We need an actual invoice with de- tails from the company before we consider making any con- tribution toward this debt. We continued our discussion regarding the Accents/Acentos becoming just anonymous. We were reminded that in Au- gust 2011, there was a motion to publish the Accents/ Acentos in only anonymous versions. The vote was 10 in favor; 9 opposed. We needed a two-thirds majority. Since we did not get a two-thirds majority, the motion did not pass. The other discussion item was the possibility of having a YPAA Chair at the Area level. CHAIR’S REPORT Vikki L

[email protected]

I want to start out my report by expressing my gratitude to

the trusted servants who make themselves available to serve

in General Service. I know it is not always fun or easy to sit in a hot room all day on a Saturday in the middle of Summer.

For me, I do it because I love Alcoholics Anonymous and I feel I need to give back what was so freely given to me. Also

I do it because I have made a commitment to be there and

to do the best I can. But more than that, I am there because I have a responsibility to the people that I serve who trust

me to carry the message of Alcoholics Anonymous.

We had our last Area Committee meeting on Saturday, July 21st in West Sacramento. After the morning reports, we

moved onto the discussion items. The first item was the pos-

sibility of the Area paying an old debt acquired by a “dark” district. Telephone calls were made to the company regard-

ing the bill, and we have not received a return call. We have not received an invoice. We need an actual invoice with de-

tails from the company before we consider making any con-

tribution toward this debt. After a full discussion and plenty of participation, we decided to wait until we receive the in-

voice and the contract from the business. This conversation will continue in August.

We continued our discussion regarding the Accents/Acentos becoming just anonymous. We were reminded that in Au-

gust 2011, there was a motion to publish the Accents/Acentos in only anonymous versions. The vote was 10 in

favor; 9 opposed. We needed a two-thirds majority. Since we did not get a two-thirds majority, the motion did not

pass. The other discussion item was the possibility of having

a YPAA Chair at the Area level. There was a request for the job duties/responsibilities to be formed so we could better

assess the situation. Both this discussion and the Accents discussion will continue next month.

I also want to take an opportunity to thank you for sending

me to NCCAA in Auburn last month. I had an amazing time! It was an honor to represent CNIA at the business meetings.

It was really cool to hear the Delegate’s report from Coastal. I want to say thank you to Nancy M. and Roger M. for their

participation. Lela did a wonderful presentation about Unity

in General Service. Woody R. presented the history of CNIA and NCCAA. There was a ton on service and recovery

crammed into one weekend. I hope if you get the chance, please do not miss the next NCCAA Conference. It is going

to be in Sacramento on October 5th, 6th and 7th at the Wood-lake Inn. Also please let me know if you plan on going. As

always, I am looking for volunteers to serve as readers, mod-

erators, etc.

Thank you for letting me be of service.

LITERATURE CHAIR REPORT Celia B

[email protected]

It’s an exciting time to be literature chair. It’s probably always exciting, but this is my opportunity and I’m grateful

to have it. Thank you for this chance to learn more about our literature and share it with you guys.

First, I’d like to talk about translations, how we carry the

message to people we will never see and can never talk to. Our literature has been translated into 87 languages such

as Hmong, Korean, and Nepali. As of June 30, 2012, there are 1,152 publications, including pamphlets, in other lan-

guages. Many languages “for now, only have a list of the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions in that language with

translations of books, pamphlets, etc. a tenuous dream for

the future (from “AA Translation Worldwide” as presented to the General Service Board in July 2012)”.

Alcoholics Anonymous alone has been translated into 67 languages. AAWS is currently translating the book into

Navajo. Thirteen other translations are being worked on

around the world with AAWS’s permission and the help of the international literature fund (a fund maintained by the

many General Service Offices around the world in order to publish literature where no service structure exists). The

Big Book will soon be available in K'iche' (Mayan), Bambara (Mali), and Haitian Creole, among several others.

As you know, new literature on spirituality (including sto-

ries from atheists and agnostics) is still in process. We re-ceived 200 stories before the submission deadline passed.

