Foreword

C O N N E C TAn Initiative of SME CHAMBER OF INDIA
Dear Fellow SMEs,
March and April 2016 were a time of significant activity for the Indian SME sector. From SME IPOs
raising money from the equities markets to announcements of forthcoming Chinese investments in
Indian SMEs to financial institutions pushing to increase their SME loan books, there was significant
news that was heartening.
Rationalized raw material prices are likely to fillip the ecosystem for some more time, however the
continued weakness of the Rupee against the Dollar is likely to cause import discomforts to continue.
There are very many SME manufacturers – especially in sectors that buy from PSUs – who are forced
to buy in cash, with ever lengthening collection cycles, often from the same PSUs. This adds to the
crunched liquidity situation that is creating even greater SME discomfort.
To my mind the Indian SME ecosystem is in the crucible of change. On one hand our unceasing efforts
to bring positive change both on regulatory and business fronts are beginning to yield fruit. On the
other there is still much that we have to do as the true drivers of India’s growth story over the next 2-3
decades.
While the roll out of innovative and potentially game changing initiatives like TREDS can do much to
ease our liquidity situation, we need to understand the level of preparation that is needed from us as
SMEs to make use of these. I am not certain that we have been paying enough attention to being
prepared to take advantage of opportunities that will come in the near future. At a recent
conversation with TReDS platform facilitators, many doubts were raised that highlights this
situation. Transparency of transaction, good and accountable fiduciary management, quality of
record keeping and robust risk management were issues that were prominently cited as gaps in our
work ethic.
Government and regulators cannot seriously impact the systemic cash crunch unless we give them the means to do so. This can only be done by
adopting global best practices that make it impossible for financiers to deny us credit on the above grounds. This for me is the single biggest issue that
we must address on top priority. To become globally operative and competitive, we have to aim to be best practice compliant.
The other area where I feel we need focus is that of creating an equal, inclusive and diverse ecosystem that nurtures talent and creates opportunity.
SME paradigms everywhere in the world have grown explosively only when they have focused on creating community wealth and raising community
standards of living. Henry Ford caught onto this very early when he pushed for better wages, saying if we do not create the capability to buy more in our
community, we’ll never have the capability to sell more.
In April 2016, I read a report that demonstrated that women led MSMEs were outperforming the markets consistently. Simply because women
entrepreneurs have been seen to be more disciplined in their approach to business, more value focused and more competitive by nature, they have
created success. I believe we have some of the smartest women on the planet in this country; it’s time we leveraged their capabilities to grow.
In the coming months we will maintain focus on skill pool creation for SMEs, creation of a more easily accessible digital business framework,
transparency, the working capital logjam and diversity in SME business. Please do reach out to us with not only your problems and issues but also your
ideas and suggestions, so that everyone may benefit from your thought process and learnings.
My sincerest gratitude to our members, well-wishers, contributors, guest speakers, event sponsors and of course, our gracious advertisers.
