Bengalurus tribe of greenactivists have launched aSave BannerghattaNational Park after thestate government movedto nibble away at its eco-sensitive zone (ESZ).
As always, develop-ment is the ruse cited byKarnataka chief ministerB S Yediyurappa in hisletter to Union environ-ment minister PrakashJavadekar asking toreduce the ESZ of thepark by no less than 100sq km. And as ever, theBJP government hasproved to be no moreenvironment-fr iendlythan any of its predeces-sors, although the rulingpartys MPs, P C Mohanand Tejasvi Surya, hadexpressed ardent support
to saving what is a cruciallung space of Bengaluru.
The previous dispensa-tion of the Congress andnow the BJP havebetrayed the citizens, said Vijay Nishanth, founder of ProjectVruksha.
E n v i r o n m e n t a l i s t shave always wanted theoriginal 268 km ESZ ofBannerghatta maintained.However, which govern-ment has ever not given into development in pref-erence to environmentalniceties? The nationalparks inevitable fate wasonly stoppered by theKarnataka High Court,which on January 21restrained commercialand developmental activi-ties within a 10 km radiusof the national park.

At a recent mediaconference inVisakhapatnam, a closeassociate of Mr JaganMohan Reddy, Mr V.Vijayasai Reddy, MP,asserted that the stategovernment will formnew districts soon.Incidentally, theTelangana state govern-ment has already formednew districts, increasingthe number from 10 to34.