These were weighted toward traditional spiritual experienc-es and the Conference Literature Committee recommended

to the Trustees Committee that we ask for more stories to

better reflect the beautiful diversity of our fellowship. This was just a recommendation and the final decision is up to

the Trustees Committee. But we should pay attention be-cause we may have another opportunity to share our expe-

rience. Regarding new publications: The updated version of AA

and the Armed Services was just released , with several

new stories that reflect more recent military experience. Also, the Trustees Literature Committee is in the process of

deciding on one final piece of the update of Living Sober. Once they reach their decision, the book will be ready to

go. Both Living Sober and the new As Bill Sees It, which

includes the 12 Concepts for World Service, will be printed as stock runs out in about two months. All three of these

publications, as well as the new AA Service Manual and the Membership Survey pamphlet, should be available at our

Mini-PRAASA in October. Please come by the literature

table to check them out. Finally, I’d like to share with you something cool that I

learned from a DCM at our last Area Committee Meeting. The Library of Congress currently has a show in the Smith-

sonian of the 88 “Books that Shaped America”, crucial books that define who we are as a country. Alcoholics

Anonymous is one of those 88 books. On display is a fac-

simile of the first edition as it was published in 1939. It is humbling that our book is included among The Federalist

Papers, Benjamin Franklin’s Poor Richard’s Almanac, The

Cat in the Hat, and other great works. It’s a wonderful

testament to the impact our literature and our program of recovery have had on millions of alcoholics in the country

and around the world.

lot of tips. Our BTG had 2nd meeting

on July 20. Our Unity Day planning committee has agreed on having PI/

CPC, BTG, Archives, Literature, H&I and GSR information tables set up.

Our next meeting is July 22.

D-40 – Pete C, DCM We had our

District meeting in Mariposa on July 1st. We discussed our District Unity

Day at Bass Lake for September 9 @

noon. Details will be discussed in the North Fork meeting. We decided to do

the Traditions Play and have a couple roles left for the play. Speaker TBD;

flyers have been distributed in the Dis-trict, more info upcoming.

D-41 – Dave D, Alt DCM D-41 meeting was held on July 9 with 3

GSRs, DCM, Alt DCM, Treasurer and FCYPAA liaison present. Area 07 Dele-

gate, Lela M, presented her report

from the General Service Conference, sponsored by the 3 Fresno districts.

Approx. 35 people attended. A special thanks to Lela and all those who

helped make this an informative and memorable event. District 41 has fi-

nally obtained an Post Office Box –

District 41 Area 07, P.O. Box 5481 Fresno, CA 93755. District finances

are OK and prudent reserve has been met.

D-47 – Sherry B, DCM We didn’t

meet in July. Excited about Pre-Conference Assembly in 2013 and the

panel is working together. Registra-tion and flyers will be available, hope-

fully on our website. Last month I

brought a situation to the Area regard-ing the outstanding balance on an an-

swering service. I have attempted to reach the woman who contacted GSO

to obtain a copy of the invoice and contract and it has been unsuccessful.

No further information is available at

this time.

D-53 – Miguel E, DCM We meet every Friday. The 3rd Friday is our Dis-

trict meeting, 4th Friday is discussion

on GSC agenda items for 2013; other Fridays are study. Last Friday we dis-

cussed about bill owed for D-49. Ma-jority of the groups were in agreement

to pay the amount due. GSRs passed the basket for 7th Tradition and we

received $48 to pay for the bill. The

committee for the District’s 20th Anni-versary was discussed. Coordinator

Narciso, Secretary Jose, Tesorero Vic-tor, Alt DCM Joel O, and DCM Miguel E

are here today from D-53. We thank

Lela and Lee for participating in this event!

D-54 – Pedro C, DCM We have our

meetings 1st and 3rd Thursday at 7-9

pm every month. They have 10-12 RSGs in attendance. Thank the com-

mittee on June 30 for sharing with all of you. We are working on our 11th

Foro that will take place in Fresno on Dec 1st. We are also working to have

a La Vina Workshop the 12th of August

with Connie, Grapevine Chair (La Vina Coordinadora), in West Sacramento.

We share and support groups for their Anniversary and also working towards

celebrating 78 years of AA in June

2013.

D-55 – Luis L, DCM The District has meetings on Wednesday. We are also

supporting the 11th Foro for December 1st. Our next meeting will be 18th of

July and discuss a new secretary, new

coordinator of LaVina and coordinator for this District. I feel more committed

to these new members and commit-tees. We have a new coordinator for

public information. We are continuing

Page 6: CNIA AREA ACCENTSCNIA AREA ACCENTS A confidential newsletter, published by the officers of the California Northern Interior Area (CNIA), a General Service Area of

CNIA AREA ACCENTS Vol. 38 No. 8 Page 6 AUGUST 2012

to visit new groups in the area. We

have a study meeting of the General Service Manual and other items. For

these meetings we bring people from other Districts to share with us and for

me, as DCM, I feel fortunate to serve

my District and do it with pride.

