in Kaplan’s library:

Last name, first initial (year). Article Title. Periodical/Journal Title. Vol (issue). Retrieval month, day, and year and source. Here is an example:

Smith, J. (2001). House boats and house coats. House Boater

Magazine, 23(3). Retrieved April 22, 2005 from

Academic Search Premier database.

If you have the original page numbers, they go right after the volume and issue number—for example:

Smith, J. (2001). House boats and house coats. House Boater

Magazine, 23(3): 17-23. Retrieved April 22, 2005 from

Academic Search Premier database.

Note: Do not provide a link to the database since it will take the reader to the log-in screen, not the actual article. Also, note that APA does not use URLs or links for in-text citations.

topics and thesis statements

Your thesis statement should be one or two

sentences that clearly state your position

(what you intend to argue). It should be found at the end of

your paper's first paragraph.

Your topic should be controversial, researchable, reasonably narrow and interesting to you and your audience.

revisiting audienceRemember, your audience should be specific—clearly defined. A “general” audience will not be appropriate for your project in this course.

Different topics and different arguments can appeal to vastly different audiences!

For legal issues, writing to your state legislator is a great way to focus the audience. If you are working with an employment issue, the logical audience is your employer. For school issues, think about the school officials/school board as your audience.

revisiting audience

Let’s say that you are persuading your audience that diet pills should not be sold over the counter. How would you approach a target audience of the FDA, the agency who makes the decision?

How would you approach a target audience of pharmacists in your community?

questions to ask about audience

Who has the ability to make the change or implement the solution I am arguing for? What would they already know about

the topic? What is their stance on the topic likely to be? What tone will be most effective for this audience? How much background material will they need?