D-56 – Martin C, DCM This District has 2 meetings per month; 2 for study

and 2 for new discussion. One is to study the General Service Manual. One

is business working on information for

Area and local District. We report on a new group that opened up and a com-

mittee invited unity with all other groups, especially with events and an-

niversaries. We had a committee for

11th Foro come and visit us from Riverbank. We are working to assist

with this event in Fresno, D-53. We are also working with a committee for

LaVina for everyone to increase sub-scriptions.

OFFICERS’ REPORTS

Registrar – [email protected]

Brent G I received few address

changes. There is information in your folders. We receive a return guaran-

tee addressed card from post office to make changes when not accepted by

mail. It’s a way to make updated changes with groups receiving mail

from the Area.

Secretary – [email protected]

Jan P Thank you so much for your emailed and written reports – it helps

a great deal to verify information you

say at the mic OR, if you might be ab-sent, your report can be read and will

appear in the Accents/Acentos.

Treasurer – [email protected] – Ann R This month processed dona-

tions, paid bills, updated banking rec-

ords to reflect the new officers includ-ing your treasurer. Melody T. of the

Finance Committee and I reviewed the current process for accounting to see

where we may be able to streamline

our processes, where we might make some changes in our reporting to you,

so the financial aspect of our service speaks to you and is easily under-

stood. We have some ideas, but will

take a bit of time to put them into

place. We look forward to perhaps graphical representation of our finan-

cial status in the months to come. We are bringing our tax records current

with notifications to Franchise Tax

Board and the Internal Revenue Ser-vice as required for non-profit status.

I thank our Officers for our monthly Officers meeting. Please mail your

Area Expense Reports to Treasurer, Ann R, CNIA 07, P.O. Box 161712,

Sacramento, CA 95816-1712, or give

to me at the Area meeting.

Alternate Chair – [email protected] – Michael K

My apologies for not submitting a writ-

ten report for the June ACM. Nancy H, General Service Trustee for Grapevine

Board, will speak after dinner at Mini-PRAASA! Be sure to register for the

dinner early because the deadline is a week earlier! I’m planning on chang-

ing the usual format of Mini-PRAASA to

be more like PRAASA and to help GSRs learn. I attended GSR Schools in Dis-

tricts 11, 17, 19, 24 and 30; contact me if you want to have a GSR school.

I am looking for volunteers: DCMs to

serve on the Committee for Area In-ventory and the Committee for the

GSO Inventory. GSRs to serve on pan-els at the Area Assemblies. DCMs to

obtain a list of available GSRs and ei-

ther email me with your list or give to me at the August ACM. We need pan-

elists for NCCAA in Sacramento! Please let me know if you’re interest-

ed.

Chair – [email protected] – Vikki L

I attended the following: June 17 Sharing/Caring; June 23 was Unity Day

in D-19; June 24 was GSR School with Mike K in Redding; June 30 was Sacra-

mento Unity Day and spoke about

General Service; July 6-8 was NCCAA in Auburn and represented CNIA at the

business meeting. I heard the coastal Delegate; Lela presented unity in Gen-

eral Service; Woody R presented histo-ry of CNIA and NCCAA. The next

NCCAA is at Wood Lake Inn, Sacra-

mento on October 4-6. On July 14th, I shared at Oak Park Fellowship in Sac-

ramento. We held our monthly Offic-ers meeting via conference call on July

17th and discussed Area & GSO Inven-

tory, Forum in September, Proposed

Budget. Our next meeting is August

15. Lee W and I are invited to Per-shing Fellowship in Stockton to facili-

tate a group inventory. And August 26 is the NCCAA steering committee

meeting in Stockton.

Alternate Delegate –

[email protected] – Kelley M Wednesday, July 11, I gave a PI/CPC

presentation to D-32 at Fremont Fel-lowship in Stockton. Bridging the Gap

(BTG) Chair Matthew L also presented

at the meeting. I attended the Sacra-mento Area CCF PI/CPC Meeting, held

the second Monday of every month. The Committee is working on a variety

of projects including wider distribution

of Public Service announcements and opportunities for outreach to the pro-

fessional community. I attended my first NCC Conference in Auburn and

listened to the CNCA Delegate give his Conference Report. I participated in

the CNIA Officers Conference call. I

am available to serve as a Resource Coordinator for any Districts who are

seeking help for their PI/CPC Commit-tees. The new membership survey is

available online and pamphlet is availa-

ble through aa.org.

ing visits are: Grass Valley, Yuba, Placerville, Manteca. Invitation from

NCCOM (Northern California Central Office Managers) to speak – they are

asking about AA online store, eBooks, experience at the conference, and oth-

er items.

Nominating It was my honor to for-ward an updated resume for the Hon-

orable Richard A. Vlavianos’ for consid-eration as a Class A Trustee. GSO

acknowledged the resumé and let me

know that he is in the active file for

consideration. People in CNIA have

submitted resumés for AAWS and GV Non-Trustee Director positions – it will

be exciting to hear if people are called for interviews. I understand that Rod

is Chair of AAWS Nominating Commit-

tee and has received many resumés, with the window still open.

Finance Terry Bedient letter – inputs

were due July 15th about ways to be self supporting without literature. We

had two memos from Past Delegates.

A few highlights to consider -- One suggested a personal plan and a group

plan, and one suggested ways to cut expenses.

Reminder: Birthday envelopes are a

great way to contribute. (Dick B is acquiring some for the Area.) Other possibilities: Have or set up own per-sonal “Plan”. Our CNIA Inventory has

been done but we may do again. GSC Inventory – the ad hoc committee de-

cided how to weave in financial input

from members. Perhaps consider less $ for dinners @ conferences and as-

semblies. Maybe request annual con-tribution from groups.

ings on the Journey – digital subscrip-tion at www.aa.org

Treatment and Special Needs

Committee The conference commit-

tee recommended some changes that won’t appear until next printing of the

kit. Still have some in stock. Highlights include: change wording in the section

on basic suggestions (you may hear basic suggestions for sobriety); remov-

al of fact sheet – it is redundant.

Reminder: BTG Workshop in Min-

neapolis in September Some questions to consider for

GSC and our Area: How does GSC

deal with diversity (Latinos/African

American/less meeting attendance – what are we doing about it? Work-

shop topics are great, but what are we really doing about it? Conference fo-

cus was vision – now looking at 5

years out – what is the typical out-reach we can do – we have inefficien-

cies and how to become more effi-cient. General Service Office – per-

haps a number to call automatic sys-tem and tell what you want as has

been done with the Birthday enve-

lopes. A group in San Diego doesn’t agree with GSC and begun the process

for the subtitle for the AA pamphlet for military. Diversity or lack of it – some-

thing in our inventories that we ad-

dress here: youth Hispanic and Young People in our community – hope with

upcoming inventories will be more spe-cific. Please highlight problems BUT

add solutions too! USINESS

Discussion Topics

D-47 Request for D-49 Answering Ser-vice Non-Payment December 2011-April 2012 (continued discussion from June ACM) Telephone calls were made to woman with company regarding bill and they

have not returned any of the calls, therefore no further information can

be given. We have not received an

invoice. We need an actual invoice with details from the company before

any funds are paid. D-53 contributed $48 and D-47 is putting in a ‘holding’

account. Unfortunately, this District has gone dark in the past (many little

towns over a very large area) and

there is a concern about members in the District not receiving Area or GSO

information; there is a possibility to combine D-47 and D-49.

Appointed YPAA Chair Possibility by Regina K (continued discussion from June ACM) ACM requested job duties/responsibilities to be formed and no

one here today; however, we want to know responsibilities of a YPAA

Chair // We are surprised there wasn’t any YP attending as representative at

this ACM // Our Area has been trying

to have YPAA liaison’s give a report // We want to be as inclusive as possi-

ble // YPAA is primarily for socializing

and concerned about knowing the Tra-ditions // Do Appointed Chairs vote?

No // YPAA has a liaison to NCCAA – perhaps liaison to CNIA instead // Fi-

nancial implications if Appointed Chair

vs a liaison // Idaho Area has the only YPAA Appointed Chair // ICYPAA was

founded for the purpose of providing a setting for an annual celebration of

sobriety among young people in AA // more discussion at the August ACM.

Consider Publishing Accents/Acentos All Anonymous We were reminded that in August 2011

there was a motion to publish the Ac-cents/Acentos in only anonymous ver-

sions. 10 in favor; 9 opposed. We need 2/3rd vote to change.

Discussion to be continued at the Au-gust ACM

Motion to close and seconded to ad-journ @ 3:20 p.m.

Respectively submitted Blessings & Humbled Thankfulness,
